Bernie Baruch and Jack Benny
bkoganbing6 March 2016
Checkmate's client in this story is the committee running the fictitious Pioneer Bowl Committee standing in for the real live Rose Bowl. It seems as though one of the two grand marshals in the parade is being threatened. Soon some real substantive incidents occur.

Jack Benny playing a Jack Benny like comedian named Jack Bowen is one of the marshals. He's getting some threats and there are some attempts at killing him. During the parade there's a shot fired and it hits the other grand marshal Otto Kruger.

The best part of this episode are the scenes with Benny and Kruger. Jack is looking for investment advice and Kruger just wants to bask in Jack's celebrity glow and maybe get a few personal ad libs.

Today's audience wouldn't get it, but Kruger's character is based on the legendary Central Park bench millionaire and philosopher Bernard Baruch who people were always trying to get investment tips from. He would usually try to put them off in the manner you see Kruger doing.

Seeing Jack Benny is never something to pass up.
