We all know I love the Strokes.

But one thing I really hate about the Last Nite promo clip is the subliminal flashes of footage from the band's earlier Hard To Explain video. Unnecessary, distracting, and detracting from the overall experience of viewing this Roman Coppola-directed(?) music video. However, it does have a lot going for it. The Strokes perform the song live on set, rather than fall victim to the now-standard lip synch. Several other things I like: the 'Beatles-on-Sullivan'-eque camera-work; the pixelation of Julian's beer bottle; either Albert or Nick (I forget which) knocking over Fab's drum mike; Julian looking as if he hasn't washed in a month; and of course Nikolai doing lots of what he does best: standing still. Also, one slight difference in the song to the album version is that on the album, the instrumental lead-in actually has an extra guitar unaccounted for. Although, I think it may be ADT... anyway, who cares. It's not there in the video version, is the point I'm trying to make. Watch the picture and listen to the sound. My verdict? Although the biggest hit off either of The Strokes' first two albums, it is also one of their weakest.

Is is one of the most shocking video I have seen in my life! Music is very fantastic, imagines are also excellent, but moreover the Strokes are very very phenomenal, like Jules sings, like Albert, Nick, Niko and Fab play. Everyone must see this video!!!!!!!!!

The Strokes delivers a great song. Roman Coppola gives it a little stroke of vintage charm.

OK. First of, as a has-been 6 years huge fan of the Strokes, this video is probably the most simple and pure example of the band debut as a rock quintet giving back the Ny rock'n'roll scene a new breath. The song itself, "Last Nite", is one of the great hit of their first album, "Is This It", released in a post-9/11 era.

Coppola gives the boys a chance to look absolutely natural, filming them in a kind of live show, on some 70's style T.V. set. So forget about those fast paces, pop music videos on MTV. "Last Nite" ain't like this. Lots of camera movements, back and forth. Like on Albert entire guitar solo, where the camera start from a full shot of the band, to the fingers of Albert playing his last chords of his solo. Really cool sequence!

So here, you'll find the usual Strokish presence of cigarettes and beer. Like Julian sipping a beer, while he gently bash on Nikolai and Nick(where we see a beer on his amplifier). Or, in the second shot of the clip, we can see a smoking cigarette hanging on Albert guitars strings. In terms of trashing, Jules seems to like pitching microphone foot in the air, and the (maybe?) accidental micro accident with Fab and Albert, trying to fix it while he plays. That's just before the 2-sec pause of the song, a usual mark on their other songs, like "Hard to Explain". Talking of this indeed awesome song, I think Coppola could've avoid using small clips from this video, like the shots of supernova exploding in space, and the electronic Tic-Tac-To game. But in all, I think it's a nice use of faded colors and lights, like the pink floor and light bulbs shaped in 3 big TV sets. I think the photography suits the band style and music rhythm.

Long live The Strokes!!!(Watch "Hard to Explain" and "Someday" video if you liked this one, even though they're really different)

Rock N'Roll Big Bang of the 2000's

The sound of the future with a blast from the past! "The Strokes: Last Nite" is one of those moments that cannot be fully explained unless you lived back when they were one of the "rock's salvation" when the genre was about to "get extincted" but I'll try to pinpoint some facts and why I love this clip despite its simple settings.

I don't remember exactly the first time I've seen it, but I vividly remember the song playing in a car's commercial in the early 2000's and I just loved the music: loud, vibrant and catchy in an almost comic way. Cut to some time later, there was these guys playing it, in a calculated clumsy way with dropping mics or other objects, filmed in a nostalgic 1980's clip style. Something awesome was going on there. And next thing I know I'm hooked to the band.

From Roman Coppola's memorable choice for set designs - featured in other clips by The Strokes - to Julian Casablanca's remarkable presence or even the way Albert Hammond Jr. plays the guitar, everything works with its simplicity in giving us a band performing the song. What Coppola adds to the combo is a distinctive visual that echoes a few decades after the actual fact something insanely nostalgic and cool. Yes, let us consider that some (if not all) band members were born on the 1980's and they're big fans of the period, as evidenced in some of their other videos - which includes their greatest "Hard to Explain", from same album "Is this it".

Not just the video, gotta listen to the song too, one of the Rock n'Roll kicks into the 21st century, a explosion to the senses that still captures your heart and mind. The genre didn't get much better than this in the following years after "Last Nite", but at least The Strokes tried. 10/10

A retro and incredibly different and new video!! As in any of the Strokes' videos, music has the lead role

I never ever saw a similar video. The retro vibe is awesome and the look and attitude of the band are just incredible!! Each one of them has a unique sense of style, same with the colours and stage scene. It goes perfect with the song, and with the classic and modern look of the band. Julian's charm is delightful!! And Roman Coppola's job does it! as well as Reptilia, so different and it's all bout the music!! Maybe you can hear the song and love it, but watching the video makes you think in every aspect of the song, each instrument, voice, guitars, bass, drums... If that's what you were trying to do, you did a GREAT job!! I loved it!!

Uninspiring to say the least

Warning: Spoilers
These 3 minutes are the music video for The Strokes' "Last Nite". I have to say I am pretty baffled by the rating here and also by the other reviews. They speak of it as if it's one of the greatest songs and music videos of the new millennium. Not even close. It has a decent touch of retro attached to it, but other than that it is just a band singing on stage and the song isn't catchy at all either in my opinion. I can only imagine that the other people who reviewed this were no neutral observers or listeners and went into 100% fanboy mode. Nothing special to see here really. It's a truly boring and lackluster piece of music and filmmaking. Thumbs down.
