Updated: In another sign that shows — even famous ones — can no longer “live forever” on streaming in the new era of media companies re-prioritizing profits, a slew of titles will be leaving Disney-controlled Hulu in the coming days as their license deals expire. For now, there are no plans to renew any of the pacts but that is always a possibility in the future.
‘Arrested Development’ and ‘Bob Newhart Show’
The list of departing series includes 18 series from Disney’s 20th Television, including the David E. Kelley Emmy-winning legal shows Ally McBeal, which the studio had been looking to remake, and The Practice, as well as fellow award-winners The Bob Newhart Show, Hill Street Blues and Arrested Development.
A slew of catalog titles from Fox and Paramount also are impacted, as well as a couple of properties each from Nat Geo and NBC News. Update: The license agreements for several...

Following through on a plan outlined in February by ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish, the company has launched a co-branded channel to pool content from Showtime and BET.
SHOxBET is a multiplex channel with a mix of series, feature films and documentaries. Its programming is designed to take advantage of its appeal to Black viewers for a number of Showtime series, which matches the longtime mission of BET. The two networks joined the same corporate family last December with the close of the ViacomCBS merger.
Starting Wednesday, the new channel takes the place of Showcase in the Showtime portfolio. (Genre-oriented Sho Beyond is also being phased out as a result of the co-branding effort.) Multiplexing began about two decades ago as a way to take advantage of improved pay-tv bandwidth to offer multiple channels of the same premium service.

In January, not long after the merger of Viacom and CBS closed, CBS chief creative officer and Showtime Networks chief exec David Nevins asked BET Networks president Scott Mills to share some of the pipeline projects that Mills was most excited about.
One of those series was Lena Waithe’s “Twenties,” which at that point hadn’t yet premiered on BET, the cabler that joined the combined company from the Viacom side. With Waithe’s “The Chi” already popular on Showtime, Nevins asked Mills for a programming window on Showtime for “Twenties.” In turn, Mills asked Nevins for a BET window for “The Chi.”
Showtime and BET’s shared popularity with African American viewers, said Mills, is the reason BET was incorporated into the Showtime premium networks group after the merger. And the “logical progression” of that common audience between Viacom and CBS’ respective cablers is SHOxBET, the Showtime plex channel that launched Wednesday,...

George Takei was a major get for “The Terror: Infamy,” the second season of the AMC horror anthology series. But recruiting him was as simple as a walk through the neighborhood.
“It turns out that [showrunner and co-creator] Alexander Woo is a neighbor of mine,” Takei says. “He lives about five blocks away from me and said he wanted to come over and talk to me about something. So he came over and told me about this project that he’s working on.”
The second season of “The Terror,” which premieres Aug. 12, is set during World War II in an internment camp for Japanese Americans. Takei, who plays a fisherman who’s being held, lived through the internment as a small child along with his family. “Escape at Dannemora” is the current frontrunner to take home the Best Limited Series Emmy, which would not only be a huge coup for Ben Stiller & Co., but would be a landmark win for Showtime as the network has never won the category before.
Showtime only has a mere six nominations in the category, which through various times over the years has been merged with and split from the Best TV Movie category. For comparison, NBC and PBS have a record 10 wins each. Last year, Showtime’s bid for “Patrick Melrose” marked the network’s first nomination in the category since “Sleeper Cell” 12 years prior. Its other nominations were for “Paris Trout”, “Hiroshima” (1996), “Armistead Maupin’s More Tales of the City” (1998) and “Armistead Maupin’s Further Tales of the City” (2001).

Secrets and Lies alum Michael Ealy and Mark Webber (Green Room) are set as leads opposite Cobie Smulders in Stumptown, ABC’s drama pilot from writer Jason Richman, Ruben Fleischer and ABC Studios.
Written by Richman, Stumptown is inspired by the graphic novels published by Oni Press. It follows Dex Parios (Smulders), a strong, assertive and unapologetically sharp-witted Army veteran working as a Pi in Portland, Or. With a complicated personal history and only herself to rely on, she solves other people’s messes with a blind eye toward her own.
Ealy will play Miles Hoffman, a detective with the Portland Police Department who is looking for escaped convict Samuel Kane — who’s probably going to pay a visit to Grey McConnell (Webber) any day now.

