No genre is as prolific as horror, so it’s understandable that movies fall through the cracks all the time. That is where this new recurring column, Deep Cuts, comes in. While some movies remain popular and talked about, regardless of age, countless others have faded into the background or obscurity.
Each themed installment of this series will spotlight several overlooked, unappreciated or generally unknown movies from the past — some from way back when, and others from not so long ago — that could use some more attention.
The first edition of this column will look at horror movies featuring wintry settings. It may not feel or look like winter wherever you are right now, but somewhere it’s cold. And with a frosty backdrop, the five winter horror movies here feel more bleak than usual.

Rosanne Cash is set to release her first new album in nearly five years and has unveiled the first two tracks from the LP, titled She Remembers Everything. Out November 2nd on Blue Note Records, the album follows the triptych of the deeply personal Black Cadillac, The List and The River & the Thread, through which the singer-songwriter dealt with the loss of her father, Johnny Cash, and the deaths of her mother and stepmother, while also exploring her family’s Southern heritage.

Review Michael Noble 14 Aug 2013 - 17:00
Ray Donovan finally kicks into gear with its impressive fifth episode, which is by far the best we've seen from the show yet...
This review contains spoilers.
1.5 The Golem
Golem n [From Hebr. Galmi]
1. A supernatural shapeless form or entity fashioned from clay, often malevolent in nature.
2. A recently released Irish-American convict with a taste for troublemaking and black Cadillacs.
Ezra’s hallucinatory impression of Mickey Donovan came from out of nowhere, both in-universe and out. It felt odd seeing CGI in what is ordinarily a straight-up realist(ish) drama but two things excused it. Number one, that it was the very real result of Ezra’s tumour. Number two, it appeared in the best episode thus far of Ray Donovan and was driven by the very welcome acceleration of momentum.
Before we take a look at the unfortunate Ezra, let’s see what else went right with Golem.

Are Ray Donovan's anti-heroes too unlikeable to qualify as such? Here's Michael's review of Black Cadillac...
This review contains spoilers.
1.4 Black Cadillac
When James Gandolfini left the party back in June, several of his obituarists noted that his success had ushered in an era in which the antihero was the dominant figure in TV drama. In all honesty, the ‘lead baddie’ was nothing new – J.R. Ewing was the biggest TV star of the 1980s while in the 1990s, Andy Sipowicz typified the sort of TV character who you’d only have in your home if he was kept safely on the other side of the screen. Nevertheless, in the little more than a decade since Tony Soprano rocked onto our TVs we’ve seen a cavalcade of guys, Vic Mackey, Al Swearengen, Dexter Morgan, Don Draper, Walter White, whom we love in spite of ourselves.

Ray Donovan, Season 1, Episode 4: “Black Cadillac”
Written by: David Hollander
Directed by: John Dahl
Airs Sundays at 10 Pm (Et) on Showtime
Four episodes into Ray Donovan and already a regular viewing pattern emerges. When Ray appears onscreen, the natural reaction is to tense up. These are the moments when the show is at its bleakest; when it truly tries to be a crime drama and not some mishmash of family interludes and semi-comedic relationships that might actually be intended for comedic effect.
When any other tangential Donovan comes onscreen, though, the show’s timbre changes completely. Now Ray Donovan is a black comedy closer to Weeds or Shameless. It’s the humor of Breaking Bad without the actual dark meat of Vince Gilligan’s AMC drama. Ray’s brothers and his father live just as dour lives as Ray himself, yet they manage to enjoy themselves despite unpleasant living situations.

Ray went into "Black Cadillac" feeling like he had things pretty well under control.
He had the information he needed to get his father indicted for the murder of the priest in Boston and a warrant would be issued later that day. Avi would keep an eye on Mickey as Ray took Abby, Bridget and Conor to the Bel Air Academy to see what it would be like to really invest the La lifestyle with their family.
Things started to slowly fall apart as the day wore on. Ray's phone never stopped ringing, which always irks Abby. Stu was there - his son attends Bel Air - and apologized to Abby about his behavior in the past, but some other jackass took the public opportunity to flip off Ray and tell him to eff off during the entire Bel Air presentation. Ray's immediately family may act like kids, but the La elite aren't any better.

Looks like Quiet Riot is back.
That's right, you heard me, Quiet Riot, the 1980s heavy metal band famous for their cover of Slade's "Cum On Feel The Noize," is back on tour and with new singer Mark Huff.
Check out the band's MySpace page to listen to a sampler of classic tunes they re-recorded with Huff on vocals. The sample track has "Cum On Feel The Noize," "Metal Health/Bang Your Head," and "Slick Black Cadillac," and I have to say, it sounds damn good. Also, below, you can watch a video of Huff performing "Metal Health/Bang Your Head" with Quiet Riot at a show they played last month in Denver.
Except for a one-year break-up between 2003 and 2004, Quiet Riot has still been making albums and touring all these years up until original singer Kevin Dubrow's death from an accidental overdose of cocaine in 2007 [...]...

One of country music’s great rebels returns with a softer yell Marshall Chapman’s new release, Big Lonesome, was intended to be a duets album. But when her musical soulmate, acclaimed singer-songwriter Tim Krekel, suddenly succumbed to cancer in 2009, her plans were dashed. The period of mourning that followed has produced a remarkable collection of songs, a concept album about grief in the vein of Rosanne Cash’s Black Cadillac....

British folk rocker Billy Bragg is to record a new album with country queen Rosanne Cash. Producer Joe Henry brought the "A New England" singer together with Cash at the Ludwigsburger Sclossfestspiele festival he recently oversaw in Germany, and the two singer/songwriters became fast friends.
Now Bragg has asked Henry to produce their first album together. He tells Billboard.com, "We had a great time singing together, and since then we've been plotting on trying to get into the studio together. We're all coming together in November."
"She's (Cash) a great songwriter, particularly the Black Cadillac album she made that dealt with the death of her mother and father and stepmother. It's an incredibly powerful album. And she turned out to be a really whipsmart person and, of course, a great musician."...

Rosanne Cash has never been more naked as an artist than she is today. Her new album The List isn't the record of a deteriorating relationship like Interiors, that people can pick apart for clues to her private life. It's not a meditation on love and loss like Black Cadillac, which everyone associates with the passing of her dad Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash (a second mom to Rosanne) and her beloved mother Vivian Liberto Cash Distin -- even though "Black Cadillac" in particular came to her before any of them died. It's just Rosanne Cash as a singer, putting her stamp on 12 songs that came from The List, a compilation of 100 songs her father insisted she learn if she wanted to have a career in music. The album is out now on Manhattan Records and it's inspired...
