CNN anchor Kate Bolduan got an interesting new job in 2022 when she was named the anchor of “5 Things,” a quick-hit open-the-day summary of top stories that was made available for streaming audiences. Two years later, she appears poised to get it again.
Bolduan will lead a test run of “5 Things” starting Monday on CNN Max, the live-streamed news service available on Max, the streaming venue backed by corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery. The program’s reappearance after a long absence marks the latest chapter in a concept that many at the news outlet seem to love, but just can’t figure out how to transform into a sustainable video franchise. CNN already operates a podcast and newsletter tied to the format.

HBO’s venerable “Real Time with Bill Maher,” survived the strike and despite a late start last fall, it continues to run new episodes on a nearly weekly basis. And the answer is: Nope. “Real Time With Bill Maher” has taken the week off. Instead, HBO is airing a repeat of last week’s March 29 episode. But the break won’t be long — the show will be back on April 12.

The chances that “Curb Your Enthusiasm” will add to its impressive total of 51 Emmy nominations during its current 12th and final season – which concludes with the series finale this Sunday April 7 over HBO and Max – are beginning to look pretty, pretty good. Let’s quickly go to the odds: Larry David himself currently ranks fourth for Best Comedy Actor at 5/1, while the series itself sits in fifth place for Best Comedy Series at 17/2.
In other words, there are a last few opportunities for the kind of delicious indignity that fuels David’s cranky and despairing life view – at least in the Larry David version we see on “Curb.”
See In honor of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’: A look back at its stellar awards history
The truth is that “Curb” has come up winless thus far in all 10 of its nominations for top comedy series. That’s a record for a comedy.

“Everybody Loves Raymond” will not be getting a reboot, according to Ray Romano.
On “Real Time With Bill Maher,” Romano addressed the possibility of a reboot, saying, “As far as a reboot, well, it’s now out of the question because unfortunately the parents are gone: Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts.”
Boyle and Roberts portrayed Romano’s parents Frank and Marie Barone on the sitcom. Roberts died in 2016, while Boyle died in 2006, shortly after the show ended.
“They’re never as good,” Romano said of reboots. “We want to leave with our legacy with what it is.”
The news of no revival is a departure from other shows like “Night Court,” “Frasier” and “Roseanne,” which have all gotten their respective reboots in recent years.
Created by Philip Rosenthal, TV sitcom series “Everybody Loves Raymond” aired from 1996 to 2005. Romano starred as the Italian American Raymond “Ray” Barone, a Newsday sportswriter who lives with his wife,...

As someone old enough to remember when the prospect of seeing people hump each other on screen was generally considered to be more of a feature of the film-going experience than a bug, I grew bored of social media’s never-ending sex scene discourse long before 2023 began. We all know the reasons why movies aren’t as carnal as they used to be, just as we’re all familiar with the theories about why younger audiences who came of age on the internet might see that as a good thing (e.g. the widespread belief that social isolation and the emergent focus on sexual abuse have made desire seem tantamount to violence). These self-evident truths have been the subject of a million quote-RTs over the last several years, and they will continue to haunt our cursed “For You” tabs until the hellscape formally known as Twitter finally implodes from the...

The Writers Guild of America went on strike on May 2, and work on all television and film projects was stopped immediately by guild members. Production was able to continue on some projects that already had completed scripts, but since the nature of late-night talk shows requires timely jokes, they have all been off the air for exactly five months.
But, thanks to last week’s deal between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), all of the late-night shows will return to the air on Monday, Oct. 2 with brand new episodes. Though the SAG-AFTRA strike is still in effect, late night will return starting on Friday with a new episode of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher.” It’s a timeline that puts late night in an odd position: Which guests can appear on late night when the actors’ strike is still in progress?
Luckily, we have an answer to that question thanks to daytime television and SAG-AFTRA’s own rules.
Why can late night return during the SAG-AFTRA strike?
The state of late night is a little bit confusing, because several hosts have also done acting work and are part of SAG-AFTRA. For example, Jimmy Fallon starred in “Fever Pitch” and John Oliver starred in “Community,” as well as the live-action “Lion King.”

Because late-night shows fall under the Network Television Code, these striking performers can return to their jobs. Late night is officially part of what’s called...

Late-night is coming back and the guest lists are starting to be filled.
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon will return on Monday with guests including Matthew McConaughey and pop star John Mayer.
Fallon said that SAG-AFTRA member McConaughey will be promoting his new book Just Because, a children’s tome. Mayer recently took part in Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival, where the sometimes Dead & Company star played a cover of Grateful Dead’s “They Love Each Other.”

Elsewhere on NBC, Seth Meyers is taking over his entire Late Night show with A Closer Look. The political segment, which is usually 15-20 minutes will run for the entire show, which Sal Gentile, who writes the segment joked that afterwards he will be “euthanized”. There’s plenty to cover given that the late-night hosts have been off for around five months...

“Late Night With Seth Meyers” is breaking its own format in its first show back from the WGA strike. Instead of having any guests, next Monday’s episode will be an hour-long “Closer Look” segment.
This news comes in the wake of late night being allowed to return following the conclusion of the WGA strike. SAG-AFTRA remains on the picket lines, but on Tuesday, the deal between the WGA and the AMPTP was made public and striking writers were told they were allowed to return to work. A day later, the big five names in late night announced their return.
HBO’s “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” will be the first series of the five to return on Sunday. NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” as well as ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and CBS’ “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” will follow suit on Monday.

The official end of the Writers Guild strike on Wednesday brought a slew of news from the world of late-night television, which was the first to go off the air in May when the writers hit the picket lines.
They also will be the first genre of shows to return to regular episodes, beginning Friday with HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher, who tried to return during the strike but held off amid backlash that also reached the daytime talk shows who wanted to launch their seasons.
As it stands now, all the major networks’ late-night shows have set return dates. One that hasn’t is NBC’s Saturday Night Live, which is eyeing a mid-October return after it went dark because of the strike with three shows left in its regular season.

Though chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content Casey Bloys is “happy” that the WGA strike has come to an end and that “it’s past us,” the executive is still conscious of the precarious state of the industry at large.
“We are in a moment in the industry [where] there’s a lot changing… We’re kind of coming out of a bubble, I would say, or we’re still dealing with the fallout from that,” Bloys said during his panel at Code Conference on Wednesday. “It’s an uncertain time. It’s a scary time. There’s a lot changing, so it is not business as usual. I don’t think any of it, any aspect of the business, is business as usual. This includes labor issues.”
He also noted that some of the issues of the strike were “existential.”
