When I first heard about the show "Animal Precinct," I was pretty sure that it was going to be a mushy and unintentional comedy. A documentary reality series from Animal Planet, the show appeared to be a sort of spin-off of "Cops," only instead of having the Alphas of the constabulary pursuing the open, visible sores of the underworld, we'd get to see Aspca officers track down people who forgot to feed their pets.
Honestly, the potential for ridiculousness was simply off the charts. I imagined some variation of a Christopher Guest movie,with the earnest officers of the Aspca portrayed as a motley crew of the demoted and demoralized, people who couldn't make the grade as regular cops. Self-important and physically imperfect, they'd troll about the suburbs, imposing their thin authority upon those who committed the most innocuous or benign infraction.
Well, I was wrong.

Discovery Channel has hired Kevin Mohs as vp production and Wayne Sampson as director of development and production.
Mohs, formerly vp production at Animal Planet, will manage content and production of all cross-platform programs for the network. He reports to Gena McCarthy, senior vp production and development at Discovery.
While at Animal Planet, Mohs created specials like "River Monsters" and the long-running series "Animal Precinct."
Sampson, previously director original programming at Spike TV, will expand Discovery's West Coast development and production. He reports to Elli Hakami, vp development West Coast.
At Spike, Sampson oversaw production on such shows as "1000 Ways to Die" and "The Ultimate Fighter."
"Kevin and Wayne both bring an immense amount of skill and talent to Discovery," McCarthy said. "These additions underscore our focus on continuing our strong track record of attracting compelling and unique talent, new and provocative genres and distinctive, quality content to the network.

Animal Planet is losing its programming chief at year's end. Michael Cascio, executive vp and general manager of the Discovery Networks-owned channel, is stepping down after 2 1/2 years to pursue unspecified opportunities outside the company. "I've had a great run here," Cascio said. "I'm looking forward to the time ahead." Discovery president Billy Campbell will oversee the channel while a search for a replacement is conducted. In his time at Animal, Cascio has spearheaded original programming efforts, including The Pet Psychic and Animal Precinct. Before taking the reins at the channel, he was vp cable programming at NBC. Before that, he spent nine years at A&E, where he was instrumental in the success of its marquee series Biography.
