If you haven’t yet seen A24 and Saint Maud director Rose Glass’ new movie Love Lies Bleeding, you should definitely get out there and support it in theaters while you can. The critically acclaimed romantic thriller is one of this year’s best movies so far, driven by incredible lead performances from Katy O’Brian and the always compelling Kristen Stewart.
Katy O’Brian just landed a huge role in Mission Impossible 8, but what’s next for Kristen Stewart? Well, for starters, don’t expect to see her in any Marvel movies anytime soon.
Stewart tells the “Not Skinny but Not Fat” podcast, “I will likely never do a Marvel movie … it sounds like a fucking nightmare, actually.” She further explains, “You would have to put so much money and so much trust into one person … and it doesn’t happen.”
“And so therefore what ends up happening is this algorithmic,...

Based on its setup, The New Daughter would appear to be a ghost story. A troubled novelist moves his two children into a large and isolated house in rural South Carolina, and immediately they start to experience things that cannot be so readily explained. The audience might soon expect to see spirits of the dead haunting the film’s family, yet the fact is, something else entirely lurks on this cursed property.
Kevin Costner was coming off positive reviews for his villainous role in the psychological thriller Mr. Brooks when he was cast as the father in The New Daughter. Also joining the first directorial feature from Rec screenwriter Luis Berdejo was Pan’s Labyrinth star Ivana Baquero. Things don’t always work out for child actors in Hollywood. But this year’s Oscar nominations showed three promising paths to grown-up success. Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”), Kirsten Dunst (“The Power of the Dog”), and Kodi Smit-McPhee (also “Power of the Dog”) earned their first nominations this year after long careers that started before any of them could legally drive.
It’s certainly not unheard of for child stars to become Oscar nominees or winners as adults. There are examples going as far back as Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, who made names for themselves as children and earned multiple Oscar noms as adults, and Rooney ended up winning an Honorary Oscar in 1983 for his lifetime achievements. Jodie Foster earned her first Oscar nomination for “Taxi Driver” (1976) at age 14 before growing up to win two Best Actress trophies for “The Accused” (1988) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991). Natalie Portman broke...

Exclusive: The White Lotus standout Brittany O’Grady and Nat Wolff (The Fault In Our Stars) are set to star opposite Christoph Waltz in Prime Video’s dark comedy workplace thriller series The Consultant, from Servant creator Tony Basgallop, WandaVision executive producer Matt Shakman, MGM Television and Amazon Studios.
The Consultant explores the sinister relationship between boss and employee, asking how far we will go to get ahead, and to survive. It is inspired by Bentley Little’s 2015 novel, a satire centered on Mr. Patoff, a bow-tie-wearing consultant who comes to the rescue of CompWare after a prominent merger falls through and soon seemingly starts running the company.
Wolff will play Craig, a disillusioned but talented mobile app developer, working for a games studio in Los Angeles. O’Grady plays Elaine, an ambitious assistant to the CEO, who, in the wake of a tragedy, sees an opportunity to accelerate her career.

Without any new releases to pose a threat, Disney’s animated musical fable “Encanto” has again notched the No. 1 spot on domestic box office charts.
In its second weekend of release, “Encanto” has collected $12.38 million from 3,980 venues in the U.S. and Canada. That marks a 54% drop from its debut and pushes the film’s two-week total to $57.6 million domestically.
A decline of roughly 50% between its first and second weekend is in line with Disney’s recent Thanksgiving releases, such as 2016’s “Moana” (down 50%), 2017’s “Coco” (down only 45%) 2018’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” (down 54%) and 2019’s “Frozen II” (down 59%). Prior Disney animated features were able to conjure stronger starts at the domestic box office, however, those films weren’t playing in theaters during a pandemic. This article contains spoilers for Lost in Space season 3.
There’s nothing a human being loves to see on screen more than a robot.
Maybe it’s because the idea of a robot forces us to reckon with the act of creation and ultimately empathize with whatever created us having to watch helplessly as we stumble from one existential crisis to another. Or maybe it’s just because robots are cute and say “beep beep boop boop.”
Whatever the reason, no sci-fi franchise understands humanity’s fascination with robots better than Lost in Space. The 1965 TV series established one of the all-time iconic robot designs with the bumbling yet helpful B-9 model environmental control unit dubbed “Robot.” The 1998 Lost in Space film then reimagined Robot as a sleek and powerful protector for the lost Robinson family.