Read More: Attention, Filmmakers: Here's the 12-Step Guide to Co-Directing In our increasingly digital world, where analog film preservation has become all but endangered, let the struggles of acclaimed Cuban filmmaker Leon Ichaso be a call to arms to preserve your negative prints. An honoree at the Queens World Film Festival this week, Ichaso's esteemed career has run the gamut from Cuban indies specializing in urban realism ("El Super") to cable television miniseries on ShowTime ("Sleeper Cell") and A&E ("The Cleaner"). Unfortunately for the 67-year-old director, not even success could guarantee the preservation of his films' analog prints. As discussed in a recent New York Times article entitled "Filmmaker Won’t Weep for the Cuba He Left Behind," a handful of Ichaso's indies from the past three decades are no longer available due to a lack of preservation and archiving. This fate has met both his 1979 breakthrough debut...

Exclusive: Golden Globe-nominated Michael Ealy (Think Like A Man Too, Sleeper Cell) will star as civil rights activist Dr. Gilbert Mason in biopic A Civil Right, the first feature from Michael Benaroya and Darryl Taja’s new Revolution Media shingle. The film tells the story of the Biloxi physician who led nonviolent “wade-ins” against segregation on Gulf Coast beaches between 1959 and 1963, protests that sparked violence from whites and resulted in the first successful anti-discrimination suit against the state of Mississippi. Mason’s activism landed him at #3 on the FBI’s civil rights agitators most-watched list, and he went on to successfully fight for school desegregation in the state and help form the Council of Federated Organizations (Cofo). He served as President of the Mississippi NAACP for three decades before his death in 2006.

Fox has cancelled the sci-fi crime series "Almost Human." The show, which starred Karl Urban (the Star Trek and The Lord of the Rings franchises) and Michael Ealy ("Sleeper Cell," "Common Law"), premiered last November and concluded its 13-episode run in March. Executive produced by J.J. Abrams ( Star Trek , "Lost") and J.H. Wyman ("Fringe," The Mexican ), "Almost Human" was set in a future world where police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. The series followed the week-to-week missions of John Kennex (Urban), a detective and sole survivor of a devastating police ambush, and his robot partner, Dorian (Ealy), as this buddy-cop duo solve cases and fight to keep the lid on dangerously...

When ABC Family announced a trio of new drama pilots in development earlier this week, one of them -- "Alice in Arabia" -- sparked immediate notice and anger.
Why is that? What caused Muslim groups and many across the Internet to come down so hard on a TV show that no one has actually seen yet? Is it just a knee-jerk response by over-sensitive people?
Or could it have more to with how American television programs have dealt with Muslims in the past? Any red flags on a current show have to be colored by years of terrorists, torturers and protested normalcy.
The current controversy erupted Monday (March 17) when ABC Family announced it had greenlit a pilot for "Alice in Arabia," along with two other dramas. An official description of the show was released as well:

Oded Fehr (The Mummy franchise) has landed a series regular role in ABC’s Richard Lagravenese drama pilot. In the vein of Dangerous Liaisons, the untitled project is set in New York and revolves around the love and rivalry between two equally matched, powerful socialites, Philip Fitzgerald Julien (Rufus Sewell) and Margot Worth Cole, who play out their obsessive attraction and seduction of each other through their manipulation of others. Fehr, repped by Paradigm and Add Agency, will play Anderson Cole, Margot’s ex-husband and one of the Forbes 500 whose power has resulted in expanding a multimillion-dollar company into a multibillion-dollar corporation. Anderson has fooled three beautiful women into marrying him and is working on Trophy No. 4. The CW is developing a drama about a young female FBI agent who goes undercover to infiltrate a terrorist sleeper cell operating out of a prestigious New York university. The Comic-Con panel practically produces itself! According to Deadline, the still-untitled show is "described as Alias meets Homeland," though we prefer to think of it as "21 Jump Street meets Felicity meets Sleeper Cell." No word yet on if the cell comprises undergraduates or grad students, what hunky professor our heroine will of course fall in love with, or which higher-up at the FBI will eventually shout into a walkie-talkie, "Get her out of there!"...

