The shoe effect was created by Michael Wilde who played the wacky Shoeshine (who also directed the shoeshine scene).
Michael recently recounted the event: "Each beat of the scene was a complicated comedy of errors which made it more difficult to execute realistically. The scene involved Rose (Kate Ceberano), scuffing her shoes on the way to an audition. She goes to a shoeshine to remove the scuff and polish them--it's her last best pair. The shoeshine juggles the shoes while polishing them, the way American Shoeshines do, and one is accidently flung. A blind man with his dog passes and the dog starts to play with the shoe. The blind man wrestles it away, smells it and flings it into the fountain.
"That was the easy part... saying how the scene should run. Doing it was another matter. With no money and no budget, how do you create a Bullet POV of a flying shoe? Well, we had two shoes... We did a Medium Long Shot of the shoe landing in the fountain, then tied the other shoe with powdered fishing line to a 3ft long stick and had the camera track it".

Tony Ayres (the production assistant) now produces for TV while sometimes slumming it as a script editor. Michael Wilde had the opportunity to work with him again in "Dogwoman" in 2000.
Kate Ceberano's last acting job was as Princess Liliuokalani in "Molokai: The Story of Father Damien" with Kris Kristofferson and Peter O'Toole in 1999. Acting misses her but her music career takes presidence, having just released her new album "Bittersweet" in April 2009.
Nick Carrafa who played William, recently played Carlo Lavilla in "Rush" in 2008.
Jan Friedl who played the Chef recently played Rebecca Bernstein in the Australian cop show "City Homicide". She was actually the Chef of the restaurant the scene took place in. Suffice to say, her boss wouldn't give her the day off.
Michael Wilde who played the shoeshine, currently finances motion pictures (see Virtual Studios), is a production consultant, talent manager, screenwriter, and sometimes still acts. He is currently in development with Fighting Destiny, Hour Of Darkness, and The Unicorn.
Kim Beissel and Richard Healey have left the Industry.
