The different faces of one actor in one role
phbalanced26 November 2006
How interesting it was to see Roy Dupuis in a film in which he presented different versions of the death-row inmate character Kevin Barlow in this film which was filmed in two versions, English and French. As other reviewers have mentioned, each version starts with the inmate's last meal and what could have happened and his behaviour affected the prison director and staff in how they carried out his execution by lethal injection. The director always maintained that he had a rigid schedule and followed a specific script, but depending on Barlow's attitude and resulting behaviour and how he interacted wth the staff, the outcome was the same. An interesting concept that leaves viewers with room to debate about why Kevin Barlow acted the way he did and what may have been going through the warden's mind as he carried out the sentence.

Interesting concept

I saw this at the recent Brisbane International Film Festival and i was quite surprised that you could make a movie around the phrase "you are what you eat".

The movie tells the story of the last couple of hours of a man on death row and the warden tasked with executing him. The movie is a series of flashbacks as the warden constructs a letter to send to the man's mother. As he does so the audience is given several different versions of what could have happened. Each version begins with his last meal. Each time it is different and each time his reaction to his impending death is different.

Strong performances from both of the leads carry the movie which starts strong but after about 4 or 5 meals i began to lose interest generally and it was only these performances that kept me there. Good movie pity about the ending.

Good Idea

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie on Rogers on Demand.I doubt that very many people would appreciate this movie unless watching it you are in it purely for the acting. It is a interesting concept and nothing more. I think someone came up with the idea and it was just a matter of turning it into a movie. I don't think they considered that the concept and acting alone would not make a entertaining 90 minutes. This movie is about a inmate on death row (Roy Dupuis, who also starred in The Rocket: Maurice Richard)who is awaiting his execution by needle ejection and throughout the movie we see some of the different versions of what could have happened, starting with his last meal. With every meal we see a whole different Kevin Barlow and a whole different set of events. There are no twists in this movie and no action whatsoever. It is pure drama with mostly unknown actors that tries to grab your attention with the concept of "you are what you eat." There is enough drama in life without watching this movie, but if you want to see it for the concept alone and great acting performances by the leads Roy Dupuis and Serge Houde, then this is the movie for you!
