TBS has added another original comedy series to its slate, picking up "Ground Floor" starring Skylar Astin of "Pitch Perfect."
The upstairs-downstairs romantic comedy also stars Briga Heelan ("Cougar Town") and John C. McGinley ("Scrubs"). Greg Malins ("How I Met Your Mother," "Friends") and Bill Lawrence ("Cougar Town," "Scrubs") created the series and will executive produce it with Jeff Ingold. The 10-episode first season is scheduled to premiere in 2014.
Astin plays a young banker who discovers the woman he just had a one-night stand with (Heelan) is part of the maintenance crew in the building where he works. The two try to continue their budding relationship while working around their skeptical colleagues.
McGinley plays Astin's boss. The "Ground Floor" cast also includes Astin's "Pitch Perfect" co-star Alexis Knapp, Rory Scovel, James Earl ("Glee") and Rene Gube.
"Ground Floor" is the third new comedy from Lawrence's company, Doozer, to get the green light for next season.

Bill Lawrence‘s best week ever continues: TBS has given a series order to the Cougar Town co-creator’s new workplace comedy Ground Floor.
From Lawrence and Friends Ep Greg Malins, Ground Floor is a multi-camera sitcom that centers on Brody, a 25-year-old alpha male (played by Pitch Perfect‘s Skylar Astin) who, upon meeting his company’s support staff, realizes he’s not nearly as happy as he thought he was.
Cougar alumna Briga Heelan and Scrubs vet John C. McGinley co-star as the building’s maintenance manager romancing Brody and his cranky boss, respectively.

Exclusive: The week keeps getting better for Bill Lawrence. After getting a series pickup at Fox for Surviving Jack on Wednesday and at NBC for Undateable earlier this morning, he also just received a series order for comedy pilot Ground Floor at TBS, which recently renewed his Cougar Town. Ground Floor, which the Scrubs and Cougar Town creator wrote with former Friends and How I Met Your Mother executive producer Greg Malins, is a workplace comedy with a romantic twist that stars Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect), Briga Heelan (Cougar Town) and John C. McGinley (Scrubs). Ground Floor, which has received a 10-episode order for a 2014 launch, is being produced by Lawrence’s Doozer in association with Warner Horizon TV, with Lawrence and Jeff Ingold serving as executive producers. This marks a second series pickup for Heelan today, who also has a supporting role on Undateable. She is in first position on Ground Floor but,...

CBS just made what are expected to be the final comedy pilot pickups this season, greenlighting three projects. Two of them are multi-camera – one from Friends alum Greg Malins toplined by Rules Of Engagement star Patrick Warburton, which will likely get Rules fans alarmed; and one from former Scrubs executive producer Tad Quill originally developed three seasons ago. The third order went to a single-camera adaptation of an Israeli format by Smash co-executive producers Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky. Overall, CBS has ordered 12 comedy pilots this season – six multi-camera and six single-camera. Malins’ script, titled Jacked Up, clinched the pickup after Warburton recently signed on to play the lead and the project, originally developed by Sony TV, became a co-production with CBS TV Studios. Rules co-producer Happy Madison also has come on board. Warburton’s casting is certain to raise questions about the future of Rules Of Engagement, which has...

In a competitive situation, ABC has landed Tribes, a single-camera comedy from veteran comedy showrunner Greg Malins, Sony Pictures TV and Jamie Tarses’ studio-based Fanfare. Tribes, which has received a script commitment plus penalty, is based on hit Israeli comedy series Your Family Or Mine? from Keshet, the leading Israeli media company whose Prisoners Of War format was adapted into Showtime’s Emmy-winning drama Homeland. Written by Friends and How I Met Your Mother alum Malins, Tribes centers on Oliver and Kelli who are living proof of the adage “When you marry someone, you don’t just marry them, you marry their whole family.” It is a family comedy with an unusual structure — each episode focuses on a different side of the family: one week featuring the couple dealing with Kelli’s family, the next spent with Oliver’s. Your Family Or Mine?, created by Rubi Duanias, Yaniv Polishuk and produced by Teddy Prods.

