Yours Untruly

As a kid I missed both the movie and Season Three so I thought only Julie Newmar had ever played The Catwoman. So when saw this episode on Yorkshire TV in 1976 I had two big surprises in store for me.

When The Catwoman gatecrashes the opening banquet my immediate reaction was puzzlement that none of the guests said "It's Eartha Kitt!! What are you doing dressed as Catwoman??" (The CIA later described Kitt as "a sadistic nymphomaniac" - presumably after seeing an episode of 'Batman' and thinking it was a documentary). Then Commissioner Gordon turned out to now have a daughter who moonlit as someone called Batgirl!

But I wasn't complaining, especially as The Catwoman promptly has Batgirl tied up. And this episode furnishes Batman with the most memorable compliment he ever paid the Princess of Plunder: "She may be evil. But she is... attractive".

My only quibble is that Catwoman didn't need to change into a ballgown to already qualify as the best-dressed woman in Gotham...

Cat paws and Kitt fever!
blanbrn7 November 2019
This "Batman" episode from season 3 "Catwoman's Dressed to Kill" is interesting with action and drama as the silk slinky lady Catwoman(Eartha Kitt) hams it up as a female criminal who overtakes and crashes the party at a female fashion show for Gotham city ladies! As "Batgirl" faces a close call and escape cut after being tied up and gagged and nearly sliced in half! Overall good well done episode with a tease and sexy turn from Miss Kitt as the new "Catwoman"

EARTHA KITT DEBUTS IN THE BATSERIES
asalerno1026 June 2022
Catwoman does not tolerate that Batgirld is awarded as one of the best dressed women above her, so she shows up whenever fashion shows are held in Gotham City and steals all the clothes presented by famous designers to add to her wardrobe. He kidnaps Batgirl and tries to eliminate her by putting her at the mercy of an electric fence as she prepares to steal her exclusive ball gown from a visiting queen in Gotham City. Here we have the debut of Eartha Kitt in the role of Catwoman, Julie Newmar herself said in a report that she was willing to continue in her role but never knew why the production did not contract her for season 3. It is not known very well if the replacement was to incorporate a black villain since at that time it was customary for all series to have an African-American member for a matter of massively promoting integration or if perhaps Julie was too tall (she was 1.80 meters) next to her by Ivonne Craig and visually they were not going to be on par. The script is quite good and the chapter has a very hilarious scene with Batman and Robin entering the dressing room of the models with their eyes covered and tripping. Eartha is good at playing Catwoman but she's not up to Julie's standards.

Knockout Adventure
StuOz21 July 2018
Catwoman is now played by Eartha Kitt!

In my 1970s childhood this episode was owned on audio tape and I must have listened to that recording atleast 100 times! A knockout adventure loaded with comedy and drama, the dialogue really sparkles and the jazzy Billy May music used over the Bruce and Dick costume change at the start is so thrilling!

Granted, we get more of those season three cheap sets, but you will be so busy looking at sexy Eartha Kitt that you will hardly notice! After the previous clunky three-parter set in "Londinium"...Catwoman's Dressed To Kill is just so welcome!

HISTORICAL AND HYSTERICAL EPISODE
tcchelsey2 April 2023
The story goes that Julie Newmar had signed a film contract with another studio and there would be conflicts, although she appeared in several other tv shows at the time. This was a big loss to devout fans, either way, as they had fallen in love with her way campy style. Enter legendary singer Eartha Kitt. Kitt gained a lot of attention at the time as she was nominated for an Emmy Award for her appearance on I SPY. She won the role, now playing the first black villainess, and with a throaty purr at that. Kitt made the most of playing Catwoman, and is quite diabolical, if not more dead serious, Her crush on Batman is also over. Now begins a more "catty" rivalry between she and Batgirl (Yvonne Craig). Surprise! Catwoman becomes extremely jealous of the female caped crusader, being heralded as the "best dressed" woman of Gotham City. She subsequently crashes a local fashion show, steals the priceless gowns and kidnaps her rival --who may not have long to live. Special guest star is none other than acclaimed designer Rudy Gernreich, credited for inventing the "thong" and the first topless swimsuit! And there's more. Look for the great Anne Baxter as Olga, Queen of Cossacks. Nasty Olga owed her rise to power to Egghead, who discovered her washing dishes in a restaurant? This according to Batman history. Baxter would appear in seven episodes, and yet another female baddie to keep the caped crusaders on their toes. Stan Ross wrote this episode, obvious with lots of enthusiasm, a writer for the MONKEES and the MAN FROM UNCLE, among many other classics. Ross also acted in bit parts and produced many tv show episodes. Recommended must see IF you haven't already stuff. SEASON 3 EPISODE 14. DVD BOX SET.

