Inept black humor
Eminently representative of David Stanley's approach to porn, "Happily Never After" features relentless overacting by his cast to drive home his dumb in-jokes and fake-cleverness mocking the industry that feeds him: porn. Under the cover of delivering the requisite XXX content to Vivid Video customers, Stanley satirizes his profession in such an obvious manner that one suspects most viewers at the time (2003) turned on the mute button or merely fast-forwarded and watched only the sex scenes.
Sharon Kane and Randy Spears play ex-porn movie stars who after knowing each other for 20+ years decide to get married, with Randy bringing over his sons to a dinner with Kane and her daughters at which he'll pop the question. Movie is a vehicle for Vivid contract stars Dasha and Briana Banks, with Dasha cast as Sharon's house maid from Poland.
Every character, with the possible (intended sort of) exception of Dasha, is detestable, part of Stanley's black humor. The four kids all oppose the marriage, and Briana concocts a stupid scheme of the four of them having sex with each other to block the planned engagement of their parents by embarrassing them.
This story line, leading to a fateful conclusion at dinnertime, is merely an excuse for David to indulge two of his favorite fetishes. First and foremost is foot fetishism, which he shares with star Spears, and which is featured throughout the show in footsie moments, foot-jobs and two cum shots on stockinged feet along the way.
Second is the repeated references to porn, including harking back to Paul Thomas's classic Hyapatia Lee hit "The Masseuse" which co-starred Spears, Gregory Dark of "New Wave Hookers" fame, etc. As with the overacting, everything is presented in such an obvious, in-your-face way that groans rather than yocks are generated.
Casting is poor, with Eric Masterson and an untalented actor Mason Rivers way too old to play Randy's sons. A lengthy sex scene has Briana Banks trying endlessly to coax a cum shot from Rivers that leads to a jump-cut for the money shot onto her breasts (possibly achieved using a stunt cock in desperation). Coincidentally Stanley featured Rivers opposite Dasha in "1 Way Out" (2003) in which his cumshot was faked.
