In Kansas City, Kansas news spreads that Cole Younger has been found guilty and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in a Denver prison. Friends of Younger work to free him starting with kidnapping the brakeman on the Kansas City to Denver Express train. Deputy U.S. Marshals Cheyenne Bodie and John C. Warren are accompanying Younger in the baggage car. While eating his dinner in the dining car, Cheyenne finds a gun in his face. Reacting quickly with his own gun he discovers a ten year old boy holding it who runs away leaving the toy gun with Cheyenne. Cheyenne visits the baggage car to offer Johnny a chance to go eat but Johnny prefers to avoid the fancy environment of the ding car. Cheyenne then tracks down the boy finding her with his grandmother Mrs. Frazier and beautiful widowed mother Laura Barrington. He returns the toy and tries to calm the scared boy. Laura is impressed with Cheyenne's character and strength. Their mutual interest leads to more time together interrupted by the escape attempts by Younger.
