Clunky, rather amateur and doesn't convince
David has been a soldier, now he works for a construction firm. An accident sees him lose most of his toes on one foot with a concrete saw and he lands up in hospital where he is only plagued further by painful memories of his time as a squaddie.
This film looks fairly cheap and basic and, apart from a few good touches, that is mainly what it is. The plot relies very heavily on the character of David but, apart from learning actions, we don't get to know, understand or empathise with him at all. The blame for this is split down the middle. First of all Gough seems to be hoping that the actions maketh the man and that we will understand him by simply knowing what he has done if so, he is wrong in this aspiration because we don't. The other party is Edwards because his performance is so flat and basic that I honestly believed if he was viewed sideways that he would be millimetres deep.
Gough's direction is OK considering the total lack of budget, but the only moment I was actually impressed was by how he drew out the feel of a desert by increasing colours etc. Overall though this is a poor film, although I'm sure it had enough going for it to make a satisfactory student film for the University of Westminster. The character is the plot and the failure to draw us into him lies at the door of both writer and actor and means this film falls flat.