Bowing at June’s Malaga Film Festival in Spain, where it swept three prizes in its edgier Zonacine sidebar – best film, actor (Jorge Motos) and its Audience Award – Spaniard Alex Montoya’s second feature “Lucas” has been picked up by Spain’s Filmin SVOD service, the country’s biggest streaming platform for art pics and upscale TV series.
International sale rights on “Lucas” are handled by Begin Again Films.
The acquisition continues a close relationship between the Spanish filmmaker and the Spanish streamer, with Montaya’s debut feature, “Asamblea,” become the most successful premiere on the platform during the Covid-19 pandemic. Montoya now returns with one of the buzz titles at this year’s Malaga Film festival.
Produced by Raw Pictures and Telespan 2000‚ “Lucas” turns on an adolescent who after the death of his father, an event that turns his life upside down, ends up selling photos of himself to an older man,...

Move over, Clint Eastwood — the 91-year-old “Cry Macho” director isn’t the only nonagenarian American director intent on staying busy. At the age of 94, filmmaker Jerry Schatzberg hasn’t directed a movie since 2000’s “The Day the Ponies Come Back,” but still feels like he could make his swan song. “I’ve recently decided I’d really like to do one more film,” the New York-based director said in a phone interview with IndieWire last week, sounding a bit raspy but energized nonetheless. “I don’t know what it is yet.”
He added that he recently heard an interview on Wnyc with author Atticus Lish about his novel “The War for Gloria.” Curious, Schatzberg sought out the book and has been thinking about it adapting it. “Most of my friends can’t believe I’m the age I am because I don’t act it,” Schatzberg said. “I don’t really think about it.

Jerry Schatzberg is among the great American filmmakers who changed the landscape in the 1970s, but his name is one that has taken some time to get the recognition it deserves. While he may not have landed with the same initial impact as a Francis Ford Coppola or Martin Scorsese, the years have been kind to films like The Panic in Needle Park and Scarecrow, invigorating a passion that ranks them as some of the decade’s very best.
A renowned photographer with work in magazines such as Vogue and Esquire, Schatzberg is also responsible for the iconic cover of Bob Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde. This was all done before he made his feature debut with 1970’s Puzzle of a Downfall Child, starring then-fiancée Faye Dunaway. That would begin a career working with some of the best actors the world has ever seen, from Al Pacino and Gene Hackman...

There is an alien bowling alley hidden in the cosmos. Yes, that sounds about right for this show.
The Legends had to bowl for their lives, as well as the survival of Earth, on DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 Episode 11, because, how else would they save the world?
After a rather un-Legend-like outing with DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 Episode 10, the writers got back on track with an overly fun bowling-inspired hour.
"The Final Frame" was broken into three stories that all came together in the end.
Sara, Mick, Astra, and Spooner were invited -- against their will -- to a cosmic bowling alley called Galaxy Lanes. Gary helped Ava pick out a wedding dress -- which we hope is not the one she ends up wearing. And Nate and Zari 1.0 went on a date in the woods.
Eventually, all of the Legends ended up in the same space and story,...

It’s blockbuster season and Amazon Prime is celebrating by bringing a major action film to its stream.
That’s right, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by none other than The Tomorrow War on July 2. The year is 2051 and mankind is locked in a vicious war against an alien species. Our only hope is to go back in time and find…Chris Pratt. Ok, perhaps that’s a little reductive of the film’s plot. Future humanity also comes back to bring Sam Richardson to the future.
In terms of originals, there isn’t much else to speak of on Amazon Prime this month. The only other major release is The Pursuit of Love on July 30. This BBC series is directed by Emily Mortimer and takes place during the WWII era and follows two cousins as they navigate their lives. Lily James and Andrew Scott star.

Antonio Pérez‘ Seville-based Maestranza Films, producer of Benito Zambrano’s “Solas” and “The Sleeping Voice”), and Kiko Martinez Madrid-based Nadie Es Perfecto, the company behind Álex de la Iglesia’s “The Bar,” have teamed to co-produce a remake of Bigas Luna’s cult horror modern classic “Anguish” (1987).
Spain-born but based in Los Angeles, Spanish director F. Javier Gutiérrez is attached to direct. Gutiérrez’ second feature, horror “Rings” –part of the several remakes saga starting with Gore Verbinski’s “The Ring”– nabbed $83 million worldwide.
Luna’s original “Anguish” followed an ophthalmologist with a bizarre hobby –collecting eyes– and a dominant mother. Following his mother’s orders, he goes to a movie-theater, where he meets two friends. The feature they are watching, however, didsrupts their perception of reality.

