Fishing from a shady bank
kevinolzak22 May 2016
"The Joker's Last Laugh" was another superb entry for Cesar Romero, no surprise given that it was the final contribution from original pilot author Lorenzo Semple Jr. Once again The Joker has a beautiful moll, Josie Miller (Phyllis Douglas), riding around (for the only time in the entire series) in his very own Jokemobile, his headquarters the former comic book factory Penthouse Publishers (before they went nude I'm sure), said to be 'formerly innocent purveyors of mirth!' Using the same comic book printing paper, Joker has been making counterfeit currency, which has mysteriously been handed out from the Gotham National Bank (the Caped Crusader suggests a bit of fishing to Robin, 'from a shady bank'). Batman chats with the manager, Mr. F. Flamm (J. Edward McKinley), who mentions that his chief clerk installed a replacement before going out to lunch, a certain Mr. Glee (Lawrence Montaigne) the one distributing all the phony money. A super funny joke gets no response from the emotionless teller, forcing Batman to reveal that Mr. Glee is only a robot, stuffing the carcass into his trunk for an examination back at the Batcave. This gives the alert Joker an opportunity to follow the Batmobile out of town, for the purpose of locating the fabled Batcave, only to be foiled by a misdirected signal that only leads him to a miniature replica. Promising to have the last laugh, Joker gets an unexpected call from a desperate Bruce Wayne, claiming to be wiped out due to an excess of speculation that cost him a cool million. In return for a sample of Joker's counterfeit money, Wayne carries a signed document that will make 'Mr. W.C. Whiteface' the new vice chairman of the board of the Gotham National Bank. Ecstatic at this turn of events, an ebullient 'Whiteface' complies, only for Robin to appear at the window, but the Boy Wonder is no match for a pair of robots named Boff (Clint Ritchie) and Yock (Ed Deemer). Now attached to a conveyor belt, Robin is set to be printed into a comic book, and the one pulling the lever is none other than Bruce Wayne! Lovely Phyllis Davis and Lawrence Montaigne were both better known for their STAR TREK roles, but add a certain flair to this two parter, Phyllis one of the most animated molls in the entire series.

LAUGHIN' ALL THE WAY TO JAIL.

I agree, a WAY classic Joker episode for Cesar Romero. This time he's distributing counterfeit money all over Gotham City and having a blast! Real goofy story finds the Joker's gang manning the presses and printing out funny money as fast as they can.

Interesting gag scene finds fabulously wealthy Bruce Wayne getting in contact with the Joker --for business reasons? Adam West is fun to watch here.

Best wacky plan; the Joker plants life like robots in the bank to carry out business. Lawrence Montaigne, the perfect deadpan, plays robot Mr. Glee. Montaigne also appeared on STAR TREK at the time. For classic car buffs, catch the Joker's Jokemobile, a cool revamped 1927 Ford Model T, designed by the George Barris, who also designed the Batmobile and the MUNSTER'S classy hearse-mobile. If you look closely, it has some similar features taken from the Munster's car.

The Jokemobile was in EASY COME, EASY GO, starring Elvis. Good trivia question.

Pretty Phyllis Douglas plays the Joker's gal pal, Josie. Her claim to fame was playing a baby in GONE WITH THE WIND. She later became a realtor. Popular character actor J. Edward McKinley plays bank president F. Flamm (excellent character name), who held a record of appearing 10 times on BEWITCHED.

Directed by veteran Oscar Rudolph (THE BRADY BUNCH and other classics).

10 Joker Stars.

SEASON 3 EPISODE 47 remastered color dvd box set. Part 1 and 2 /4 dvds per box, Released 2015.
