- A guy is hit hard by a punch to the face (Blood is shown).
- Jim is punched in the groin during a boxing match.
- We see some intense and hard-hitting blows delivered during a boxing match where Jim is knocked to the canvas and has some blood on the side of his face. Later, Jim knocks his opponent to the canvas, bloodying his nose.
- During some intense blows, an x-ray version of the internal damage is shown (ex. ribs cracking.) Some graphic descriptions of how brain damage occurred that killed a fighter.
- Several boxing matches are shown, with corresponding violence of punches.
- The Hooverville scene is a little intense, beaten, vomiting - offscreen - and people being trodden by horses - we only see their bodies briefly

- Joe smokes cigars several times, Jimmy smokes one at least once, while a slew of minor and miscellaneous characters smoke cigarettes and cigars in many scenes during the film.

- During the climatic bout, we worry that Max may kill Jim in the ring (as he's done to two previous opponents). We see the terror his family is in as they listen to the fight on the radio.
