Actress Tara Spencer-Nairn auditioned for the role of Natalie that later went to Kristin Adams. She joked in an interview that "it must have been one of those tragic and embarrassing auditions." She admitted she never saw the movie because "I always feel kind of weird watching movies that I auditioned for and didn't get. I'm like, 'whatever, screw you!'" and laughed.
Don McKellar came up with the idea for the movie when he met a young Haley Joel Osment at an Oscars party and was amazed by his maturity.
