If there was one thing missing from Ridley Scott’s “The Martian,” it was the true, visceral experience of being right there on the red planet as Matt Damon’s Mark Watney struggled to make his way home to Earth. Thanks to the magic of virtual reality, that’s no longer a concern. Now you too can can trapped on a distant planet with little — if any! — hope of returning to only other world you’ve ever known.
Fox has today announced the creation of “The Martian: Vr Experience,” a new interactive experience that allows its viewers to participate “from astronaut Mark Watney’s perspective, performing tasks that will facilitate his chances for survival. Viewers can fly onto the surface of Mars, steer at zero gravity through space, drive a rover navigating over craters and experience key scenes from the hit film in a 360-degree virtual reality environment.” Executive...

Last night during The Walking Dead, Sony Pictures premiered the trailer for Life. No, this isn’t the Anton Corbijn-directed Robert Pattinson biography of the Life Magazine photographer from last year. This is the 2017 science fiction thriller about an international space crew that discovers life on Mars. Directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House, Child 44) […]

American Horror Show returns with a visually gorgeous episode that proves there's no other show like it on television...
This review contains spoilers.
4.1 Monsters Among Us
Tod Browning's 1932 horror film Freaks is a bonafide classic thanks in no small part to Browning's brilliant use of “us versus them.” On one side, you have the outwardly terrifying freaks and on the other side the so-called “normal” folks as represented by Cleopatra and Hercules. The freaks look scary, but deep down inside, they're the good people. They accept Cleopatra because Hans loves her, but when Cleopatra and Hercules betray the trust of the sideshow folks, the freaks protect their own in one of the most terrifying sequences in movie history. Terrifying yes, but also well-deserved in the end, as Cleopatra and Hercules prove themselves to be despicable.
Freaks is a film existing in a genre of one. If you've seen it,...

Mars Needs Moms starts out at a run, and never lets up until you're already on Mars and far too involved to let it go. It would be nice if a lot more movies had the self-assurance to reel you in first, and let you figure things out later, rather than spelling everything out before anything happens. Funny, it's the kid movie that has this much respect for its audiences.
Young Milo has had his mother abducted by aliens, and being the brave and foolish lad that he is, he's chased them down to the ship, where he is accidentally snatched and brought along for the ride. Upon arrival, Milo is bagged, tagged, and put into storage, but he is soon rescued by Gribble, an adult human who is inexplicably living in the bowels of Mars' apparently planet-scale trash heap.

Mars Needs Moms might go down in history as the biggest bomb of 2011. With a budget of $150 million and a box-office gross of $21 million, it’s definitely one of Disney’s worst investments in recent years. So, the studio has to have very high hopes for the animated movie’s DVD and Blu-ray release. According to Amazon, Mars Needs Moms will be on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D on Aug. 9.
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment hasn’t released the official details for the disc release yet, but from what Amazon has listed, it looks like the family film will be getting a rollout similar to Disney’s more successful animation this year, Gnomeo & Juliet, which is also coming out in three disc sets. Gnomeo will be getting a decent amount of special features, and we’re guessing Mars will too. Update: Disney has confirmed the date. Scroll down for special features.

"Lost" picked up the pieces from an embarrassing series low audience just a couple weeks ago to try and climb back to its average for the season. "Life On Mars," however, showed there really could be life ... on Mars. "Lost" earned a 5.5 rating/8 share, according to Fast National ratings from Nielsen Media Research. That was up nearly 6 percent from its previous outing, but still 8 percent off its season average. It was easily beat by "American Idol" on Fox, which earned a 13.9/21, and was bested by a rerun of "Criminal Minds" by 14.5 percent. "Lost" handedly beat "Life" on NBC, as well as a rerun of "90210" on The CW, according to Zap2it. The one series that ABC had high hopes on got a little bump in the ratings as it ended its abbreviated run. "Life On Mars" grabbed a 3.8/6, ...

For two full seasons of the British series "Life On Mars," the producers kept viewers guessing about the condition of the show's protagonist, a Twenty-First Century cop who got hit by a car and woke up in 1973. Was Sam Tyler crazy? In a hallucinatory coma? Or had he actually traveled through time? When ABC announced the American version of "Life On Mars," the producers insisted that the more fantastical elements of the original would be toned down, and that the Us "Life On Mars" would be more about relationships and police-work in the early ‘70s than about the trippy mysteries surrounding Sam Tyler. And the producers were true to their word—until last night.

On paper, putting "Life On Mars" on after "Lost" seemed like a good idea. But if the first week is an indicator, it could be a killer for the cop time travel series. "Life On Mars" earned a 4.0 rating/7 share on ABC Wednesday night, according to Fast National Ratings from Nielsen Media Research. That was down more than 25 percent from the last time it aired a new episode just before Thanksgiving, when ABC was still airing it against "Eleventh Hour" on Thursday nights. But the new Wednesday slot was not so busy. In fact, "Mars" only had to compete with a rerun of "CSI: NY" as well as a new episode of "Law & Order" on NBC, both of which beat "Mars" handedly. "Law & Order" drew a 48 percent larger audience than "Life On Mars" despite having a rerun as a lead-in. "Mars" can't ...

When you've got as strong a concept as Life On Mars, the big trick is how to keep it fresh. In a movie, the trouble would be in making sure the set-up and follow-through flow as convincingly as possible: guy gets hit by car, guy wakes up in 1973, stuff happens, we figure out if its time travel or hallucination, the credits roll. Perhaps a bit of casual nudity tossed in for the kiddies. But we're not talking movie here, we're talking TV show, which means we have a storyline with an indeterminate ending point. Ideally, Mars is going to be on the air for years to come, which changes how you handle Sam Tyler's dilemma. It can't resolve until the last episode, so what kind plots do you throw out in the meantime? There's got to be something to fill the spaces between clues and visions. If "The...
