Torchwood and Doctor Who fans have a lot to be excited about regarding next week’s Comic-Con 2009 in San Diego – and it just got even better for collectors. Underground Toys has just released images of their four exclusive new action figures, which will be available firstly at Comic-Con and then only at select online retailers following the event. If you’re an action figure collector like myself, you won’t want to miss these great new additions.
The first two selections are part of Character Options’ classic figure series. Both color and black and white editions will be available, keeping in the spirit of the original black-and-white television broadcast. Bill Maher is baaaack finally after a few weeks off the air. Maher is the main event of the HBO Friday night fight card, and always mixes it up with politicians, actors, writers, pundits and in-the-trenches journalists. "Real Time" continues its seventh season in prime time Friday, July 17 (10:00-11:00 p.m. Et/Pt), on HBO, with an instant replay at 11:00 p.m. following the live presentation. HBO's Bill Maher series continues to draw interesting guests who cut a wide swath of opinion and expertise. "Real Time with Bill Maher" continues its seventh season with host Maher, who does not claim allegiance to either the Democrats or the Gop, and routinely takes Americans to task for laziness in educating...

Whitevoid creates a sprawling, immersive data visualization for the airline's "brand academy."
Whitevoid, an interactive-design firm, recently unveiled a stunning immersive installation for Lufthansa's tourist center in Germany, the Lufthansa Brand Academy. It's impressive just to witness the sheer quantity of data that that installation gathers. In real-time, the 46-foot, 180-degree wraparound display shows all of Lufthansa's 16,000 flights, and exactly where they're located. An interface then allows visitors to filter based on time and location; they can also pan around the virtual space and zoom in all the way to an individual flight. The audio, by Monolake, is perhaps the best part. It's not live data, but rather a series of feedback loops that change sounds based on the virtual distance between the viewer and the flight (or flights) being watched:

"Real Time with Bill Maher" continued host Bill Maher's smack down on the Democrats, who he described as "the new Republicans." Maher lampoons the sacred cows of politics and popular culture weekly on his HBO series, and last week he suprised the both the left and the right with his lashing out against President Obama, who he urged to use some "audacity" per the president's campaign slogan promise in fighting against "corporate douchebags." Maher hosted his roundtable that included political strategist Paul Begala, reporter Katty Kay and humorist Joel Stein. Journalist Hooman Majd and a very nervous but charming columnist Meghan McCain were his interview guests. The show is posted below, including "New Rules" and the HBO after show:...

Organizing the vast sea of vapid narcissism data streaming across social networks like Twitter and Facebook is no small task--which is why so many developers are taking up the challenge. The latest is CrowdEye, created by two former Microsoft developers, which launches in beta later today. The launch of CrowdEye comes on the heels of Facebook's experiment with enhanced search capabilities and a fresh effort by Glam Media's Tinker topic tracker to better organize its own social search. All have the same goal: To make social networks more robust and useful by helping you find what's important while filtering out the noise.
Developed by Microsoft's former search engineering team leader Ken Moss and his wife Becca, CrowdEye scans through tweets, retweets and twitter links in real time, aggregating posts based on a keyword search and allowing you to categorize, chart and analyze that data in ways that a standard Twitter search can't.

Last night's "Real Time with Bill Maher" with the tighter, more focused panel was excellent for the additional substance and insight Bill's guests had to offer. Maher should book more moderate Republicans alongside educated and thoughtful celebrities/writers like Hill Harper, Arianna Huffington and Christopher Hitchens. Much like putting the guest list together for a perfect party, it's all in the mix of personalities. The panelists, Fmr. Ambassador John Bolton Fmr. Rep. Heather Wilson (R-nm), armed with their level of insiders knowledge and perspective made Bill a better moderator and challenged him to more robust debate, without the show devolving in to a cheap laughs free-for-all. More balance on his panel makes for a better show. Bill shines...

HBO's Friday night political and social chatter show starring host and moderator Bill Maher featured a smart panel and an interesting interview with Sri Lankan rapper M.I.A., who held her own despite Maher's pregnancy weight and Octomom references and constant interruptions about American's woeful geographical knowledge. Maher laid into President Obama, The British, "Superhero" worship in politics, liberals, the financial "sector" and Dick Cheney. Maher took a big swipe at Senate majority leader Harry Reid, calling him a "dusty old dumbass" who perhaps had seen too many Hollywood movies, and the Democrats "pussies" when discussing the Guantanamo detainee conundrum being debated in Washington. (This entire exchange can be found in Panel 2) Maher's panel included professor Simon Johnson,...

