Tough but Amazing Footage
Panoramic View of Tremont Hotel (1900)
On September 8th, 1900, the city of Galveston was hit by a hurricane and tidal wave, which would end up costing more than 2500 lives. With winds of up to 135mph, many considered this one of the deadliest storms of its time and the Edison studio sent cameras down there to capture some of the aftermath. I'm sure many would see this as some sort of exploitation as there's no question the studio would have made a lot of money but today it's interesting to see this footage simply from a historical point of view.
This here is one of the seven films from Edison that are available for viewing at the Library of Congress site. The footage of the Galveston disaster are quite alarming when viewed today but there seems to be some "artistic" nature in this one. The thing runs about 45-seconds and is a quite pan of the damage done to the Tremont Hotel but at the half-way point we see some men standing on some of the damage of posing for the camera. As the camera passes them we then go back to the damage including one building that is still smoking from the damage. Fans of history will certainly want to see this footage but it's also interesting because we get to see some old designs on some of the buildings as well as some advertising. You'll also notice how many of the buildings simply came down from the wind damage and all the destruction on the ground.
