It was twelve years ago that a young director named Jt Petty first made an impression on the world when his debut feature, Soft For Digging, was unleashed at Sundance. Petty has charted an unusual, challenging career since with his output ranging from video game scripts - most notably several Splinter Cell games - to controversial faux doc S&Man and a flirtation with the mainstream industry with 2008 effort The Burrowers. Petty's a creatively restless sort and somehow through all of this the film that opened it all up for him has proven rather difficult to see. But not any more. I'll let Petty explain it himself, in the following open letter to his mother. Dear Mom, Big day today, I'm releasing my first movie,...

Netflix just doesn’t slow down its new streaming releases, with a huge crop recently being added on the first of the month and more noteworthy titles appearing on regularly. The great variety in titles can be easily seen by taking a look a rich, slow Western-horror, an absurd comedy, a dude punching wolves in the face, a prescient media classic and . The New and Noteworthy The Burrowers (2008) It’s 1879 in the Dakota territories and someone is attacking entire families in their homes. Some individuals are slaughtered and their bodies left behind while other family members are taken. Assuming the attacks to be the work of the Sioux, a group of settlers set off to find the missing members of the Stewart family. Along the way, they meet up with the vile, racist Captain Henry Victor (Doug Hutchison) and his troops. The settlers part ways with the Captain and his men and, as...

#29. Hellbenders - J.T Petty This one might be a little of a stretch, but perhaps a decade since J.T. Petty blasted on the scene with Soft for Digging a $6000 feature that was selected for the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. Up the budget a little more, insert 3D technology and add thesps Clancy Brown, Dan Fogler and Clifton Collins Jr. to a genre-twisting nouveau horror film and Hellbenders might be the hot pick-up title in the Park City at Midnight section. Gist: The movie is about a secret group of elite demonologists in a Brooklyn diocese who battle a terrifying supernatural force that threatens their lives and faith. Producers: Jon S. Denny, Lawrence Mattis, David Moscow, Mark L. Pederson, Aldey Sanchez (Salvage)(Ioncinema.com Preview Page // IMDb Link) ...

Bert and Ernie (recent homosexual rumors aside) have never done the alphabet this way. Makers of the upcoming film The ABC's of Death have rounded up 25 of the brightest young directors in the horror genre in anticipation of their anthology-style film. They need one more, and you could be it!
And if having your work melded with the incredible group of directors listed below isn’t enough, they've sweetened the pot by offering a cool 5 G's to the winner.
Here's what's required of you: Obviously the ability to spell is going to help you out here as your film will have to be entitled T is for ... (this is where you insert whatever clever bit of nastiness you come up with). And obviously you've got to create a completely new piece. Judges will only consider films made specifically for this competition. Complete instructions are on the ABC's of Death Website.

While Jt Petty finishes up his latest film in Hellbenders, Bleeding Cool has learned that his once-proposed remake of the controversial mockumentary Faces of Death is gearing up to finally shoot later this year. Hellbenders is aiming for a 2012 release, so while this is still a rumor-ish scoop, one could imagine a late 2012, early 2013 release for Faces of Death.
Petty once described his remake like this: “I shouldn’t say too much yet, but it’s going to be a narrative film, very hard, very strange. I think the property is actually a great canvas for a very frightening film, not just splatter.”
No official word yet on plot, or if his vision will be like the mockumentary style of the original classic, but even with the slew of sequels and copycats, there’s been little to no narrative in these films. Petty’s wowed horror fans before in Soft for Digging,...

The horror anthology The ABCs of Death, inspired in part by early kids' books and bearing a real resemblance to Edward Gorey's The Gashlycrumb Tinies, is a who's-who of current horror and genre stars and up and comers. The film will be divided into twenty-six segments in which a letter of the alphabet corresponds to a method of death. The segments will be short, but given that they'll be directed by people like Nacho Vigalondo, Jason Eisener, Noburo Iguchi and many more, they might pack a punch. Two more directors were added to the list today, bringing the total number of signees to twenty-five. Xavier Gens (Frontier(s), Hitman) and Christopher Smith (Severance, Triangle, Black Death) are now on the roster. Details of a contest to choose the final director are after the break. First, here's the complete list of twenty-five (actually twenty-six, since there is one team unit) confirmed...

Around here we're long-time fans of director J.T. Petty. We've been following his career since Soft for Digging, and the guy hasn't let us down yet. Now the opportunity has come up to have you, yes you, participate in his next film, Hellbenders. Read on for details.
Horror filmmaker J.T. Petty and Circle of Confusion ("The Walking Dead") want your home-made videos for Hellbenders! This upcoming major 3D movie is looking for juicy, bloody, awesomely heinous devil possession and exorcism footage. That's where you come in!
Here's what J.T. and his team are looking for:
2-4 minutes of footage that looks home-made, security camera footage, cell phone footage, etc. The more R-rated, the better! Make us jump, cringe, physically react! Lotsa physical action, lotsa violence! Demons that are somewhere between Evil Dead and Martyrs. You can show the exorcist, but it's not necessary. It's all about the possession!
Go to hell for big-screen glory.

