Among my favorite actors and actresses are the family character actors...especially from the 1930s-50s. These folks seldom got a chance to star in films or TV shows, but they always seemed to give whatever they appeared in extra color. In the case of "The Best Way to Go", Gary Merrill and Jay C. Flippen get a chance to star in a TV episode. While Merrill did get to star in a few films, this is a rare starring vehicle for Flippen. Regardless, their excellent acting is the best thing about the show.
Dick Bowen (Merrill) is a well-respected newspaper man. Because of this, he's able to secure a job for his son, Dick Jr....and it turns out the young man is also a heck of writer. However, the boss (Flippen) is shocked when Dick tells him that someone he knows has Hodgkins and wonders how long that 'friend' might have to live. The boss and his co-workers assume Dick is talking about himself.
The show's 'big twist' comes as absolutely no surprise whatsoever. I don't think I'm a genius because I immediately guessed it and assume most watching the show did as well. Still, the acting is very good so you could do a lot worse than watching this show on YouTube.
