nicely done, but.....
davidm-1423 January 2005
excellent, for a pilot. the characters are as fleshed out as they can be in 50 or so minutes, while still having time to explain the concept for the tunnel itself, which looks great. i found myself looking for lee meriwether or james darren in the background someplace. this is a superior reworking of the original 60's "time tunnel", except the characters return after completing each mission. the concept, a fix-the-errors-in-time-that-not-everyone-remembers scenario is somewhat more interesting than the original guys-bouncing-around-aimlessly plots that were used originally. i guess i can see why this probably wasn't picked up as a series. it would have been too closely compared to "stargate", which was a ripoff of sorts of the original. i still wish someone would start a network that shows nothing but unaired pilots. some of them are fascinating.

now available on the Vol 2 DVD set!
IMDB-795025 June 2006
I had heard about this and thought "another bland update, no one will watch it, it'll stink." How wrong I was, this showed solid promise, with Tony being updated to a female lead named Toni, it was one pleasant surprise after another.

They kept key features like the long tunnel itself, while changing a few items such as the new "time storm" and the fact that only the staff of the tunnel experiment knew the world had changed.

This big thing that was missing that as a fan I would have liked would have been references to "project tic toc" but well acted, well thought out, and it would have been a fine continuation to the Time Tunnel family.

Reasonable Attempt to Revive a Cult Series
claudio_carvalho15 February 2010
In 2006, an experiment of the Department of Energy in hot fusion to produce energy releases a storm in time along 240 minutes, changing history. Only the personnel in the core of the laboratory know the true story and now they need to fix points in the history that have been punctually changed. The bureaucrat and former Marine Doug Phillips (David Conrad) is a family man that is recruited by his friend Flynn (Kavan Smith) to join an expedition to 1944 due to his great knowledge of the Battle of Hürtgen Forest in Germany. The team formed by Doug, Flynn, Toni Newman (Andrea Roth), J.D. (Tawny Cypress) and Wix (Bob Kiherr) is assigned to find a monk from 1546 that has been accidentally transported to the spot and is the carrier of Black Plague.

"The Time Tunnel – Unaired Pilot 2002" is a reasonable attempt to revive the cult series from the 60's. The concept is a sort of Stargate and is not bad; however there is too much information in this pilot that is darker than the original show and the characters are not charismatic as the original time traveler scientists are. This pilot id part of the Extras in the second box of "The Time Tunnel". My vote is six.

A Worthy Successor
richardperez7 June 2006
Despite the negative review listed on this site, I found this pilot (only 60 minutes, not 120) to be interesting and worthy of more exploration. Despite its similarity to STARGATE, the premise is workable and deserves another shot. Perhaps Sci-Fi can take this pilot and build on it. I suggest a miniseries that would delve more into the creation of the Tunnel, the Belsky character, and the team. Making Newman a woman was a nice touch. Ending was a bit confusing, but could be expanded and explained if the concept were given more than an hour to play out. If a series were to result, it might be interesting to bring in a weekly 'guest specialist' who travels through time with the team to correct errors in the timeline. Fox's loss could be Sci-Fi's gain.

Time Tunnel 2002
bd04830 March 2006
I would not call this an update. It was new. The names of the two lead characters should not have been recycled and they could have called it Time Tube or something. Superior to the original, for most episodes maybe but it lacked the thrill of that first Time Tunnel show on the Titanic. Better than Star Gate, sure. The new Toni Newman - wow, but I think calling it an update is what killed it for fans of the old show.

The characters were pretty good. Even the relationships seemed to click pretty good.

All in all a fun ride but I'm not sure I will watch it twice.

Watch it if you can find it. It is for sale here and there on the Internet but the only copy available is from a VHS master.

Not really all that good.
Tyypo14 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Fun, but not particularly good. Even so, I would have enjoyed a few more episodes to see if it would pan out at all. A big nit is this: They allegedly needed Doug Phillips for his expertise of a WWII battle. Problem is, he remembers it not as it was supposed to happen, so how much of an asset is he? He doesn't know how it's supposed to go. And given that, he should have been aware of the effect of the plague, since he is part of the altered timeline. Not quite sure why he still has a wife and two kids, but perhaps that would have been explained later.

Best part was the laughs I got from the Hogan's Heroes references.

