Sex & Nudity
-
- There is an implied sentimental adulterous love triangle. However, this is brief and it is also implied that nothing happens.
- The children incessantly use the word "maricón," a Spanish slur toward homosexual males. Though there are no homosexual male characters.
- Two young teenage characters kiss. Very family-friendly.
Violence & Gore
-
- A man shoots a gun repeatedly at an airplane. No results.
- Some soldiers force their way into a house to search it.
- A woman dies from a disease. Gentle.
Profanity
-
- Occasional. Including "co**" (a Spanish word variously translated, potentially as strong as f***). See also the note in "Sex & Nudity" on "maricón."
Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking
-
- A woman smokes, and talks with another woman who secretly smokes. The latter comments that in their town, the men, and she, smoke.
- The protagonist, a 12-year-old girl, tries smoking briefly (cigarette). During minute 42. With boys her age who smoke.
Frightening & Intense Scenes
Spoilers
Violence & Gore
- A boy is beaten up by civil guards (police) for his father's political affiliation. Nothing is shown except initial rough-housing, but the next day his friend asks him about the wounds on his face.
- A young character is accidentally shot and killed. (The bullet was intended for an adult soldier.)
Frightening & Intense Scenes
- The death of the main girl's mother, and the danger her father is in, combined with the tragic death of the young character and the overall Spanish Civil War-time setting make it a serious film, though delivered gently.
