- Judith: But you only worked three weeks out of the year.
- Van Van Dorn: That's all I need.
- Judith: The rest of the time you hunt, of fish, or swim or sleep, or heaven knows what.
- Van Van Dorn: Ain't it the truth?
- Van Van Dorn: There's the factory. Right down there on our side of the river. And across there is Sing Sing. From here you can't tell one from the other. You get inside, what's the difference? You work... they got ya.
- Biggs: [Thumbing through a pile of money] You know, until now I've always had to work for it, or steal it. This is the first time that I've ever been wakened up by a little man in a big hat fetching it to me in bundles.
- Biggs: This is the Orangeburg payroll.
- Skimmerhorn: In that case, we've got to give it back, because it might be marked bills.
- Van Van Dorn: You know, Henry Hudson sailed up the river about 300 years ago and he lost a ship in the Zee. They say the crew climbed up the tor to keep a lookout for the ship that never came. Some people think they're still around. They say sometimes on a dark night just before a storm you're likely to see them.
- Van Van Dorn: There's something my pappy used to say... There's nothing man builds but that in the end makes good ruins.
- Patsy: We've had a robbery and here's the money. Gotta explain it somehow.
- Biggs: I'd rather be under arrest than try to explain it.
- Patsy: Judge?
- Skimmerhorn: I'm gonna know everybody in that jail. I put 'em there.