A very good Pilot that deserves more than being shelved!
videoking30 April 2004
By some miracle I have managed to obtain a copy of this film. While it is rough around the edges, as most pilots are, it has alot of potential. With additional character development and some good stories written by strong writers this pilot could have evolved into a very good series had it been given the chance. While this film bears little resemblence to the Irwin Allen series of the 60s, other that the brief hint of the original theme at the beginning, this contemporary version is well worth a look to scifi and time travel fans. I enjoyed it very much and it's a nice addition to my video archives.

Decent Pilot!! But NOT!! Superior!!
HawksRevenge30 October 2009
This is a decent 60 minute Pilot that see's Doug Phillips back and Toni Newman is a woman instead of a man as in the original. This pilot seems to lay everything out, but really adds nothing to the original premise. The time tunnel here is very underwhelming(The original took up an entire sound stage)The characters from the original such as Raymond Swain, Dr Ann McGregor, and General Heywood Kirk are all missing here.

The reason for the time travel is to correct 240 anomalies caused by a mistake and supposedly every episode would solve an anomaly.

This show as not picked up because it seemed too much like Stargate SG-1 and was obviously ripping it off in more ways than one!!

The Time Tunnel 2002 Pilot - fantastic

The Time Tunnel 2002 Pilot can be found on DVD #4 of the the second season of the original Time Tunnel. This DVD is available from Netflix.com.

Remembering The Time Tunnel from my youth I discovered to my great joy that Netflix.com had them for rent. It was a great experience watching the entire series again. I was 4-years-old the first time I saw it. The series made such an impression on me that I remembered it 40 years later.

On the last DVD, DVD #4 of season 2 of the original series, I was intrigued by the 2002 pilot for a new Time Tunnel Series. I had never even heard of a pilot for the Time Tunnel coming back. Intrigued I watched it.

After watching the 2002 Time Tunnel Pilot I was so impressed that I watched it three more times. This pilot was very well done and I wish that the finance and marketing people had realized what a new huge potential hit they had on their hands.

This new Time Tunnel pilot at first glance is a darker version. But after watching it several times it really is not. For me it was an amazing thrill to see an updated Time Tunnel. This new Time Tunnel series has so much potential that I cannot encourage the TV industry enough to make a seven year series run of it.

Since Star Trek is no longer running, TV is devoid of good science fiction entertainment. Smallville series excluded.

I've stopped getting cable because there is just no good science fiction shows on TV.

Instead I've turned to Netflix to satisfy my demand for the great science fiction series of my youth. They include The Time Tunnel (1966), Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1966-1968), Land of the Giants (1968-1969), and The Invaders.

I cannot urge the television industry enough to bring back these Irwin TV series in an updated modern form with modern special effects.

I absolutely loved the 2002 pilot for The Time Tunnel and I would definitely support a 7 year series run of it sold on DVD/Blue Ray.

The same is true for Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of the Giants, and the Invaders. I would definitely support a 7 year series sold on DVD/Blue Ray.

Why 7-years? This was a standard run for a Star Trek series. It takes time to build an audience.

Good, but not "The Time Tunnel"...
mooncity19 June 2006
This 2002 abortive attempt to revive "The Time Tunnel" plays much like a Sci-Fi Channel movie-of-the-week. It has nothing to do with the classic TV series, other than lifting a few character names and a brief "sampling" of the original theme. Rather, it comes out like a bad copy of "Stargate". For the most part poorly and cheaply made, it is just as well the pilot was unsuccessful. However, there are some very interesting ideas going on.

In this one, scientists accidentally create a "time tunnel" when trying to make "hot fusion". Instead, they cause a storm in the time stream, and it takes them four hours (240 minutes) to lock down one end of it. The other end sweeps through time. After the "two-forty", random changes have been made to history, and the scientists in the fusion complex are the only ones left who know what the correct history of the world is supposed to be. Now they must send teams back in time via the "time tunnel" and try to correct the errors. Teams (a la "Stargate"), can go back in time, but are limited to random time limits in which they can stay there (a la "Sliders"). Unlike the classic series, the teams can return to the present whenever they wish by activating a small laptop-type device.