The biggest problem that Fox’s new sci-fi cop procedural Almost Human will face in the coming weeks is the undue burden of expectation. Creator and showrunner J.H. Wyman previously helmed the late, lamented Fringe, while Almost Human‘s promos have heavily featured its geek triumvirate of executive-producers: Wyman, J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk. Another unmistakably major draw is Almost Human‘s recognizable cast, led by Star Trek‘s Karl Urban and Sleeper Cell‘s Michael Ealy.
With many talented individuals working in front of and behind the camera, the heat was unmistakably on for Almost Human to arrive on Sunday as a bona fide television event, featuring awards-worthy performances, stellar special effects and a compelling storyline to complement its already high-concept hook. Does it check all of those boxes? No, of course it doesn’t.

There are plenty of reasons to watch this new featurette for Fox‘s upcoming series Almost Human. One, it’s from J.J. Abrams and J.H. Wyman (Fringe). Two, you start getting an even better feel for what the show is like. And three, because the actors talk about the show in their “regular” voices, we get to hear New Zealander Karl Urban pronounce the word “future” like “fyoo’ cha”. I’d watch for that reason alone:

"Almost Human," a new Fox series presented at press tour, promises lots of action and, more importantly, an uneasy working relationship between grumpy cop Det. John Kennex (Karl Urban, "Star Trek") and android Dorian (Michael Ealy, "Sleeper Cell"). For some in the audience, it all brought back memories of the 1989 TV series "Alien Nation," but creator/executive producer J.H. It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Well, one of them, anyway. Comic-Con is right around the corner, and the networks are announcing their premiere dates for their fall schedules. The hope and possibilities make me all misty-eyed. We’ve heard from The CW, and now we’ve heard from Fox.
Sadly, of course, the Fox schedule no longer includes Fringe. Happily, it does include two shows with Fringe connections: Sleepy Hollow‘s co-creators are Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, co-creators (with J.J. Abrams) of Fringe. Fortunately we won’t have to wait too long for the Sleepy Hollow premiere, as it will arrive on Monday, September 16 at 9/8c.
Unfortunately we’ll need to wait longer – I Hate Waiting – for my personal pick for most eagerly anticipated new fall show, Almost Human; we won’t be seeing it until Monday, November 4 at 8/7c. And the Fringe connection there?...

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the second announced yesterday. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on Fox.
While "The Following" proved a breakout winner, Fox had few success stories last season. So, it is going a bit more ambitious this year with numerous dramas, comedies and one-off "event series".
Several pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen including the family of government-sanctioned assassins drama "Boomerang," the adaptation of Lauren Oliver's book trilogy "Delirium" about a world where love is illegal, the legal interns workplace comedy "To My Assistant," the U.S.S. Lexington-set "The Wild Blue," and "The List" about the hunt for a thief who stole a file containing the secret identities of people in the Witness Security Program,

Fox has one of its better slates coming your way with the new season, especially if you take the midseason shows into account. Some of these shows may not jump out at you now as must-see, but some of them are going to take over, if I’m any judge anyway.
Clear showcase offerings Dads, Almost Human, and Us & Them are guaranteed to take off early. Almost Human has J.J. Abrams recognition to pull people in, though it looks to be a show that could flounder after a few episodes, even if I hope it doesn’t. The other two are going to become hits. Unfortunately, we have to wait until mid-season for the Gavin & Stacey remake.
Rake also looks like a winner, as long as the translation can be made to work as an Americanized product, and the show actually delivers what made the Australian original so brilliant.
