When Barney asks if there has been no response to the request for a German translator, because of the language difficulties communicating with the baby surrogate, he suggests maybe a German proprietor or restaurant. The audience laughs when Nick suggests "Little Argentina" two blocks down. This is funny because a common rumor had been that WWII Nazis had escaped to South America to avoid war crime prosecution, or to re-establish their ideology.
Professor McDowell mispronounces the word "Celtic" as "Sell-tic" when he is referring to the origin of an obscene word. That is the pronunciation of the basketball team, but the language and culture is pronounced "Kell-tic."
Mr. Kubrick and Fraulein Schlesinger are named for famous directors: Stanley Kubrick ("Dr. Strangelove", "2001") and John Schlesinger ("Midnight Cowboy", "The Marathon Man").
The inspired idea to try to find a translator via dining establishments specializing in food from the speaker's country is later repeated in Some Like It Hot (1984), when the Night Court crew needs to quickly find someone who can speak Russian. Reinhold Weege, who is here credited as a co-producer, went on to create Night Court.
