Taiwan Cinefest, now in its third year, is the largest European Taiwanese film festival, taking place in London and other cities around the UK. This year, the festival consists of 4 features and a collection of shorts, aiming to showcase a diverse selection of Taiwanese cinema that ranges from art house to mainstream blockbuster hits. The films featured this year were the funeral themed comedy drama “7 Days in Heaven”, true life tragedy “No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti”, gangster hit “Monga”, and Taiwanese pop king Leehom Wang’s enjoyable romantic comedy “Love in Disguise” (previously reviewed here on the site). 7 Days in Heaven Recently nominated for Best Film at the Golden Horse Awards, where Peng Fon Wu took home the Best Supporting Actor prize, “7 Days in Heaven” was a commercial as well as critical hit, ranking 2nd at the domestic box office, out-grossed only by “Monga”. No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti (I Can't Live Without You) is an odd little film. Its one major weakness is it hardly seems to be about anything. While it tells the story of an itinerant Kaohsiung labourer who struggles to keep custody of his daughter in the face of bureaucratic indifference, it's not about one man against the world, and it neither paints its lead as underdog white knight nor its nominal villains as cruel or heartless.
At the same time, thanks in large part to this refusal to sully its dreamy, meditative ambience with any kind of reductive message - not to mention a stunning performance from Chen Wen-Pin and some truly wonderful cinematography - Taiwanese director Leon Dai's second film (after 20-Something Taipei) proves one of the best films out of the country in years.

Korea’s Mother won the top honor at the 4th Asian Film Awards, picking up Best Picture, while Chinese and Hong Kong films sweeped the other major award categories. After the grand opening of Hkiff on Sunday night, the ceremony has been held on the following day, adding an extra kick to the film festival.
