It's an odd documentary. It often praises him...yet often describes him in rather unflattering terms.
This is a very unusual documentary for two reason. First, "The American Experience" didn't normally focus on athletes and it's the only one about baseball. Second, although the man is often praised, there seemed to be LOTS of negatives said about Joe DiMaggio as well. Hearing his described as cheap, somewhat friendless, non- social, having a big ego and a bit ruthless when playing ball all sound like anything but a hero--which he IS in the show as well! Weird, that's for sure and it does make you wonder why he became such a beloved American icon.
Among the many topics covered is his famous 1941 hitting streak, his rather selfish involvement in WWII, his marriage and failed marriage (twice) and about what a nasty and isolated jerk he was! All in all, this is NOT a film for his fans, as it tends to paint him in less than glowing terms despite his talents on the baseball field. All in all, he was a miserable son of a...gun.
