With the end of American Idol near, we've found ourselves taking a trip down memory lane more than once, getting a bit wistful about the long-running Fox series' early days. And in doing so, we've stumbled upon perhaps one of the strangest points in the franchise's early history—one we'd completely forgotten about. In 2003, after Kelly Clarkson had been crowned America's inaugural Idol, someone had the grand idea to gather the reigning Idols from 11 countries and pit them against one another in a one-off competition. We present to you: World Idol. If you thought the biggest indignity forced upon Kelly following her crowning was From Justin to Kelly, you were wrong. World...

Simon Cowell is reportedly planning to stage a World's Got Talent event in Mumbai in December.
Cowell is partnering with Colours TV in India for Got Talent World Stage Live, with reports suggesting that a formal announcement will come tomorrow (August 1).
Entrants from Britain's Got Talent have not been confirmed yet, but salsa dancing duo Paddy & Nico and magician Darcy Oake have been tipped as favourites.
The special will reportedly be hosted by Shah Rukh Khan, star of the Bollywood films Chak De! India and My Name Is Khan.
A host of other Bollywood stars are also scheduled to take part in Got Talent World Stage Live.
Cowell previously judged on Pop Idol's two-part holiday special World Idol in 2003, which saw Kurt Nilsen of Norway defeat Kelly Clarkson of the Us in a grand finale.
Syco TV has not yet officially confirmed that Got Talent World Stage Live is in the works.

A little less than two weeks after taking his bow on American Idol, I fear Simon Cowell has lost memory of a little thing called World Idol. Cowell’s rep confirmed today that the former Idol judge is in talks to put together a World’s Got Talent next year that would bring together 20 winners from across the globe for a mega-competition that all the other televised talent-based competitions will surely be jealous and afraid of.
But as you probably recall, the last time an international competition de force was attempted (2003-2004′s World Idol), it seemed less TV powerhouse than reality competition flatulence,...

Amongst all the MTV Movie Awards hoopla on Sunday, June 6, did you know there was another awards show happening? The 63rd annual British Academy of Film and Television Awards.
"American Idol," "Britain's Got Talent" and "X Factor" judge Simon Cowell (pictured left being cheeky with fiance Mezhgan Hussainy) was honored with a special award recognizing his development of new talent. Check out his acceptance speech below. And apparently Simon Cowell is not finished with merely conquering the U.K. and U.S.
According to London paper the Sun, Cowell wants to start taking contestants from all the "Got Talent" franchises from around the world and pitting them against each other in a global competition. The Sun cites a source close to the mogul saying, "This has been Simon's dream. It will be the biggest reality show the world's seen."
This is a British paper, so take it with a grain of salt.

Britain’s Got Talent judge Simon Cowell has revealed that he is planning to launch a worldwide search for stars, but added that the subsequent show will have no judging panel.
Speaking at last night’s BAFTA’s, where he won a special award for his contribution to the British Television industry, Cowell revealed his plans for World’s Got Talent and how he intends to ensure that it doesn’t go the same way as the ill fated 2003 show World Idol.
Simon said:
“We had a disaster attempting it once on Idol because we had 16 judges and everyone wanted to be me. The show would have to work without judges.
“The idea that Spelbound or Diversity would represent Britain in a global competition excites me. It’s like coming out of the Premiership and into the Champions League.”
Simon added that instead of judges, he, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan...

CBS' Thursday Jerry Bruckheimer lineup had a strong grip on Christmas night, while Fox's World Idol special did OK, coming in second in total viewers and adults 18-49 and winning the night in adults 18-34. About 6.5 million viewers tuned in, according to early Nielsen Media Research estimates, to see first American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson take on 10 other Idol winners from around the world and "Mr. Nasty" Simon Cowell insult the other 10 international judges on the panel. The two-hour special averaged a 2.7 rating/9 share among adults 18-49 and a 2.8/11 among adults 18-34.

TORONTO -- Hoping to repeat the success of its first Canadian Idol competition, Canadian broadcaster CTV Inc. said Tuesday that it will broadcast Canadian Idol 2 in mid-2004 as part of a deal with format producer FremantleMedia/19TV. Following the success in airing Fox's American Idol series on its primetime schedule, CTV in the summer aired a Canadian version that averaged about 3 million viewers per episode, a hit by Canadian audience standards. CTV said the format, host and judges of Canadian Idol 2 will be virtually the same as the first installment, with Toronto-based Insight Prods. once again producing the series. CTV president of programming Susanne Boyce announced the new deal with FremantleMedia from London, where she is attending the upcoming World Idol competition. Ryan Malcolm, the winner of the first Canadian Idol, released his first album Dec. 9 by BMG Canada.