The World War 2 battle stuff is really pretty good. It plays well for the most part. Things get stupid when newly-recruited team member Doug Phillips meets his grandfather in the trenches and they have a heart-to heart talk. Further lapses in logic occur when the team consists of two women dressed as GIs, one of whom is black (units were not integrated at this point in WW2, let alone allow for women in combat). And then there's the whole element of mission control being able to see, hear, talk with, and translate languages for the travelers via a magic computer chip injected into them.

Interesting to see once, but not if you're expecting a classic "Time Tunnel" update. The music is incredibly annoying, and the CGI very weak (it looks more "early '90s" quality than 2002).

Available as an extra on "The Time Tunnel, Vol. 2" US DVD set.

Shame on the networks for not picking this one up
jon_r_h31 October 2005
After reading the comments here on IMDb, I decided to track this pilot down. Hurray for file sharing!. The editing, direction and pacing of the pilot make SG1 look rather lethargic. The characterizations are really quite well developed for a pilot show. This really hits the ground running and doesn't let up until the end. The battle scene is really impressive for a TV show, the burning plane is a nice touch. There are a couple of minor things that could have been handled better, but it all flies by at such a pace that you really don't have time(excuse the pun) to dwell on it. Overall, this is one hell of a ride and a superior update to the 60's original. Kudos to the production company. I'm baffled as to why this wasn't picked up.

Grave dissapointment
Steve13130 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
After reading some previous accolades of this show, I went looking for it and was able to watch it online. I was thoroughly disappointed. The only thing this has in common with the 1960's TV series is the name it took from it as well as the names of the two lead characters, but it ends there. Even Tony Newman from the original is now Toni Newman a female, and Doug Phillips superior in the military, rather than a civilian colleague. In the original TV show the Time Tunnel was built on purpose and was a top-secret government project into time travel. Not so in this incarnation. Here the Time Tunnel is created accidentally. An experiment of the Department of Energy in hot fusion to produce clean energy creates a time storm. A sort of time warp. Only the personnel in the Department of energy laboratory know the true story and now they need to fix points in the history that have been altered, changing the current timeline. They now must go back in a limited amount of time and correct these changes. The series comes off more as a combination of Star Gate SG1 and Quantum Leap, than the 1960's Time Tunnel series. This is not a reboot by any means except for the purloined title and appropriation of a couple of character names. As a huge fam of the original series, I came here expecting the old show with updated computers, but this is not that. This is a different show entirely and should change its title and distance itself from the original. I would still love to see a reboot made based 100% off the original TV show. I would not watch this version again.

Another trip down the infinite corridors of time
powersroc30 December 2004
This was a fascinating & superior updating of the 1966 Irwin Allen series of the same name.Unlike that(and all of Allen's sf series)show, this is an intriguing & well thought-out premise. While attempting to create a clean, renewable,& abundant energy source, the Dept.of Energy inadvertently rips open a time vortex into past ages.A timestorm then ripples throughout these distant eras which in turn causes anomalies that disrupt our present. The TT complex is shielded from these alterations & realize how history has changed. They have plotted 240 anomalies which need to dealt with,so a team of experts are assembled in order to journey back in time in order to correct the errors caused by the anomalies,& then are retrieved back to the present. This would have been a wonderful series had it been picked up.In its premise it answers the problem inherent in all time travel scenarios:the past cannot be meddled with,no matter how benevolent the intentions are, because it may produce harmful ramifications all the way into the present. But here the time-team must restore the past to what we know it should be,their missions are to make things right. While this premise is hardly original & has been used by other TV series such as Voyagers & Quantum Leap,it works. The cast was likable & you cared about them. The fx were terrific. What a shame we won't be watching them return to the past to set things right with those other pesky 239 anomalies that are left.

Beyond belief that this wasn't commissioned as a series
Big S-228 September 2004
Warning: Spoilers
**MINOR SPOILERS**

I finally managed to get hold of this movie and watched it last night.

When I'd finished, I just could not believe that the networks failed to pick this up and commission a series.

But then again, considering all the sub-standard, mindless s**t that not only gets commissioned but keeps returning season after season ad nauseum - thereby speaking volumes about the collective lack of taste of TV execs and great swathes of the viewing masses at large - maybe it's not such a shock that this excellent remake (perhaps "reimagining" would be a better description) of the classic '60s show was shelved. Some things never change even after 4 decades (case in point: the original "Time Tunnel" was axed after a 30-episode single season, while the camp, puerile drivel that was "Lost In Space" ran to over 80 episodes across 3 seasons). These people wouldn't recognise quality television if it came up behind them and bit them in the backside.

