- The original version (as released on DVD) runs for 57 minutes. The TV broadcast was edited down to 47 minutes. The differences are as follows:
- At 6:15, the DVD edits out Christopher Lee in front of London Bridge throwing to commercial: "We'll be right back with The Many Faces of Sherlock Holmes". However, the TV broadcast edits out a segment of Lee in the sitting room saying, "Sherlock Holmes. One of the most fascinating characters I have ever portrayed. His partner, Dr. John H. Watson, described his strengths and weaknesses with ruthless accuracy. Knowledge of literature, philosophy, astronomy, and politics: nil. Knowledge of botany: variable, well up in belladonna, opium, and poisons generally. Knowledge of geology, chemistry, and anatomy: profound, but unsystematic. Knowledge of sensational literature: immense. He appears to know every detail of every horror perpetrated in the century. He is an expert boxer, swordsman, and singlestick player. Plays the violin, well. Self-poisoner by tobacco and other substances. The best and wisest man whom I have ever known: Sherlock Holmes."
- At 21:25(dvd)/21:02(tv) - The TV broadcast edits out the clip of Holmes sitting with Moriaty from "Secret Weapon", thus editing out approx. 3 minutes.
- At 24:57(dvd)/21:32(tv) - The TV broadcast edits out the clip from "The Woman in Green", thus editing out approx. 1 minute.
- At 27:37(dvd)/23:17(tv) - The TV broadcast cuts to a commercial break graphic, then edits out lots of "Terror by Night" train scene footage, thus editing out approx. 2 minutes.
- At 30:30(dvd)/24:43(tv) - The TV broadcast edits out the clip from "Dressed To Kill", then catches up with the DVD on the scene where a person is putting tape on Holmes' mouth, thus editing out approx. 2 minutes.
- At 48:32(dvd)/41:10(tv) - The DVD cuts out Lee throwing to commercial: "We shall return shortly to share with you a few classic moments from the many faces of Sherlock Holmes."
- At 52:11(dvd)/45:05(tv) - The TV broadcast edits out SEVERAL black & white movie clips, resuming with last color clip, thus editing out approx. 2 minutes.
- Cascadia Entertainment released the entire 57-minute version on DVD, though obviously without permission from copyright-holder Avery Productions, who released their own DVD. Cascadia added a fade out during the Special Thanks section of the end credits, so as to hide this production company and copyright information: "Distribution by Avery Productions in cooperation with International Tele-Films Enterprizes and Scott Entertainment Inc. (c) 1985 Avery Productions, All Rights Reserved". Thus, the last 20 seconds of the end credits on the Cascadia DVD is simply a black screen with the music continuing to play during it.