HBO owns Friday night for insightful political chatter that veers into topical entertaining satire, thanks to the efforts of Bill Maher and his producers who deliver a wide swath of personalities possessing expertise in journalism, the arts, politics and other endeavors. Maher's show does not please everybody, as it skews to the left often times thanks to a preponderance of guests who lean that way. Bill's personal views on diet, animal rights, avoiding marriage and children at all costs and the decriminalization of marijuana also color a great deal of the discussion. But if you appreciate robust exchange about issues that are current, it's a great watch. Maher's "new Rules" segment is a highlight as well. This Friday, May 22...

The comedian who hosts the network's signature daytime game show "The Price Is Right," has inked a two-year first-look production deal with CBS Television Studios (formerly CBS Paramount Network TV) for scripted and non-scripted programs.
Under the pact, Carey will shepherd projects through his CBS-based company International Mammoth TV.
Former Paramount TV executive Andrew Horne has joined Imt as senior vp and will oversee all development under Carey's deal.
In addition to exec producing, Carey is open to performing on shows his company produces. He already appears in CBS primetime as the host of "The Price is Right Million Dollar Spectaculars" specials.

Say what you will about the way that The Family Guy and American Dad handle their gay humor, but creator Seth MacFarlane (who also happens to have the most lucrative TV contract in the History Of The Universe right now) has got our backs and is not afraid to say so.
This weekend the foul-mouthed funnyman appeared on Bill Maher's Real Time panel, and when Maher pointed out that MacFarlane is a "big champion of gay rights", MacFarlane immediately agreed, noting, "I like a good *ss f*ck as much as the next guy," flirted with another straight panelmember and then got to the real story:
That's an issue where ... it's okay for the people who have made that leap to kind of yank the rest of the nation forward. Because while you have people who are deliberating as they're watching Dr. Phil, and trying to figure out, "Gee,...

Sega is shaping the future direction of Real Time Strategy (Rts) games with their latest release, Stormrise. Instead of the typical “I am God” overhead view of battle, familiar to this genre, the game combines a full 3D environment with a 3rd person point-of-view. The game focuses on making gamers feel like they’re on the frontline, while gathering resources and commanding troops. Stripped of the overhead view, you must rely solely on the line of sight of your units. Stormrise is one of the first Rts games where the excitement is not found in huge assaults across the battlefield, but in the actions of smaller units. The most riveting moments come in moving your infantry through buildings and scaffolding to infiltrate your enemy. This game reminds me a lot of an old PC title, Uprising, one of my favorite games. If you played it, then you would definitely have...

Angels & Demons Director Ron Howard appeared on Bill Maher's HBO talk show Real Time this past weekend, where he briefly revealed a couple of big budget feature films for which he turned down the director's chair. As if that wasn't interesting enough, his outspoken host had a thing or two to say about comic book movies.
"I've had a chance at some things that I knew would be successful," Howard said when asked if there were any films he'd been offered an opportunity to make, "but I also knew that I probably wouldn't do a very good job.
"I had a chance at Batman years ago," he added, "and Spider-Man and Harry Potter."
"Good for you," interrupted Maher. "Those are comic book movies, and they’re all alike."
"I hate it when someone says Catwoman was a piece of sh*t, but Spider-Man was genius," Maher went on. "It’s the same godd***** story.

I love Bill Maher's attitude and comedy and watch Real Time without fail. But I was totally stumped as to why he would devote a half-hour last week to an interview with Ron Howard. Especially on a special-edition show where the other half-hour was devoted to a one-on-one interview with Gore Vidal. How do they even equate? I mean, I sort of get it: Maher hurled brickbats, smashed icons and otherwise gave the finger to religion with his audaciously funny documentary, Religulous, last year. He has a constant stick up his ass about religion -- and Howard has just directed a sequel to The DaVinci Code, which caused consternation within the Catholic Church. The new film, Angels & Demons, is sure to ruffle Vatican feathers as well. But it's not as though Howard is an iconoclast himself; he just happens to be directing...

Everyone's (or no one's) favorite redesigned brands, Tropicana and Facebook, came up yet again at this weekend's Y Conference as Liz Danzico, chair of the new Interaction Design Mfa program at the School of Visual Arts, focused on the concept of "designing in real time." She thinks redesign recalls are about to get a lot more common as designers are more likely to launch alpha or beta versions of experiences and then monitor user behavior to get feedback. "How cool is it that this many people can say, 'I hate this?'" Danzico said about Facebook. "It's just a continuous loop of data for them to make it better." This kind of conversation is ideal for a company: "We get stuck in the design phase," she said. "And we should be focusing on the use."

If you do, you’ll like Religulous. Oh, depending on your beliefs, there’s a good chance you’ll be offended too. But if you can sit through ten minutes of the worst possible spokesperson standing up for your beliefs, be patient: a nutcase from another religion will be along right after to take his place.

Interesting, how some big-time crackpots are widely and immediately identified, ridiculed and scorned as just that - flaming crackpots.
