"A lugubrious, darkly funny film-noirette based on the tale by Edward Gory." - Mill Valley Film Festival -
tom-90010 October 2005
The Blue Aspic's black humor and operatic dramatics captures the subtle and macabre essence of Edward Gorey's illustrated story on which the film is based. In addition to it's strange humor, the film's surreal ambiguous production design by Sally Sherwood, and stunning high-contrast "antiqued" cinematography by Matthew Boyd, place The Blue Aspic in a world all to itself. Actor Bruce Burns' intense and disturbing performance coupled with Caitlin Talbot's stunning and powerful presence creates volcanic screen chemistry. Composer Anton Patzner's gorgeous score, and Editor Patrick Nelson Barns' dynamic editing make the film unfold like a Puccini opera married with a Raymond Chandler Novel.
