In honor of Halloween, I once again have a special essay-article up, and this time I can name the contributor. Randall William Cook rates special celebrity status around DVD Savant despite being a friend from way, way back. I hope he's writing a book about his career, because his Hollywood experiences range far afield, from UCLA film school, to acting and directing film and TV, to doing special make-ups, animation direction, front-rank stop motion direction, and second unit direction on big features. Heavily into digital work since the 1990s, Randy supervised character animation and sequence direction for the three Lord of the Rings movies, netting him an amazing three Oscars, three years straight. And he's still the same guy from college -- a new Harryhausen or Welles disc comes out, and he wants to know all about it. Oh, and Cook is a fine writer as well -- as I think this thoughtful piece shows.

Entertainment and lifestyle news site PopSugar is delving into the world of web series. Seriously Distracted, the site’s first scripted comedy programming starring Amy Sedaris, debuts on October 21, 2014. Produced by Above Average (the network behind such comedy productions as Monkey Love and One Take Movies), Seriously Distracted tells the story of Sedaris’s New York-based publicity firm, LeGrand PR, whose employees just can’t seem to get past their obsession with pop culture in order to snag their biggest client yet. PopSugar Studios president David Grant told The Hollywood Reporter in an exclusive interview that “the show began to develop after [he] saw a video that the women of Above Average put together about how they reacted to the news of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's ‘conscious uncoupling.’” "We're always keeping our eyes out for things that we feel our audience will love," said Grant. "And Seriously Distracted felt right for our brand.

Above Average continues to churn out new series at a rapid pace. The YouTube channel run by Saturday Night Live production company Broadway Video has debuted a new content slate, which includes three new series. The first new series to debut is Monkey Love, an animated comedy about a male chimpanzee who masquerades as a human woman in order to find love. The first man on his docket is a dopey dad played by Jeff Goldblum, and future guests include Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, and Tim Meadows. As you might have guessed from the description, Monkey Love is, um, unusual. The other two entries in Above Average's new content slate play things much closer to the belt. The Idiot's Guide To Smart People is also animated; it teaches the 'ignorant' among us how to talk politics, religion, and music with the so-called 'smart' people of the world. Naturally, The Idiot's...

Monkey love! It was a case of instant attraction when a little girl visited a zoo and came face-to-face with a baby gorilla. In the YouTube video the blond-haired cutie can be seen aping the gorilla's moves as it walks by and slaps the large windows. The pair, who are about the same size, wave their arms in the air and chase each other as the little girl and her adult companions laugh in surprise. And then comes the "awww" part. The gorilla, who's been closely watching the kid, presses his mouth against the glass and so does the little...
