Maurice Evans' Puzzler replacing Frank Gorshin's Riddler
kevinolzak11 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Due to Frank Gorshin's salary demands his character of The Riddler was held back nearly the entire second season, until the first was rewritten for Maurice Evans and now called The Puzzler (Fred De Gorter's only other script was for Gorshin's first return appearance, "A Riddle a Day Keeps the Riddler Away"/"When the Rat's Away the Mice Will Play"). "The Puzzles Are Coming"/"The Duo is Slumming" was originally scripted as "A Penny for Your Riddles"/"They're Worth a Lot More," aviation the theme and Evans adding the Shakespearean touches to make the part his own (sounding very much like Dr. Zaius from "Planet of the Apes"). There are several riddles throughout to remind one of Gorshin's high pitched absence, clearly missed this second season, the guest cast as dull as the final result. The cliffhanger finds the Caped Crusaders rising in a hot air balloon, the basket set to drop its cargo at 20,000 feet.