Genre fav J.T. Petty - director of Soft for Digging, Mimic: Sentinel, The Burrowers, S&Man and the forthcoming HellBenders - is getting behind the camera for Haunted Temple. Temple is heading for production this fall in Japan, one of the first Hollywood-based features to shoot there after the March earthquake and tsunami. Haunted Temple is a Japanese-style horror feature reminiscent of The Ring and The Grudge. Producers are keeping details about the script under wraps. Industrial recently released Werner Herzog's My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done and Repo Chick. Macari/Edelstein produced the U.S. remake of the The Ring, The Ring 2 and Shelter.

My introduction to writer/director Ben Rock came when I interviewed him for his 2009 highly-underrated flick Alien Raiders, which took themes from Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Thing and combined them with a little bit of “24” for good measure (hard not to when the film’s star is Carlos Bernard). Last year I had the opportunity to experience Rock’s work in the realm of live theatre with his twisted play Ba’al and quickly realized he’s someone who has an interesting perspective when it comes to genre-related projects.
I recently caught up with Rock, who's been busy working on content for a recent big-name video game release, to find out what his top five independent horror films are. Check out his favorites below!

What exactly counts as an underground horror movie? Frankly, that’s a tough distinction to make. “Underground” films are generally, by definition, genre-less concoctions. But, if one wanted to use a broad definition of “underground” to mean a low-budget film that didn’t enjoy a large theatrical release, well, that counts for a wide breadth of what used to be called “Direct to DVD” features.
According the website Instant Watcher, Netflix currently has 576 movies available for streaming in the horror genre. The streaming horror movie titles I’m listing below are indeed low-budget films that have flown under the radar because they didn’t enjoy large theatrical releases. But, also, they each have an almost indefinable quality that sets them apart from their peers.
They’re a little more imaginative, particularly for their low budgets. A little stranger. A little more grotesque. Quirkier. More outlandish. However you want to describe them,...

I am a horror fan. I make no apologies for this. There is a lot to be gained from an experience shared with other genre fans sitting in a darkened theater. At various times over the years (as I am clearly an old crone), I have wondered what draws me to the genre. Is it experiencing fear in a controlled environment, so that I don’t feel threatened? Is it a revenge fantasy made real? Or am I simply a voyeur?
This last suggestion seems to be the theme behind Jt Petty’s (Soft for Digging, The Burrowers) film S&Man. (Caution! Potential Spoiler in this review for those who don’t know the film’s “gimmick”)
In S&Man (now on DVD and Blu-ray under Magnolia Home Entertainment’s Magnet banner), J.T. Petty—the writer/director of Soft For Digging, Mimic: Sentinel and The Burrowers—examines underground horror, voyeurism and the connections between sex and violence in the genre. This interesting, albeit uneven, mix of fact and fiction is presented as a documentary, but combines actual interviews with real people and professionals with a fabricated storyline involving a made-up director whose snuff films may be the real deal.

Around Dread Central we love us some Jt Petty. The indie filmmaker has turned out some really quality flicks over the past few years including Soft For Digging, The Burrowers, S&Man, and the better than it had any right to be Mimic 3. Word just broke about his latest foray into terror. Ready to find out what's on tap?
According to Bloody Disgusting Petty (pictured right) is getting back behind the camera with Hellbenders, a new horror comedy said to be in the vein of classics such as The Exorcist and Ghostbusters. Taking place in modern-day New York, a team of holy men (consisting of ministers and priests) battle the forces of evil. Awesome. Shooting is scheduled to begin this November in New York City.
Pretty damned nifty! Look for more on this one soon!

After sitting on the shelf for nearly four years, “The Burrowers” and “Soft for Digging” director Jt Petty’s mockumentary horror flick “S@Man” (aka “Sandman”) is making its way onto North American DVD on October 12th, courtesy of Magnolia Home Entertainment. The film chronicles the exploits of a filmmaker (Petty portraying himself) as he delves into the seedy underbelly of extreme underground horror. Naturally, it doesn’t take long for things to go horrible awry. I’ve been hearing really good things about this film for a while now, so it’s nice to know it’s finally getting a proper home on DVD. The official trailer for the flick has been embedded below, so be sure to give it a look-see on your way out.

As everyone reading the site knows, I'm a huge fan of old school radio drama so this latest news that Larry Fessenden's Glass Eye Pix is launching a new genre audio program entitled "Tales from Beyond the Pale" is music to my ears!
Here are the details from the press release: Conceived during a fog-drenched car ride with nothing out the windshield but an horizon-less void, Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid bring you audio theater inspired by the vintage radio shows of Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre, Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles. "Tales From Beyond The Pale" will be brought to you by Fessenden’s production outfit Glass Eye Pix, which is responsible for dozens of celebrated independent films including I Sell The Dead, The House Of The Devil, The Last Winter, Wendy And Lucy, as well as the forthcoming Stake Land and The Innkeepers.

Looking for the perfect movie to take your parents and kids to after indulging in a bit of Thanksgiving turkey? Well, Jt Petty's horror documentary S&Man is probably not it, but if live in or around Brooklyn, NY and can tear yourself away from your filial obligations, you owe it to yourself to check out the film's screening on Sunday, November 29th.
Jt Petty (The Burrowers, Soft for Digging) will be in attendance at UnionDocs in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, along with Erik and Bill Zebub, which should make for the kind of post-screening Q&A you'd tell our grandchildren about if not for consideration of their healthy upbringing. Petty also promises, "There's a good chance of a lot more crew/cast/subjects showing up, and if drinks don't accompany the screening, they will almost certainly follow; ought to be a fun night."
Here are the details and a rather lengthy synopsis:
