There are all sorts of things that make fantasy such a rich and absorbing genre. The monsters, the quests, the epic battles, the weapons ... the list goes on and on. We accept at face value that the worlds of fantasy involve a great deal of magic, and thusly we suspend our disbelief when spells are cast and potions are concocted. But it can't all be flights of fancy. In order for us to relate to the story, there must be some truths, some attributes of the real world, for us to sink our teeth into.

The new movie Moon is kind of lucky, actually. I've seen some online complaints about its release schedule, because Sony Pictures Classics will start out very small with it and build it to a few hundred theaters or so. The flipside is that international distribution is pretty thorough, so obviously there's some belief in the film.
But the complaints forget one thing: Limited releases create a craving. That's why you see ridiculous per-theater averages for movies in fewer theaters. The hope is that the first weekend is huge in New York and Los Angeles, and that will leverage some theaters is smaller metro areas not already included in the run of engagement.
But the studio would lose its ass putting a small, psychological sci-fi movie like Moon in 3,000 theaters all at once. There's just not enough of an audience initially to find a suitable return that way. So if you...

A two-minute clip of Focus Features animated movie "9" has been debuted via MTV. Displaying what Elijah Wood's 9 has to battle with in the film, the video footage opens with a capture of a mechanical monster attempting to steal a sapient rag doll's soul. As the monster ties the rag doll, 9 and other dolls come to the rescue.
Ignoring the danger, they launch attack on the monster to release the captured doll. However, the rescue attempt soon turns into disaster. The monster gets its hands on Jennifer Connelly's 7 and makes its slithering escape. Although at one point 9 manages to grab a hold on the monster's broken tail, he has to see the monster moves away with 7 in its hand after he is slammed into what seems to be a giant book.
A feature-length adaptation of Shane Acker's short film of the same name, "9" follows a sapient rag doll...

You’ve put up with my raving about the comic genius of British satirist Armando Iannucci for long enough now and the time has come to partake in the goodness. Yes, with the UK theatrical release coming in April - IFC have the film for North America but have not yet set a date - the first trailer has arrived and it is absolutely fantastic. The only downside to the trailer format is that censorship concerns mostly prevent the exposure of Peter Capaldi’s Malcolm Tucker character in his full, foul-mouthed glory but still, this is brilliant stuff. And for the record, not only does it turn out that James Gandolfini does have a sense of humor he is absolutely fantastic in this.
The Us President and UK Prime Minister suddenly fancy a war. But it’ll be quick this time. Promise! The Us General Miller doesn’t think so...

Two minutes of the premiere episode of Fox’s Dollhouse (set to air February 13) have been released ... to Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello. So you have to go over to his blog to see them, but for Joss Whedon fans who are eagerly awaiting a new show from their lord and master (until Fox prematurely cancels it and they get angry all over again), it’s more than worth it.

Though his filmography his still on the short side, Malaysian born, American trained, Taiwan based film maker Ho Wi Ding is already building a name for himself around the world thanks to a string of impressive short films that have been rolling out on the major festival circuit. He first turned heads with the Sars-themed Respire and this past year saw the arrival of Summer Afternoon, a deceptively simple story of three young adults out for a drive on the titular summer’s afternoon. There’s a love triangle involved, and jilted feelings, but the immediate hook into the film is an impressive two minute single tracking shot, the opening drive shot seamlessly from the exterior of the car with a fluid, floating bit of camera work.
There is no trailer for the film yet but Ho has graciously given us permission to post that opening two minutes so you can check the shot out.
