Good stuff from Mr One Trick Pony himself....
Mike Reid's 1995 stand-up gig - now finally available on DVD - is a follow-up to the two original Mike Reid 'Live' videos previously released in the early 1990s. It's the best of the three, with Mike at his most confident and witty and much of what's here is laugh-out-loud funny. The gig itself, filmed during a boiling hot summer of 1995, was filmed in front of a clearly enthusiastic audience and the jokes range from the usual verbal assaults on his wife to the more general "This bloke walked into a pub..." style gags. The joke about the two fishing pals is an all time classic and there are a number of high-points in this little gem.
However....
Whilst Mike is a very funny man and this stand-up routine is perhaps my favourite of his, one can't help but feeling that the term 'one trick pony' springs to mind when watching his stuff. Even when Mike appears to be spontaneous on stage, just about everything he says is pre-planned (this is something I have picked up on having seen all his videos and also having seen the big man live!).
After this recording had hit the shelves around Christmas 1995, Mike followed it up with the nearly-as-good "Mike Reid live at the Queen Vic." Then, following this, came two more releases that mainly contained a mixture of jokes and material from his previous videos, simply retold at different venues. Very disappointing indeed, especially for those people who had shelled out £12.99 to find they were getting more of the same.
This is a damn funny DVD nonetheless.
