The Mad Hatter blows his lid
kevinolzak14 May 2016
"The Contaminated Cowl" marked the one time only return of David Wayne's Mad Hatter, a role he apparently despised, but never displays in another all out energetic performance. Set to cap his criminal career by snatching Batman's cowl, the latest impersonation by Jervis Tetsch is that of the three tailed Pasha of Panchagorum, snatching a ruby from the headdress of Hattie Hatfield (Barbara Morrison), and spraying a radioactive substance in Batman's face, turning his cowl bright pink. It's off to the Atomic Research lab of Professor Overbeck (Leonid Kinskey) for decontamination, only to be followed by The Mad Hatter and his goons, therein trapping the Dynamic Duo in a fluoroscopic cabinet to be reduced to skeletons in seconds under high voltage x-rays! Hat check girl Polly is a substantial role played by pretty Jean Hale, former wife of Dabney Coleman.

PASHA OF PANCHAGORUM!

Charles Hoffman, one of the most creative writers in tv land, put this classic together, and starring dynamic character actor David Wayne as the infamous MAD HATTER, a role he would appear in three additional episodes. He's fantastic, and slightly resembled Burgess Meredith at times.

The Hatter has his greedy eyes on Batman's famous cowl, disguising himself and attending Gotham City's headdress ball. While he's there, he steals Hattie Hatfield's prize ruby. Popular character actress Barbara Morrison plays Hattie, always in fun roles as dignified ladies. There's a little sci fi in this episode, involving radioactivity; Batman is sprayed by the Hatter and his famous cowl turns pink? This requires Batman to head to an atomic research lab to save himself --the Hatter follows -- and let the games begin.

Look for beautiful Jean Hale at the Hatter's bad girl friend. Jean had just appeared in the OSCAR (1966) and received excellent reviews. Unfortunately, she lost out to Faye Dunaway for the role of Bonnie Parker in BONNIE AND CLYDE (1967). Super trivia question.

Outrageous stuff, as ususal, again thanks to Charles Hoffman, long with Warner Brothers/ABC tv, producer for HAWAIIN EYE and also writer for JOHNNY QUEST.

David Wayne makes a classic villain to be sure. And the secret word is Pasha.

SEASON 2 EPISODE 35 remastered color. 1967.