Exclusive: In a competitive situation, veteran comedy showrunner Greg Malins has signed a rich overall deal with Sony Pictures TV. I hear the two-year pact does not call for Malins to join an existing series, focusing instead on development. Former Friends executive producer Malins spent the last two years under an overall deal at Warner Bros TV, the studio that produced Friends. He most recently co-created and executive produced with Greg Berlanti an untitled comedy pilot for CBS which was in serious contention but missed the cut. He also served as a consulting producer on Wbtv’s breakout CBS comedy series 2 Broke Girls. Before that, he was executive producer/co-showrunner on Wbtv’s comedy series Better With You. The 2011-12 TV season doesn't start for another couple of weeks, but pilot deals for the following season are already being cut.
The latest one involves two veteran producers -- Bill Lawrence ("Cougar Town," "Scrubs," "Spin City") and Greg Malins ("Better With You," "How I Met Your Mother," "Friends") -- teaming up for a comedy at CBS. The network has committed to producing a pilot, Deadline reports.
As for what CBS will get, we don't know. Malins and Lawrence are saying only that it's a multi-camera workplace comedy. They'll co-write the script and executive produce with Jeff Ingold, the head of Lawrence's production company, Doozer.
It's the first pilot deal for Lawrence since he set up shop at Warner Bros. TV after a long stint at ABC Studios. Malins is also based at WB.

The jury's still out on the future of some ABC series (we're looking at you, FlashForward and V), but the network is already hard at work on a contingency plan: It's developing 11 new dramas for fall, including fresh projects from uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Grey's Anatomy honcho Shonda Rhimes. Sarah Chalke -- or Becky #2 (and in my opinion, the superior Becky -- will be returning to television next fall with a new sitcom on ABC. Chalke -- who has been in a few episodes of "Scrubs two-point-suck" this season, will star in "Freshmen," which comes from "How I Met Your Mother" exec producers Greg Malins and Arianna Huffington (I had no idea she produced "Himym").
That's the good news. Irony of the week: NBC, which just very publicly parted ways with "Tonight Show" host Conan O'Brien, is back in business with him via his production company.

When I read about Freshmen, I thought, This is so perfectly ridiculous and so perfectly perfect for the inanity that is the American sitcom, it’s shocking that no one has thought of it before. From Variety: Sitcom scribe Greg Malins ("Friends") has partnered with Huffington Post maven Arianna Huffington to develop a sitcom for ABC set in the world of politics. "Freshmen" revolves around a group of three newly elected members of Congress -- two men and one woman -- who wind up sharing an apartment in Washington.

ABC has a D.C.-set sitcom in the works from Friends and How I Met Your Mother alum Greg Malins and, er, Arianna Huffington. Freshmen will follow three newbie representatives -- two men and a woman -- who share a house. (And more! I'm guessing.) Malins told Variety that he "always knew wanted to do a show" in DC, and that "once discovered that members of Congress often live together," he knew he was set. He might have "discovered" this one of the nine billion times it's been written about in the New York Times alone, all of which mention its sitcommy potential. But okay. Freshmen is the latest in a string of politically-oriented shows in development: Earlier this summer, Body Politic, The CW's would-be D.C. series, didn't get past the pilot stage, but CBS's House Rules (starring Anna Chlumsky) is still in the works. You read it right folks, one of most influential women in media and co-founder of the liberal news website The Huffington Post, Arianna Huffington, has an idea for a sitcom, and ABC's buying it! ABC has purchased the rights to a multicamera sitcom idea of Huffington's and they're serious enough about it to bring in Friends and How I Met Your Mother Executive Producer Greg Malins to develop the project.
While most of us wouldn't consider the world of politics to be such a laughing matter, Malins disagrees. The show will be about three new members to the House of Representatives who share an apartment in the D.C. area. Apparently this is a common thing for new members of congress to do, though I wouldn't expect the living arrangements to be co-ed in real life. You see, in the new sitcom the three new members consist of two men and one woman.

When I first read the headline about Arianna Huffington getting into the TV comedy business, I had visions of her as Maude or something equally as bizarre.
Fortunately, it was just my skewed sense of humor at work, because Arianna Huffington, the political talking head and co-creator of The Huffington Post, is not starring in a sitcom. "How I Met Your Mother" executive producer Greg Malins has teamed with best-selling mystery novelist Harlan Coben for an hourlong series project.
The project, about a larger-than-life former private eye who teaches a college criminology class, was sold at the first place it was pitched, Fox, where it landed a script commitment with a penalty attached.
The untitled series, described as a drama with humor, hails from 20th Century Fox TV, where veteran comedy writer-producer Malins has an overall deal.
Coben, author of 18 novels in the mystery and thriller genres who lives in his native New Jersey, had been thinking about venturing into television. He had an idea to center a crime drama on a character with a frontal-lobe injury that suppresses his inhibitions.
Meanwhile, across the country in Hollywood, Malins was moving from one successful comedy series to another, doing exec producer stints on "Friends," "Will & Grace" and "Mother.