Holy Huge Hairball, Batman!
justinboggan28 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Previously the delightful Catwoman had tried to get million of dollars; stole two golden cat statues to find a lost treasure, and other grander schemes, but in this episode what is Catwoman's big idea? To be the best dressed in Gotham City. Yes, that's it. It's as corny as it sounds (and not a good corny).

So, in order to look her best she starts stealing expensive clothing items, or as Robin called it, an "apparel binge", and since Batgirl won the award for best dressed, Catwoman is naturally jealous and her grudge is mostly on Batgirl for the episode. One of the items, a golden fleece, apparently will fetch high money from a country it belongs to, so a reasonably McGuffin.

Gone is sweet and striking Julie Newmar from the first two seasons (whom says in a late 1980's cast reunion she thought shooting "Mackenna's Gold" had a scheduling conflict) and in her place Ertha Kitt. There's nothing wrong with Kitt per se and she does has the trademark rolling cat growl which was quickly identified to the character, but the chemistry between West and Newmar is lacking and that rain check for a kiss, never came in the show. And apparently Batman's keen senses failed to notice Catwoman had grown inches shorter, a cup size or two smaller, and become black. Holy overlook, Batman! Kitt would have made an interesting Poison Ivy, had the show ever used that character, but as Catwoman, along with the lack of Newmar in the movie, fans feel cheated there was no continuation.

However, as Newmar is seen last season training a protégé, one could extrapolate that Ertha Kitt was a protégé-turned-master, since last seen on screen, Catwoman fell off a 100 foot drop presumably to her death (which is not the first time).

The climax of the film is a regular fight while Catwoman stands there. At the near end of the fight, Batgirl, Robin, and Batman are all standing in front of her, with their backs turned while they lift a carpet out from under Catwoman's henchmen, yet she never even tries to kick them or spray them. Not the fight and run Newmar we knew.

Over all this is filler and sort of like a Tut marble torture device.

Special mention to a funny but fleeting joke as Alfred plays the self expressed, "Oldest-living hippie" in the country.

Not the Catwoman we know and love but a one dimensional imposter
kevinolzak30 April 2016
"Catwoman's Dressed to Kill" was, like all but one Catwoman appearance before it, scripted by Stanley Ralph Ross, but you wouldn't know it from the presentation. Julie Newmar, busy filming "Mackenna's Gold" on location, was unavailable this third season, so in casting a new Catwoman the producers selected Eartha Kitt chiefly for her ability to speak French, though that would not come into play until her team up with Cesar Romero's Joker. Filmed afterwards but broadcast before, this sorry entry continues the downward slide from the Ffogg-bound triple header, a great villainess reduced to a pouting jealous snit over Batgirl's selection as 'Gotham City's Best Dressed Crime Fightress.' One would think that Batgirl would at least have more to do, but sadly she's just as helpless as she was in Londinium, easily captured by Catwoman and saved by the timely intervention of Alfred's amusing 'oldest living hippie.' Even the climactic fight sizes up as the season's worst, as Eartha Kitt simply stands and watches the mêlée without once budging from her self proclaimed throne, offering up a pitiful hiss at Batgirl before departing. Eartha may have seemed like purrfect casting in regard to her catlike qualities as a slinky singer (and short stature opposite Yvonne Craig), but it takes more than a great figure to capture the essence of the character, and her whining, one note interpretation remains torturous to watch in the absence of the beloved, multi dimensional Julie Newmar. And if she was such a great singer, why does her high pitched squeal grate on the ears like fingernails on a chalkboard?
