A promising directorial debut for Billy Tucci
Robbo-1417 February 2003
Billy Tucci is well known in comic circles as being at the forefront of the independent comic publishing movement of the 1990s. His book Shi which Tucci wrote, illustrated and self-published enjoyed unprecedented sales for an independent book. In 2001, Tucci took his first steps into another storytelling medium by filming the live-action short comedy Some Trouble of a SeRRious Nature.

Comics2Film recently took a look at the 26:46 minute movie. This version of the movie is an extended director's cut. A shorter release is being prepped for the 2003 festival circuit.

The movie opens with a text scroll that sets up the premise for the movie: After the close of World War II, Bill McCarthy, Assistant Service Manager of Vought-Sikorsky Aircraft received a distressing letter of complaint from one Caleb Flerk. The missive raised eyebrows because Flerk claimed ownership of a F4U Corsair fighter plane, a craft sold only to the U.S. Military. Furthermore, Mr. Flerk, clearly a backwoods fellow, is woefully ill-prepared to be using such a vehicle (much less the typewriter that he wrote the letter with). The movie, then, is a comedic depiction of the circumstances described in Flerk's letter.

The movie opens with a playful credit sequence that sets the tone for the comedy. Credit text is typed out in the broken-typewriter font and phonetic English that the main character favors. For example, Tucci's credit reads, "Ritten, Pradoozed n' directum by Boom-boOOm ToOochy."

From there we open on the Flerk homestead (a stereotypical hillbilly hangout, complete with moonshine jug, outdoor bath tub and confederate flag) where Flerk (played by Brian Finney), with two busted legs, hunts and pecks his way through his letter of complaint.

What follows then is the story of how a Navy pilot, having just gotten the news that the war is over, lands his F4U in Flerk's backyard, leaving the hick, and his snaggletoothed pal to take possession of the aircraft.

Brian Finney and brother Andrew Finney play the cerebrally-challenged compadres who assume ownership of the fighter plane. Both actors have experience playing bit parts in Hollywood productions. It should come as no surprise they a good job portraying the of the two yokels intent on using the war machine for, "sportin' about in the evenings, after chores."

Tucci makes an auspicious debut as a fiilmmaker. His camera work is very impressive. Although it's a low-budget affair, Some Trouble looks first-rate. There are a few sequences where we see the fighter plane in flight and our characters interacting with it. While I would have assumed such action sequences were impossible to do on a limited budget, Tucci does them and does them well.

Apparently some of the plane shots are CGI effects. I say "apparently" because their integration with the rest of the movie is fairly seamless. There's only one shot that I was able to identify as CGI and even that one is top-notch. The rest are so well done you don't even notice them.

The comedy plays very broad and cartoony. Most laughs come from poking fun at the eccentric and none-too-bright residents of Hockeyjock. There're plenty of gags that rely on the town folks' fixations with spitting, farting and other scatological functions but the movie is mostly good for some laughs with some downright hilarious moments.

The short film looks a lot more expensive than it actually is and is very polished for for the work of a first-time filmmaker. All in all, Some Trouble is a promising start to a filmmaking career.

Corn Pone Comedy With Big City Wit!
beausmith28 July 2003
Some Trouble Of A SeRRious Nature was like a breath of outhouse air...only in a good way. As we all know, the TV and Film industry have always shunned any type of project that deals with a "down home" flavor. More times than not Hollywood has been wrong. It's a case of Hollywood not really knowing what the real audience wants and thinks is entertaining. They become a little insulated in L.A. . Enough to where they miss out on many great opportunities. Trouble Of A SerRRious Nature is one of these. Here you have a small movie that goes against the grain by first off being a small Indy movie that isn't a tired, over done drama like most Film Festival movies "think" they have to be like.

It also runs against the current because it was written and directed by a hard-line New Yorker who captures all the "down home" comedy that has a broad appeal from coast to coast.

I highly suggest this film in the fact that it is not "Business as usual". The direction on this film was so inspiring for others. I think if you really watch it you will see wonderful innovations that some directors either don't know about or have forgotten.

Great Story, Great Movie !
ztekej5 February 2005
This is definitely one of the finest short films ever. It has broad appeal reaching kids and adults alike. It crosses the wartime movie genre with a Ma and Pa Kettle flavor. Unless one previews the entire DVD, one would be clueless to the CGI effects. The editing was flawless and this writer had no idea that computer generated art was used.

This carefully assembled band of performers acted with exquisite timing.

It is obvious the vision of the director, Billy Tucci, solidified and purveyed the connection between his dream and reality. I highly recommend this film for some laughs and a token insight into an historical moment.

Bravo!!!

I think that Mr. Tucci has laid down a solid foundation for a promising career with this wonderfully entertaining short film. The energy and humor of the piece is second only to that of Billy himself when speaking with others about the project. The years spent in the comic book industry telling his beautiful Shi stories has given him an extraordinary sense of pace, mood and moving the viewer around a scene without interfering with the action. His love for story telling is extremely apparent and makes the transition from print to film well. BRAVO!!

The most hillarious short film comedy I ever saw!
GDulias6 December 2002
I think, that Bill Tucci outdid himself in writing and directing this very funny and entertaining short comedy film. As this, his first atempt, shows a very promising future in this venture,I want to wish him the best of luck and success; he really deserves another Award for his talent as writer and director of this hillarious short,to go along with the first one he received at the World Premiere showing! BRAVO!!!!!!!1 Gottfried P. Dulias

Some bad jokes but overall very well done

A couple of the one-liners weren't that great, but overall it was great! I laughed many times over, and thats pretty good seeing as how the movie is only about 30 minutes long. This movie is a good start for Tucci's movie career, and I look forward to many more movies, as I have enjoyed his comics for so long.

Very funny, with a little history thrown in. Kids and adults will like it. This film got a ton of laughs at the Long Island Film Festival. Perfectly cast. It moves fast and there's never a dull moment.

They said he couldn't do it, and by God, he proved them wrong!

SOME TROUBLE exists because William Tucci had the brass to take the bull by the horns and create HIS vision...something VERY few people can claim.

The 19 minute film showcases Tucci's raw talent as a director and provides constant laughs. If you're a fan of WWII fighter planes, the Three Stooges or you just like to laugh at red necks, this is the movie for you!

A TON of fun, good laughs and the promise of more TROUBLE...this film is HIGHLY recommended!

Wonderful, wonderful film!

Watched a screening of Billy Tucci's film and was absolutely blown away by the comedic timing, the fast movie's fast pace and originality. But most impressive was when Tucci stated that the first time he was on a film set was his own with over 100 extras, a carnival set up and a World War 2 fighter plane. His experience writing and illustrating comics made him seem like a natural at story telling and this was confirmed by the standing ovation and non-stop laughter from start to finish. I was also tremendously impressed with the film's 1940's authenticity and John Vilardi's incredible CGI effects as well. All this on such a tiny budget. Amazing! Well Done!

Darn funny stuff!

Saw "SeRRious" as a rough cut before Billy finished the final mix and cut. Durn snuffy fun! Well shot with XLNT performances and some not-so-noticeable CGI FX and some really nice stunt flying - the likes I havent seen since the halcyon days of flyboy films like "The Blue Max".

The outhouse humor of the backwoods boys added to the raw flavour of the mix in the classic Barney Google/Snuffy Smith melieu.

Highly recommended! Now where's mah jug o'moonshine!
