La cinta se sustenta en tres pilares fundamentales: el romanticismo amoroso, la sanguinaria venganza teñida de humor negro y la expresión musical. Interesante resulta desde su impronta romántica porque Tim Burton supo tomar distancias de los convencionalismos, logrando un filme para nada acaramelado sino lleno de sinsabores que realzan el riesgo de que la propuesta no guste a todo los apasionados de los encantos amorosos. Y ello para mí tiene mucho valor. También resulta satisfactorio desde la cuota de hemoglobina que el filme desarrolla. Quizás el aspecto más destacado de los tres ejes argumentales, porque aparte de truculencia hay originalidad e ingenio al presentar lo siniestro, morboso y sanguinario. Si bien pareciera que la película es una venganza más, tiene suficiente carga anímica y singularidad idónea como para desplegar un relato atrapante por sus variantes. Lamentablemente regular me ha resultado en el aspecto estrictamente musical, donde ni las canciones ni los intérpretes tienen la solvencia necesaria para enganchar desde la armonía rítmica. Aunque no por ello dejo de destacar que los actores le han puesto mucha pasión a la expresión de la historia a través del canto, pero no me repercutió a la altura de otros musicales. Ni siquiera hay que mencionar que el diseño de arte, la fotografía y la estética de la imagen es soberbia. Como siempre nos tiene acostumbrado Tim Burton: paisajes góticos, sombría ambientación, vistoso vestuario y estrafalarios diseños visuales de los atormentados personajes.
