When Bobby Cannavale turned up midway through the run of Terence Winter's HBO gangster epic Boardwalk Empire, the most surprising thing was that they somehow hadn't worked together before, whether on earlier Boardwalk seasons or during Winter's long run as David Chase's top lieutenant on The Sopranos. The half-Italian, half-Cuban actor has been no stranger to crime stories in his career (including a role on NBC's would-be Sopranos drama Kingpin), but the Boardwalk role of animalistic sociopath Gyp Rosetti (for which he would win an Emmy) was his first time working with Winter, and also with Boardwalk executive producer Martin Scorsese. Now, all three men have teamed up with, of all people, Mick Jagger, for Vinyl, HBO's new Sunday drama, where Cannavale plays Richie Finestra, a '70s record company executive with a great ear and a nose too prone to having cocaine shoved up it. The two-hour...

Welcome to the second installment of our summer trip through "The Sopranos" season 1. When I revisited early seasons of "The Wire," as well as the whole run of "Deadwood," I did separate versions of each review for newcomers and veterans, but over time realized that the newcomers weren't commenting much, if at all, and that it therefore made sense to simply do one review. Any significant spoilers for episodes beyond the one being reviewed will be contained in a separate section at the end of the review; so long as you avoid that, and the comments, you should be fine. Thoughts on the second episode, "46 Long," coming up just as soon as I finish unscrewing my belly button... "But she's my mother. You're supposed to take care of your mother." -Tony Second episodes are hard. Almost every TV writer will tell you that. With your pilot, you get to set up the premise,...

While it's been two months since "Breaking Bad" said goodbye and Walter White's fate was sealed, that ending is still being talked about. In particular, creator/writer Vince Gilligan has been sharing his process, revealing the harsher finale they didn't use and the alternate ideas they kicked around before arriving on the final path they would take. And it speaks to how compelling these characters were that folks continue to wonder their fate, and in particular Aaron Paul's Jesse Pinkman, who seemingly drives away to hard earned freedom ... or does he? Gilligan was recently selected as Kingpin Of The Year for GQ, and he ruminated on what has become of Jesse after the credits rolled. "My personal feeling is that he got away. But the most likely thing, as negative as this sounds, is that they're going to find this kid's fingerprints all over this lab and they're going...

The Emmy Awards for 2010 had expected winners, some surprises and a notable gaffe in the In Memoriam segment of the series. Jewel's song was the backdrop for the In Memoriam, written for a lost friend. Major oversight for not adding David Mills, a writer and producer for 'The Wire' and 'Treme' who died earlier this year, to the list. Mills even had written "Kingpin" for NBC. The Twitter idea fell flat for Fallon, who otherwise shined and did a terrific job managing a wide variety of song and commentary. Happy for Temple Grandin, one of M&C's favorite TV film efforts last year. Hardest pill to swallow; seeing "The Closer' Kyra Sedgwick take the Best Actress...

The biggest news of the year so far in Hollywood was the sudden departure of Sam Raimi from the Spider-Man franchise earlier this week, which prompted Sony to drop the entire existing cast and reboot the franchise with an entirely new set of principles. The new version, which has already been scripted by James Vanderbilt, is expected to be another origins story, this one dark and gritty, which will take place in high school. My best guess: A dimly lit movie with Jay Baruchel as Peter Parker and a Fall Out Boy soundtrack.
Neither a director or talent has been officially attached to the project yet, though there are certainly quite a few names already being considered, including Michael Bay, Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer) and Gary Ross (Seabiscuit), though I'm partial to some of the suggestions that The Playlist offered, including especially Edgar Wright and Greg Mottola.
However, after careful consideration,...

The Day of the Dead, the Mexican holiday devoted to the deceased, is to serve as the setting for a horror project that Paramount Pictures and MTV Films have conjured up together. Diego Gutierrez, who pitched the project, will write the screenplay, to be produced by Alan Rich and Peter Rich through their Rich Prods., and MTV Films. MTV president Van Toffler and MTV Films execs David Gale and Susan Lewis will oversee the project. Gutierrez, repped by CAA, has written for Dawson's Creek, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Kingpin.

The major broadcast networks have made significant strides in hiring Latino talent over the past year but are virtually ignoring Asian Americans in primetime series, according to reports issued Monday by two advocacy groups. Delivering its fourth annual report card that grades networks on their efforts to promote diversity, the Los Angeles-based National Latino Media Council hailed the broadcasters -- especially ABC and Fox -- for increased hiring of Latinos both on-camera and off. "The overall grades for all four networks are very encouraging; we are finally seeing some progress," Esteban Torres, a retired congressman who chairs the council, said in a statement. The council -- which graded the networks on opportunities for minority actors, directors, writer-producers and executives as well as on program development, procurement and overall commitment to diversity -- singled out for praise such Latino-themed series as ABC's sitcom The George Lopez Show, NBC's narcotics drama Kingpin (a midseason show from 2002-03 that did not make the fall schedule) and Fox's comedy The Ortegas, which was recently delayed to midseason from a scheduled fall launch.

New Line Cinema is in negotiations with multiple-Emmy-nominated director Allen Coulter to helm its ghost-story thriller Alone. Based on a script from Kevin Taft, Alone centers on an agoraphobic high school student who learns that her home is haunted and must either overcome her phobia or die. The film is being produced by New Line-based Phantom Four Films, which is run by Blade 2 scribe David S. Goyer. It is being produced by Goyer and Phantom's Pascale Faubert. Coulter, best known for his work on HBO's The Sopranos and Sex and the City, most recently directed NBC's Kingpin. He is repped by Broder Webb Chervin Silbermann.