Paris-based Totem Films announced Friday that it is handling sales on Iranian Behtash Sanaeeha and Maryam Moghaddam’s Berlin Film Festival competition entry, “Ballad of a White Cow.” Totem Films will bring the drama onto the market at early March’s European Film Market (EFM).
The pick-up is sure to draw attention. Launched in 2019 by Agathe Valentin, Laure Parleani and Berenice Vincent, sales and production company Totem Films made waves at the Cannes Film Market last year, scoring vast international sales on “Gagarine,” one of the Cannes Festival official selection’s biggest arthouse breakouts.
Thanks to Asghar Farhadi’s “A Separation” (2011), Jafar Panahi’s “Taxi” (2015) and Mohammad Rasoulof’s “There is No Evil” (2020), Iran has won Berlin’s top award, a Golden Bear for best feature, more times in the last decade than any other country in the world.
While those directors are established values, Sanaeeha and Moghaddam are more fast-emerging talent.

Max Winkler’s “Jungleland” is a throwback to the kind of character-driven, road movies that Hollywood hasn’t made much since the glory days of the 1970s moviemaking.
It’s the story of two drifter brothers who are so desperate to escape their dead-end lives that they accept an offer to ferry a young woman (Jessica Barden) across the country to a degenerate criminal. The film, which opens Friday, stars Jack O’Connell as Walter “Lion” Kaminsky, a bare-knuckle boxer, and Charlie Hunnam as Stanley Kaminsky, his corner-man and manager, who is better at plunging the family into debt than scoring big paydays.
On the eve of the film’s release, Winkler spoke to Variety about the movies that inspired “Jungleland,” why “King Arthur” convinced him to cast Hunnam as the down-and-out Stanley, and his go-for-broke effort to score the rights to a Bruce Springsteen song.
What drew you to this story?...

Back in 2018, when jazz fans heard that a previously unreleased John Coltrane album was set to come out, they immediately zeroed in on the date.
The fact that the tapes dated from 1963, right in the middle of the saxophonist’s most celebrated period, signaled that this was a major find. The same applies to Just Coolin’, a never-before-released album from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers that’s due out in April from Blue Note: Its recording date of March 1959, just a couple of months after the release of...

How did 13-year-old Beth Kane grow up to be off-kilter Alice, leader of Gotham’s Wonderland gang? The CW’s Batwoman will shed some light on that tragic turnabout in this Sunday’s episode, titled, fittingly, “Mine Is a Long and a Sad Tale.”
In the freshman drama’s fifth episode, Alice invites Kate out to a remote diner, to at long last delve into the details of the first days following the car accident that appeared to claim the lives of both Kate’s twin and their mother. But is Kate prepared to hear the harrowing tale? And will...

The CW’s Svp current Traci Blackwell has joined Bet Networks as Evp, Scripted Programming. She will lead development, casting and current of original scripted programming for the Bet linear network and the company’s new Svod service, Bet+. Based in Los Angeles, Blackwell will report to Bet Networks President Scott Mills.
This is a newly created position. Bet has opted for a senior executive dedicated to scripted original programming amid an expansion in the field fueled in part through partnerships with Tyler Perry, Will Packer and Lena Waithe, both on the linear network and the Svod service. The collaboration with Perry has been particularly prolific; Bet tonight is launching two new Tyler Perry scripted series, Sistas and The Oval.
“Traci brings an incredible breadth and depth of experience in scripted programming that will be invaluable for Bet Networks as we advance our catalog of scripted IP,” said Mills. “Bet is in a transformational moment,...

Nearly one decade after making viewers afraid to go in the water (without risking the loss of an appendage) in Piranha 3D, Alexandre Aja dove back into underwater horror this past summer with Crawl, a claustrophobic thriller that pits college swimmer Haley (Kaya Scodelario) and her estranged father (Barry Pepper) against ravenous alligators amid the chaos of a Category 5 hurricane.
Crawl is undoubtedly one of my favorite moviegoing experiences of 2019, and with the film out now on Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD from Paramount Home Entertainment, Daily Dead had the pleasure of speaking with Aja once again about the ambitious underwater filming for Crawl (which is explored in-depth in the Blu-ray's special features), the serendipity of getting to work with Sam Raimi, and how this water-centric filming experience compared to making Piranha 3D. With plenty of projects on his horizon, we also talked with Aja about his upcoming interactive haunted house...
