Gary Lockwood's third time playing a villain on this show.
planktonrules22 July 2021
"Dangerous Gambit" marks the third time Gary Lockwood would appear on "Barnaby Jones".....and in total he was on the program six time! He generally played vicious villains....even more so than the usual characters on the detective show.

In this episode, two women are robbing their own bank. However, as one of them is leaving the bank, she sees Jerry (Lockwood) and panics...running into the road and being killed by a passing car. Barnaby is called onto the case because the driver is insured by Barnaby's client...and his job is to determine liability...and ends up exposing a robbery that the bank never knew had happened!

The most interesting casting choice was Linda Henning as one of the thieves. She had previously played Betty Jo for years on "Petticoat Junction"...a far cry from being a bank robber!

So is it any good? Yes. It's not an outstanding episode but solid and enjoyable.

HOW NOT TO ROB A BANK!
tcchelsey19 January 2024
Barnaby is again working for an insurance company in this tidy mystery, and with a twist. A bank is robbed --this time by two women! -- however one is accidentally hit and killed by a car. Barnaby, of course working for the insurance carrier, is called in to investigate, but soon uncovers the robbery, amounting to close to a quarter million dollars.

Gary Lockwood faithfully returns to the series, perhaps the most popular villain on the show, if not with the most appearances. Lynne Marta, playing Angie, is also a favorite bad girl, used frequently by producer Quinn Martin. I agree with the last reviewer, it comes as a surprise to see Linda Henning (PETTICOAT JUNCTION) shedding her good daughter image to be cast as a bad apple.

Ernest Pintoff directed, who would shortly leave Hollywood and work on location for HAWAII FIVE O.

An interesting change of pace story, always entertaining thanks to Gary Lockwood. From SEASON 4 EPISODE 21.