But rant over! Back to the film itself. In the present day (2002), a secret offshoot of the U.S. Department of Energy has built an experimental Time Tunnel, but their meddling with time has created a "time storm" that's somehow rippled across history and caused subtle changes to the present (for example the U.S. now only has 49 states, and the New York Yankees baseball team have become the Boston Yankees). Only the team in the Time Tunnel complex have somehow been shielded from these changes, so only they can remember how things used to / "should" be. To prevent the changes becoming more serious, a team is dispatched back to the Battle of the Huertgen Forest on the border between Germany and Belgium in late 1944 to try and put things right. Disguised as a team of American GIs from that period, their mission is to find a man from the sixteenth century that the time storm has somehow picked up and dumped in 1944 (although exactly how and why this happened is never really explained), as it is believed that his displacement in time is somehow the catalyst for the unwanted changes to history.

I thought that this whole film was very nicely done. There are some cool state-of-the-art special effects and the Time Tunnel itself looks pretty awesome. The 1944 battlefield backdrop to the action, along with the uniforms of the German and U.S. troops, are also very realistic, and the combat scenes looked like something straight out of "Band Of Brothers" or "Saving Private Ryan": Very impressively crafted indeed.

There are one or two nice tributes to the original Time Tunnel series also: One of the central characters is again called Doug Phillips - although perhaps in a nod to 21st century political correctness, the original series' Tony Newman has now become "Toni Newman", one of two no-nonsense female members of the time-travel team. When Doug is initially brought into the complex, it's explained that the team would be "going into freefall" down into the main complex in some futuristic elevator (exactly as happened in the pilot of the original 1960s series) and the idea of the Time Tunnel accidentally lifting a person out of one past era and dumping him in another to cause mayhem there came straight from the original series episode "The Death Merchant" - then it was Machiavelli, this time round a young Medieval monk.

One way in which this version of "Time Tunnel" differs though is that while in the original series it was explained that history only happens once and cannot be altered - thereby essentially rendering the time travellers mere spectators to historic events - this time around we're told that history is fluid and CAN be changed, so the time travellers need to take great care not to upset the temporal applecart - definite shades of "Timecop" here. Also, while the original 1960s time travellers were lost in the temporal vortex and could only be bounced around from one era to another by the boffins back in the lab, here the team at the complex can bring the time travellers back with no problem.

The version of the film that I watched clocked in at 52 minutes. But according to this page on IMDb, it's 120 minutes long. This makes me wonder whether there are in fact two versions floating around out there??

But whether it's 52 minutes or 120 minutes - I would strongly recommend that anyone who enjoys a good time travel story or is a fan of the original "Time Tunnel" series should pull out all the stops to try and get hold of this film. It really is a must-see. And it's nothing short of a crime against the sci-fi viewing public that this excellent pilot was never followed up and made into a full-blown series.

Excellent update of a classic series
thelastguardian8 June 2006
I couldn't disagree more with those who didn't like this 2002 pilot presentation. As a long-time fan of the original, I found this re-imagining both well-written and well-executed. True, its story borrows from the original series and from other time travel concepts that have aired over the last forty years, but it does a very good job of bringing many disparate ideas into a cohesive whole.

The series was not bought because its completion coincided with those of the Stargate series, which was most unfortunate. Fortunately, however, it now is included in the 'Time Tunnel' Volume Two DVD set just released by Fox, giving a great many people the opportunity to watch and judge it for themselves.

There are reports that the Sci-Fi Channel belatedly has picked up this pilot for regular series production and broadcast in 2007. If so, I for one will be a faithful viewer.

Deserves to be on the air
kevin-haghighat21 July 2006
I just got to see this pilot and must say I found it amazing. I grew up staying up late to watch the original. I think this was a great remake of the series and just like Glactica's remake it has it's own identity which can separate it from the original. For instance, this show would not be restricted to English speaking era's or even earth. I was eagerly looking for the next episode. Having been piloted in 2002, I was hoping the whole series would be on DVD. I was shocked to find out that it never took off. If it means anything to anyone, please take another look at this. It has a great cast as it was first piloted but I'm sure there are other actors who can do a pretty good job for most of the characters. Please bring this back. It was a great pilot and I'm eagerly waiting to see the next episode.

