crap film
stevendavis4235 December 2003
Being a fan of Goodnight Sweetheart I was expecting a cool sexy thriller with good characters smooth music and funny script. Sadly this film offers none of these! It really is beyond bad! I agree with the reviewer on this site who says its the worst film he's ever seen. Shoreditch is definitely one to miss I think!

Truly, madly, deeply useless
Dereksdontrun5 September 2003
Little point going into detail as it is unlikely that Shoreditch will see the light of day. I guess it may surface on TV, by virtue of the fact that Shane "Eastenders" Richie is in it. A true embarrassment for all involved, there is little to redeem this mess. The plot, switching between present day and a 1939 jazz club, is pointless and ludicrous beyond belief. The script is truly terrible, especially the dialogue (did they say "f**k weed" in 1939 London?) and tonally it hasn't got a clue where it's at. Humour (or an attempt at it) in the 2001 scenes, contrasting with the supposed suspense thriller of 1939...

I could go on but I'm losing the will to live just thinking about this woeful movie. Spare a thought for Shane Richie - not only does he suck in the lead role but he also sank half a million quid into it, which is why he is now an indentured serf on Eastenders.

Mama mia... a cautionary tale to all movie investors. If you can't recognise a script like this as a total stinker then get out of the business!

Is it any wonder the British Film Industry is declining?
MsMovie26 January 2004
How in God's name did something this awful ever get made in the first place? How does writing this bad get sold? What was Shane Richie thinking? (He is an OK actor, but he's never going to be in the acting class of the greats and he should stick to lightweight stuff, like Eastenders, in which he is essentially himself.) - Come to think of it Shane was just the same in this movie too!

The worst thing about this film (if we ignore how bad the script and directing are) is the acting itself. I mean, there are some well known talents in this little movie who are acting like total hams, in fact, there is not one bit of good acting in this whole movie.

I truly wish I was not one of the few people who actually bothered to see this film, I would rather have stayed home and waxed my legs, or done something else equally painful but at least somewhat useful.

My advice to anyone thinking of investing in a British movie is, DON'T, if this is what we produce and think will make money, wait until you see a great script like The Full Monty come along, now that's class.

This movie is total dross - do not even waste 50p to rent it on video!

Want to see a good movie - see Lost In Translation, The Last Samurai, East is East, The Full Monty, Good Will Hunting, even Rocky - all with compelling scripts!

Strong contender for worst Brit film of the decade
lauragrant803 December 2003
A few reviews of 'Shoreditch' have called it a contender for the worst British movie of the decade so far, and after seeing it I'm inclined to agree. In the hands of a more skilled film-maker, this could have been a fascinating little mystery. As it is, it's a lumbering, confused and boring waste of time. I have to admit, I actually walked out of the cinema after a while, because I couldn't stand any more. I survived 2 hours of 'Gigli', but an hour of 'Shoreditch' was too much. That should give an idea what utter garbage this film is.

The story is totally uninvolving. It feels rushed, cobbled together. The characters are forgettable, the performances are pathetic. The actors look uncomfortable, and who can blame them? The script is full of some real howlers. The sets look embarassingly cheap. The film looks bland and flat, and there's no atmosphere.

As a result, 'Shoreditch' feels like an extended daytime TV soap. How anyone ever thought this trash would make its money back is beyond me.

two good reviews on here...
nathanjay10 January 2007
I haven't seen this film, but curiosity has gotten the better of me. I used to like the concept of "Goodnight Sweetheart", plus I wonder can this film be so bad with an overall score of about 4? It can't be as bad as Revelation. Maybe one of the Sundays tabloids can give it away on DVD?

Its interesting that if you click the names of the users who posted the two positive reviews on here ("this is a very watchable film" and "The performance of Shane Richie was excellent") it shows that "triciacooklin" and "geoffdeane" have not commented on any other films. Would that be because they were involved with this and wanted to give it a bit of a boost? Aw, bless.

The worst movie I've ever seen!!!
pj2000pj4 December 2003
Words fail me. If I could have given it a zero I would! The only other movie I've seen that comes close to it is Ben Elton's Maybe Baby. Some people enjoy watching movies because they're so awful, but I defy anyone to get any form of pleasure from this rubbish! Don't even rent the DVD (if it ever survives onto DVD!).

0 out of 10 for this pappy-show! What in the hell is that..?
smiley-3229 October 2005
OK! OK! I must admit, I'm writing this for a friend.. Just one of the 300 people who went to see this stinker. As far as he's concerned.. I was told that this the kind of film that Shane Ritchie should've put his money where his mouth is..

Although it was similar in the reins of Goodnight Sweetheart.. This one was totally diabolical..! The script was awful.. The characters like a hard man's version of the Jelly Babies.. The whole film was mostly set in the jazz room populated by Smarties..

After I was told about it.. I was saying, well what the hell was Malcolm Needs thinking..? For a movie that costs £6million to make.. I would've done the film for a £100K.. rather than blast so much money into it.

