Concrete Umbrella Solid

Warning: Spoilers
Burgess Meredith's Penguin often gives the dynamic duo some of their most difficult times. This episode and the next are no exception. The devious bird gets one up on Batman in a role of pretending he is now a public hero stopping crime.

This approach manages to catch Batman flat footed, and then comes the Penguins getting an arrest warrant issued on Batman. The commissioner goes more than a little crazy trying to do his duty and arrest Batman.

In this one, Penguin sets a trap in which he nearly gets Comissioner Gordon and Chief Ohara to shoot Batman and Robin down in cold blood. It is a clever, though simple set up. The question is can they escape the bullets of the law?

Ingenious plot taken from Penguin's very first comic book appearance

Warning: Spoilers
"The Penguin Goes Straight" was Burgess Meredith's second go round as the waddling master of fowl play, in some ways improving on the first. One thing that Penguin had over Joker or Riddler was his self proclaimed 'delight in the devious,' to appear to have gone straight while simultaneously making Batman out to be a crook. This was touched upon lightly in Meredith's debut in "Fine Feathered Finks"/"The Penguin's a Jinx," but here at the start we see the cagey bird foiling an attempted robbery by using a bullet proof umbrella, saving the jeweled necklace of wealthy heiress Sophia Starr (Kathleen Crowley). The audience, and the Dynamic Duo, know it's only a clever ruse to advertise his newly opened Penguin Protective Agency, as Batman so aptly puts it: "hiring him to guard jewels is like trusting a leaf of lettuce to a rabbit!" Constantly seen among the upper class with Sophia Starr on his arm, the Caped Crusaders guess that his caper involves stealing her priceless collection of jewels, only to be foiled when their interrupted replacement of the real jewels with fakes earns a warrant for attempted theft. Sneaking back into Gotham City for Penguin's next rendezvous at an amusement park, Batman and Robin are knocked out by a cement umbrella and trussed up behind a shooting gallery, with Commissioner Gordon and Chief O'Hara all set to become their unwitting executioners!

YOU GUYS MUST BE READIN' COMIC BOOKS!

So says a mug who is in cahoots with the PENGUIN (a little inside joke!) getting the third degree by Commissioner Gordon and Chief O'Hara. This episode has a campy opening with the Penguin (Burgess Meredith) going on a wild crime spree. His master plan is to establish a protection agency for wealthy people. LOOK OUT for the concrete umbrella?? Lots of fun and games as Batman and Robin trade one-liners and dodge the usual Zzzaps and Kpowws mastered by the Penguin and his goons. You can also tell that Meredith was really enjoying this role, putting his talent into every waddle while chomping on his cigarette holder. The producers actually made time for Burgess Meredith, re-arranging the shooting schedule so he could pursue other movie and tv projects. He was the man, and was given tremendous respect. It was a smart move and paid off.

Special guest star is Kathleen Crowley as Sophia Starr, the Penguin's gal pal. Crowley was a regular at Warner Brothers tv, appearing many times in such hit shows as 77 SUNSET STRIP in a variety of offbeat roles. She also was a semi-regular on MAVERICK, opposite James Garner, who said she was one of the best actresses in the biz. Crowley entered and came in 7th place in the MISS AMERICA PAGEANT when she was a teen, then working as a bookkeeper.

Old pro Leslie H. Martinson directed, who also worked at Warners with Crowley, known for such hits as MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, MANNIX and the BRADY BUNCH. He achieved cult status by directing BATMAN. No question.

Complete with Batman and Robin's classic walk up the side of a building, and a KNOCK OUT of an ending. Wait and see what the qwacking Penguin has planned for the Dynamic Duo???? Hint: It may have been borrowed from an old SHERLOCK HOLMES movie starring Basil Rathbone. Recommended from SEASON ONE. Episode 21 (1966) restored color dvd box set.
