Way too cavalier effort from James Avalon
lor_17 November 2016
My disappointment with watching "Silk Stockings" was exacerbated by recently viewing a masterpiece from James Avalon, the out-of-print surreal beauty "Trial by Copulation". "Silk" is described by James as a light-hearted whodunit, but he can't resist throwing in near-constant jokes or mockery of his material, a definite turnoff.

It's set in the milieu of lingerie models, with Dani Woodward as prime suspect after beautiful Dasha's corpse is found on a couch near a photo shoot of Dani and fellow model Gia Jordan. Reno is cast in a character (with XXX action included) role for a change as the goofy cheesecake photographer Vladimir Petrovsky, and sure enough one of the other players jokingly calls him Fabio at one point, a reference to his alternate porn moniker.

Dale DaBone shows up as the detective, far more horny than intrepid, assigned to the murder case, with his comical, non-sex partner Damian in tow. Damian looks very much like Woody Harrelson, giving the team a decidedly prescient "True Detective" feel.

Film quickly goes way over the top when the cops call on psychic consultant Hannah Harper, a great star for the Sin City label at the time and always worth watching. She hams it up, touching objects which results in a series of flashbacks showing what she has mystically picked up to explain what actually happened. This is all nonsense, as Avalon realizes, so he sends it up.

Sex content makes the silliness watchable, with uninhibited Harper giving us a d.p. (her sex scene turns out to be imaginary), and Dasha backed up by other talent including Keri Sable. Solution of the actual mystery is predictable and anti-climactic.

So fans would be wise to hunt down a copy of "Trial by Copulation" and give this ephemeral "Stockings" a pass.
