Beautiful Visit to the Culture and Traditions of the Population of the São Francisco River
claudio_carvalho4 September 2005
The photographer from Rio de Janeiro Henrique (Fábio Assunção) has been living in the four hundred years old city of Penedo, in Alagoas, for two years taking pictures of the São Francisco River for his book. His girlfriend Celeste (Carla Regina) decides to make an unexpected visit to him. When she arrives in Penedo, she is informed that he is traveling along the river. Celeste hires the oarsman Abel (Francisco Carvalho), a man that talks with his canoe Sidó, to take her to Henrique. In their journey, they are informed that the boat where Henrique was traveling sank, and he might have survived in a place called Rodeador. The group joins to Henrique's friends Olavo (Charles Paraventi) and Zé da Carranca (Aramis Andrade) and navigates down the river to the town of Saúde, in Sergipe, ending their quest in Bom Jesus da Lapa, in Bahia. Meanwhile, Celeste faces and discovers Brazilian culture and traditions unknown to her.

"Espelho d'Água - Uma Viagem no Rio São Francisco" is a beautiful visit to the culture and traditions of the population of the São Francisco River, unknown for most of the Brazilian people. The cinematography is wonderful and bright, showing parts of the 2,660 km length of this river. The mystic story is engaging and I believe any viewer, including foreigners, may like this view of a religious, humble and full of beliefs people living in the Twentieth-First Century. This movie was awarded in the following festivals: a) Recife Festival: Best Supporting Actor: Francisco Carvalho / Best Supporting Actress: Regina Dourado; b) Miami Festival: Best Cinematography / Best Direct Sound / Special Prize TAM: Best Fiction Movie; c) Margarida de Prata (Silver Daisy), from CNBB – Conferência Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil ("Nationl Conference of the Brazilian Bishops"). My vote is seven.
