Shiny metal dinosaurs race across a barren landscape.

Looking at early CGI is like looking at early film when the pioneers were trying to figure out what to do. Just as film had its forebears in still photography and Magic Lanterns, so did CGI have its own, with film and animation. Would it become a way of supplementing live action, a means of reviving animation as computing costs dropped or would it find something entirely new to do?

First, though, it would have to find out what it could do. Douglas Trumbull had demonstrated that computers could be used to guide camera movements fifteen years earlier. Disney had used wire frame animation in the opening sequence of THE BLACK HOLE in 1979. This short effort, less than a minute in length, showed that CGI could portray lifelike movement.... at least for shiny metal dinosaurs.

Cool early CGI animation from the 80s

Warning: Spoilers
Well, considering this was made in 1985, the CGI used here was quite impressive, and it is still pretty cool looking, in my opinion.

I think this could have been the logo or visual presentation for a videogame company from the 90s. Or maybe something one would see included in a music video from the same era, preferably accompanied by Heavy Metal music. Either that, or as a bumper from MTV, back then when that channel was still worthwatching, perhaps included on Liquid Television.

Since this is basically a demo made as a way to test the existing technology, obviously there isn't any real plot here, but is still interesting to see the early developments of computer animation.

I personally think these first experiments were more visually creative than what is done nowadays. We have much better technology, but less imagination and less artistic sense.
