Alex....probably NOT a candidate for husband of the year!
planktonrules4 July 2021
Alex (Bill Bixby) is a terrible man and a terrible husband. He married his wife for her money and has been cheating on her for some time. But when Alex's mistress contacts the wife to tell her about the affair and to arrange a meeting, Alex loses it and ends up beating her to death. Soon after, when he sees his wife, he attacks her as well.

Over the next two weeks, no one has seen the wife. Her own brother has called repeatedly but Alex keeps telling him the wife is too sick to talk and won't let anyone see her. The brother-in-law naturally assumes she's dead and contacts Barnaby for help. What's next?

This is an interesting episode because twice Barnaby has theories that are wrong. And, the show offers some neat twists which kept me guessing. Overall, a very good episode and one where you can't help but hate Alex and enjoy seeing him get it in the end, as they ALWAYS do on detective shows of the era.

A pretty good episode, but it wasn't murder
tenderlovingtony6 May 2018
Denise Fraser used fighting words on Chandler and he knocked her down. Then she spotted a knife and thought for a moment and then came at him with it. What happened next was probably self-defense and almost certainly not murder. It might have been manslaughter. Why didn't he just call the police? (Then there wouldn't have been anything for Barnaby to do...)

HOW CAN BILL BIXBY BE THAT BAD????
tcchelsey4 June 2022
This was one of three episodes written by famous author Robert C. Dennis, who did many stories for CANNON and HAWAII FIVE O... but if you are an Alfred Hitchcock tv fan, then you know his work. Dennis wrote some of the best material for Hitch, which made the series a classic.

If you were a fan of MY FAVORITE MARTIAN, good guy Bill Bixby would never do this! But he did. This story is an about-face for Bixby who generally played lighter roles early in his career. It also showed what a dynamic actor he was, and here he comes off as a real cad. Bixby later played some similar roles on MANNIX.

Here, he's married to a wealthy "older" woman, naturally having an affair on the side --until his mistress wants him to get a divorce which would leave him flat broke. Do the ugly math. True, it's a familiar story, but fascinating, thanks to Robert Dennis. You'll be hooked in no time, sort of a cop show soap opera at play here.

Enter Barnaby Jones who plays a neat game of cat and mouse. There does remain one big question: was it REALLY murder? It is debatable, but the crime is carried out and there's a price to pay. Some great character bits, including Nora Marlowe as a housekeeper. Marlowe is best known for her recurring role on THE WALTONS, and scores of appearances in classic movies (NORTH BY NORTHWEST) and tv shows.

The ending is one you do not want to miss, even if it means a trip to the un luxurious, non Beverly Hills slammer for Bill.

SEASON 1, EPISODE 11 remastered CBS dvd box set.

Bill Bixby playing the bad guy
glitterrose14 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I think this is my first time watching "Barnaby Jones". It comes on Metv and the series comes on too late for me to watch it. I was only able to catch this episode because I had today off.

I'll start with Buddy Ebsen. I've been watching "The Beverly Hillbillies" lately and saw how hard of a time Max Baer Jr and Donna Douglas had with typecasting but it looks like Buddy landed on his feet and was able to get away from Jed Clampett.

Another point I want to link with what I mentioned above involves Bill Bixby. He worked for a lot of years and was able to move to different projects. But overall I think people think of nice guy characters he plays and might have a hard time even picturing him playing a bad guy. Bill's a great actor and I think he does a wonderful job here.

Also have to praise the writing. Bill's plays a golddigger in this episode and he's got a woman on the side. He gets angry with his side piece when she says she's called up his wife to invite her over. The side piece pretty much figures out on her own that any money belongs to his wife instead of to him. She rightfully calls him a gigolo and he ends up killing her after that's said.

There's also a storyline about the wife and how she's gone missing for a couple of weeks. Bill's character stalls people by saying she's not feeling well. I honestly thought he had killed the wife as well with the way he was acting but it turns out she's alive and Barnaby tracks her down and is able to nail Bill's character for the murder of his side piece.

Anyway, this episode was very enjoyable.
