A step forward for Marcia
jdollak14 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
While the third season has edged a little more toward the silly end of the spectrum, the writers have started to get a handle on a few of the characters.

This episode plays out in a pretty standard way, with Marcia expressing insecurity about her abilities, which leads to the other kids conspiring to compliment her into thinking she's a skilled actress. Of course, this works too effectively, and Marcia turns into a bit of a diva. Where the episode reaches some new territory is after Mike and Carol tell her how badly she's behaving, and that the understudy will be stepping in for her role. Marcia has a bit of a breakdown, crying and such.

Usually, when the Brady kids are upset, they either pout a little, or they get politely confused. ("Two boys asked me out. What should I do?") This is a little uncomfortable. It's sort of nice.

Also notable - I believe that Greg wears a purple outfit in this episode. Light purple shirt, darker purple pants. Did kids really dress like that?

Juliet and Romeo
safenoe13 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Marcia (Maureen McCormick) gets caught up with Romeo and Juliet, and it all gets rather Kardashianesque and all with the sisterly dispute between Marcia and Jan over Marcia's involvement in this Shakespeare classic. Anyway, I'm enjoying reflecting on The Brady Bunch, having first watched it in the 1970s when it was on after school repeats, and I've been a fan ever since. Anyway, it's amazing that this episode debuted over 50 years ago, and yet it lives on. If this episode was rebooted, I'd suggest the Shakespeare play be Titus Andronicus as that would really get the juices flowing and all init.

Harold Axlerod as Romeo?

Marcia as Juliet and Harold as Romeo. Interesting, that this pretty girl initially thought she wasn't the type to play Juliet. Even more interesting is that nobody questioned Harold (a genuinely stupid looking goof) as Romeo. If this was intended to be taken seriously, then it was one of the worst cases of miscasting in history. Randy Case (Harold) would have been much better suited to play Harvey Klinger, in a previous episode. In any case, Marcia becomes conceited after everyone encourages her to believe in herself. I loved the scene where all three Brady girls argue over closet space. Jan says to Marcia: "What's so special about your dresses?!" You tell her, Jan! Maureen McCormick gave one of her best performances in this episode. I liked her better when she was conceited and stuck up. The episode is generally well done, but Harold as Romeo was a big mistake.