I think the biggest problem was trying to get an audience to see this film this pile of rubbish.. But it turned out that audience realised that this is not the kind of film they would spend maybe £5-£10 (I'm talking London cinema-wise) to go and see it.

I've seen better films in my time.. But really if this comes out on DVD. And if it does.. I wonder how many people are going to rent or buy..? For starters, if I got this free from let's say.. Cash Converters.. I'll definitely pass it over to the nearest charity shop. They can sell it for a good price of 1p. 0 out of 10! Totally diabolical!

Absolutely dreadful
allendavid504 December 2003
This pile of steaming cinematic waste is an insult to English cinema. We gave the world Long Good Friday, Get Carter, Kes, Italian Job, Trainspotting, Ratcatcher, Ealing and some of the most remarkable movies to ever grace the screen. This, on the other hand, seems like a few steps back into neanderthal territory. Utterly dire all round - an artistic, technical and (inevitably) commercial failure. AVOID!

Tragic
Ali_John_Catterall12 November 2009
In 1939, on the eve of the Second World War, jazz club owner Thomas Hinkman (Richie) conducts an ill-advised affair with club singer Butterfly (Richardson) - "Butterfly by name, scorpion by nature".

Sucked into a sordid world of gangsters, drugs and corrupt MPs, he plans his escape route from his wife and lover. Sixty years later, Hinkman's descendant Tom (Ross), his girlfriend Abigail (Tyler) and their buffoonish flatmate Chad (Bovell) uncover Hinkman's walled-up property - along with a dead body, setting the scene for a Chinatown-style mystery.

Tragic is the only word to describe this. If the 1930s dialogue is unbelievable (were expressions like "Chill out a little" really common currency in 1939?), the cast appear equally unconvinced throughout. "Oh Butterfly, I've fallen in love with you", says Richie's Hinkman, with all the conviction of a barman noting that the barrel needs changing.

Richardson's demeanour is less 'sultry' that simply drugged. Thank gawd then, for two saving graces: that Tyler is lovely to look at (for really, nothing and nobody else here is) and that it all ends so abruptly.

1930's and Modern Day Drama
triciacooklin1 December 2003
Set in the East End of London in the 1930's just before war breaks out, and present day. Shoreditch is written and directed by Malcolm Needs. Staring Joely Richardson as Butterfly and Shane Richie as Thomas Hickman. Shoreditch is a drama that explores family secrets, which are only revealed when in the modern day Tom Hickman played by Adam Ross inherits an office building in Shoreditch. In the basement he discovers a bricked up nightclub, which not only holds family secrets but also the skeletal remains of a mystery man. With his two best friends Tom sets out to discover who the mystery man is by unravelling the club's mysterious past. Set to jazz music sung by Jacqueline Dankworth (daughter of Cleo Laine and Johnny Dankworth), Dane Bowers, Lance Ellington, and Sir Elton John this is a very watchable film. Considering the miniscule budget it is quite remarkable that this film was completed. It took determination and team effort of all the crew and all the cast to complete this film.

Shoreditch - a film with potential
emartinez54 December 2003
I found Shoreditch to be a film with a great deal of potential, but it was lacking in a great many areas. The film had an interesting storyline, but didn't follow through with a dynamic script. The plot was slow and confusing at times, and I felt that the film lacked direction. I also found that there was not enough character development, especially of Shane Richie's and Joely Richardson's characters. On the other hand, however, the overall standard of acting was good, and the cinematography and music scores were impressive. I am glad that I went to see this film, and although I have a fair many criticisms to make about Shoreditch, I don't think it was that bad. One to re-make in the future perhaps!!!

Entertaining Quality British Film.
geoffdeane2 December 2003
I am glad I went to see this film. It has an unusual plot with two stories linking the owners of a 1939 London Jazz Club to the present day with a twist at the end. There is a superb sound track of popular classic jazz songs running throughout. The performances of Shane Richie and the stunning Joely Richardson were excellent.

Great British Movie
filmbuff197028 November 2003
Ignore the Critics, they think all British movies should star Hugh Grant. This is a great little film. Shane Ritchie is excellent in this movie. It made for a refreshing change for a movie that has something different to all the recent blockbuster bores. It's a shame the movie is not being shown in all cinemas.

In support of Shoreditch
honour-our-forces19 October 2011
I watched this movie at the premier in Leicester Square. And actually I found it quite enjoyable. The only really bad part was the wooden and boring character of Joely Richardson. It amazes me the idiotic people who write reviews. Slating a movie that someone has worked their hearts out on to produce. This movie is no-where near as bad and obscure as the movies being shown on Film 4 and the BBC at present. Now they are garbage. It is about time we in this country, started to fully support and appreciate, our own film industry. Instead of trying to be critics. And being above our station by saying, how wonderful, dark and intriguing a Spanish, Russian, Croatian, Indian movie is. When in fact most of them are not even as good as Coronation Street. Give Shoreditch a chance.