Cheers.

Network executives mess up again
TVholic23 January 2005
Warning: Spoilers
The original "Time Tunnel" series was one of Irwin Allen's less successful efforts. It lasted but a single season (although it was a 30 episode season, long in those days and impossible today) and wasn't widely syndicated in afterschool reruns like Lost in Space or Voyage to the Bottom of the sea. Which was just as well, because it became very formulaic even in that single season. Our dashing heroes (always with impeccable hair) land in a strange time, get into conflict with the denizens of the era (or, in the later episodes, often invaders from space), have a fistfight or two and save the day, then are tossed into next week's episode.

This new pilot was perhaps a mish-mash of other series thrown together, but by and large, it worked. Mostly, it was due to the two lead actors playing Doug and Toni. Flynn was a little too gung ho and two-dimensional. JD was a stereotypical CIA agent with ice water in her veins and the medic was little more than strongman Willie Armitage from "Mission: Impossible." He did have potential as a character, though.

Unlike the series, there was no ultra-secret, ultra-expensive, ultra-gigantic, ultra-everything government time travel project. It was simply a nuclear fusion experiment gone awry, creating the timestorm that is the source of their problems and allowing the time travel that makes their missions possible. The term "the 240," indicating the 4 hours they spent stabilizing their end of the timestorm, didn't really work. It's hard to believe it took exactly 240 minutes to do that. It might have been better to call that "T-zero," for the point from which everything else is measured.

The new Time Tunnel is more impressive than the set from the series, which is to be expected given the march of, uh, time. Actually, the set from the original pilot was also fairly impressive, with additional windows overlooking the large control room, although it was simplified in the course of the series. The new Mission Control is similar to that, with the control room looking down at the tunnel through a shielded window, shades of Stargate SG-1. The CGI tunnel was certainly better than the forced perspective model where actors could only run 15 feet up the tunnel, seemingly growing as the tunnel narrowed too quickly.

This remake takes some cues from "Search" aka Probe (1972), a cult series where agents from a secret agency are assigned to search for lost or stolen items. In both, the agents carry equipment that let support personnel at headquarters see and hear everything they do, as well as being able to hear advice from HQ. The implant that could monitor what they see is highly implausible, but certainly better than the God's eye view they would see suspended in mid-air in the tunnel in the original series. It is also similar to Allen's "The Time Travelers" (1976), his own failed attempt at a revival. Unlike the series, where Doug and Tony are haplessly bounced through time, they have nearly full control of the time travel aspect here and in Travelers, having the ability to return to the present at will. In fact, it's very close to Timecop, the short-lived 1997 series on ABC. The premise is almost identical. Agents are sent back in time to correct ripples in history, then return to headquarters when history is restored.

Irwin Allen did not place much importance on character development. Throughout the entire run of the original show, we learned almost nothing about the backgrounds of Doug and Tony, other than Tony's father dying at Pearl Harbor. Allen liked to cut to the chase, so ten minutes into the show, Tony Newman had recklessly propelled himself into the past (with no clear reason to, I might add). This pilot spent quite a bit more time fleshing out Doug and Toni, so we can safely assume that they were meant to be the main characters again had the series been bought. The other characters are very sketchily drawn. Whether they would have even remained had the series started is anyone's guess.

Alas, time travel science fiction doesn't have a very large audience and the show wasn't ordered. Timecop was the last such failure. The most successful of recent efforts was the ridiculous "Time Trax." (Also ridiculously named. A real-life example of the line from Stargate SG-1's "Wormhole X-Treme" self-parody, "Research says that shows with X in the name get higher ratings.") At the very least, this pilot should have been aired even if the show was never picked up. The production was already paid for, so why not send it over to the Sci-Fi Channel and recoup some of the expenses? It was certainly better than pilots like "Island City" or "Star Command," neither of which were picked up but which did both air on Fox. Time was, decades ago, when unsold pilots were burned off in the summertime, but today's hypercompetitive TV market has no use for anything that doesn't look like a smash hit. We lose decent TV like this because of that mindset.

OK, I was impressed
rdrain-15 December 2006
I rented the dvds of the original series more for nostalgia than anything else...and found this gem.

Honestly I had not heard of a reboot of the series but when I watched it I was impressed. The story hit hard, having a great-uncle who fought in WWII (but made it home). I'm not sure why the series was not picked up, I do not know the details.

The acting was good, many first rate inside jokes...I do not want to give anything away but the idea of sacrifice for the greater good is very strong within this show. How it would have played out? Would you be willing to sacrifice what you love the most for ... what?

Honestly, rent the dvds to watch this episode and think of what might have been. Maybe Sci-Fi will give it another chance.

....galatica made the idea of a reboot possible...

A poorly done pilot with a great concept but nauseating characters
edshifres4 September 2004
The Time Tunnel concept is fabulous, and I would love to see a new series, but the 2002 un-aired pilot is the typical today's sci-fi, which focuses more on the proverbial arrogant, cocky characters and the "beating-around-the bush" storyline, with an overindulgence of bad humor. Too many of today's yuppie scriptwriters have no care nor understanding of quality writing and engaging characters. The Time Tunnel (2002) unaired pilot, unlike the original 1960s Irwin Allen series, has unlikeable, cold characters and horrendous acting. It does have an interesting storyline but is far less suspenseful than the original Time Tunnel series because this new version doesn't have Doug and Tony lost in time, but can return them to the tunnel at any time.

The un-aired pilot's best attribute is a nicely done war scene with incidental background music that challenges the emotions, and snow flurries that enhances the scenic setting landscape of war.

Overall, there is no comparison between the poorly produced Time Tunnel (2002) and the fabulous Time Tunnel TV series of 1966.

Thank You Arnold Veness
WyteRabit20 August 2007
It just so happened that I read Arnold's comments as I was watching the first Season of the Time Tunnel (Original Series). He mentioned that the 2002 Pilot was available on the Second Season DVD. Out of curiosity, I got out my second season and played the episode.

GREAT SHOW. I really enjoyed the updated concept and am sorry that it never became a series. I also noticed that there may be a 2007 series pilot in the making.

I was 7 when the original Time Tunnel aired and was immediately hooked. The concept was original and the stories were interesting. With the lack of good scifi material on television today, I truly hope some TV executive sees these comments and seriously considers bringing back a wonderful series.

excellent future update; please bring it back
wildwood08112 June 2009
as a fan of the original series i was pleased to find a copy of the 2002 version. i was a little sceptical expecting a stupid story with no great thought put into it, however the show was a great compliment to the original series with a great cast and a great re working of the original show. I really enjoyed it and i am sure it would have had a great fan base if the production company would have continued the series; its a great shame. I understand it was canned due to other time travelling' shows like Stargate which has never really appealed to me.What i like about the TT is the historical story lines which given modern CGI would have made this version of TT very original and exciting to watch.

Hope we see the TV series sometime soon
j7lr28 February 2008
I just watched this pilot. I loved it! It reminded me of my childhood. It is the TV series I loved the most when I was a kid. The remake is amazing. Since the movie starts, you are captured by it. It takes you back to a time and place you haven't lived and you feel you're part of the team, you think you're with them, trying to mend the unleashed reaction caused by scientists when they discovered the "hot fusion". You accompany these fellows in this fantastic journey and you enjoy every single minute of it.

The characters are credible. The story has some jokes, drama, fantasy. It's just great. When the movie ended I was waiting for more. Unfortunately, new episodes haven't been made yet. I'm pretty sure we'll have them soon. I'm looking forward to it!

Lest we forget ...

I find it ironic in the extreme that the reason most often given for this pilot not being picked up by the networks is that "it's too similar to Stargate".

Have these people forgotten that the original "Time Tunnel" series preceded "Stargate" by some 30 years - so if anything, it should be "Stargate is similar to Time Tunnel".

So let's not forget that without Irwin Allen's "Time Tunnel" to provide the inspiration and the basic concept behind it, there would probably never even have been any "Stargate".

And speaking personally, I'd take a new series of "Time Tunnel" over the entire "Stargate" franchise any time.

There had been rumours of another attempt to relaunch "Time Tunnel" in 2007, but sadly this seems to have come to nothing. A real pity.
