A unique challenge like never before.

If you love strategy games, you'll love Pikmin.

Pikmin surrounds you with amazing graphics and easy-to-learn gameplay the instant you grab the controller. The pikmin are easily trained and can be told what to do without much problem (until they fall into the water and drown themselves).

Many problems are presented that Captain Olimar and his cute, hard-working pikmin will have to overcome in order to ensure the survival of our hero. Included in the problems are: large lakes, huge pikmin-eating beasts, out-of-order bridges, and huge walls that can only be passed by the use of yellow, bomb-wielding pikmin.

I've heard people complain that this game (as well as others) designed for Nintendo are "cartoony". I don't know whether this comment was made to be an insult, picking at an assumed "flaw", or a compliment, as I have heard the same people say they enjoyed Crash Bandicoot or other similar "cartoony" games. The fact is that Pikmin may be "cartoony", but this is no flaw. This adds to the humor in the game, building up the already high satisfaction levels. I don't believe that if a game looks like little children's cartoons, it is bad. Rather, let's try to stay open-minded with all games, "cartoony" and devilishly gory alike.

All in all, Pikmin is well worth your time. Think of it as a sort of humorous way of playing Jurassic Park with a twist. After all, a huge ton of your pikmin will be smashed by leaping frogs, be eaten by huge "Bulbears", be burnt by flame-throwing animals, or drown because they weren't smart enough to follow you and steer clear of the river. This all adds a stylish, unique gameplay you shouldn't miss out on.

Awesome game

Really fun game. My favorite thing is the enemies and the bosses. There all really good. The areas are fun to explore. The challenge mode is good. The pikmin are likeable but there are a few problems. The pikmin can trip and it is just annoying. pikmin can clip through bridges and die. They clip through corpses and die.

Pikmin

Warning: Spoilers
Shigsy once again has out done himself with this little Gem as Captain Olimar who crash landed on a planet you meet the Pikmin who are used to help Olimar find the pieces of his missing spaceship. Some people have complained about the time limit placed on this game but I found it a good way to beat my own records that I had set up for myself. This game is good especially with the way that the Pikmin are used in a battle you can try to beat the game without losing any of your Pikmin army or you could just throw them in there and bring the enemies down but either way is good so ignore those who say this game is rubbish and play it for yourself and see if you like it.

Masterpiece

Ok. Here's the lowdown. On a vacation trip to some planet out in the vastness of space, Captain Olimar's ship is hit by a meteor and crash lands on a planet, sending 30 of his ship parts flying into random locations. His life support is only 30 day's and must find all his ships pieces in 30 day's. But he is not alone. He finds the Pikmin. Little creatures that work in teams and are commanded by him. It really infuriates me when people take 1 look at this game and say "This is so gay." or "This HAS to be the stupidest game." and don't even try it. Just as the old saying goes "You can't judge a book by it's cover" it goes the same with games. The people who have acctually played the game enjoy it. Control is simple and you soon even get a feeling for the little plant creatures that you pull out of the ground, thus making it heart sobbing when they accidentally drown or are killed in the heat of battle. This game is one that'll go down in history. There is a good chance more Pikmin games will be made, due to the fact that the creator of this game, Shigeru Miyamoto, has made sequels to all the games he has created. Just think. The next title might even be: "Return to Planet Pikmin" or something like that.

INCREDIBLE!!!

Shigeru Miyamoto who introduced us to well known video game figures like Mario, Link, and Donkey Kong once more introduces us to another concept of his. That's a group of characters called Pikmin (which is also the game's name).

In the game, you play Captain Olimar whose spaceship the dolphin crashes on an unusual planet after it gets hit by an asteroid. With your ship's pieces scattered all over the planet you must retrieve them to get back to your home planet, unfortuantly, you don't have much time because Olimar's life support will go out if you don't get the ship back together in 30 days or less. However you will meet the adorable Pikmin who will help you find the missing parts to your ship, as well as defeat bizarre creatures for you by fighting them in large numbers. They can also lift the enemies, as well as colored token like items that can be brought back to the Pikmin's pod to be turned in for Pikmin seeds in order to have more Pikmin follow you on your quest. There are different colored Pikmin all of whom can do different tasks for you in order to get further to retreving parts of your ship, getting back home, and survive.

Strategy gamers will probably get a kick out of the cute, and unique look of the game. But don't let that fool you, this game can be chalenging quite fast. If you own a Gamecube, and can't resist strategy games, well this might be for you!

Whimsical adventures await you

Warning: Spoilers
(www.plasticpals.com) Pikmin is Shigeru Miyamoto's first 100% original game series on the Gamecube, and his first real-time strategy game. This is more than enough to warrant an examination. At first, it would appear to be a strategy game for kids, with cute characters and simplistic play. However, looks can be deceiving and Pikmin contains all sorts of challenges that will entertain older gamers as well.

Olimar, a deep-space pilot, crash-lands on an alien planet. Along the way, his spaceship (the "Dolphin", the previously announced code-name for the Gamecube), has lost 30 odd parts which are essential if he is to ever see home again! During a brief survey of the crash site, Olimar discovers what appears to be a red onion on legs. The onion proceeds to spit out a seed which burrows into the ground, sprouting a leaf. Much to Olimar's surprise, upon yanking the leaf out of the ground, there appears a little red anthropomorphic creature which Olimar names a "Pikmin" after his favourite brand of carrots.

Killing local predators may have been difficult for Pikmin on their own, but with you commanding them they make a decent wrecking crew! Olimar tosses Pikmin at an enemy, or can cause the Pikmin to swarm an enemy by directing them with the "C" stick. After an enemy is killed, or upon discovering a ship part, the Pikmin will automatically try to lift it and carry it back to base camp. Depending on the size and weight of a given object, more Pikmin will be required to carry it (as denoted above the given object). If more than the required amount carry an object, they carry it twice as fast.

Once a large enough force has been amassed, it's up to Olimar to take them out on an expedition to find the missing ship parts. Along the way, they encounter obstacles that require different strategies. For example, a cardboard box is blocking the route. Commanding the Pikmin to move towards the box, they automatically begin pushing against it – but it won't budge. Olimar can see he needs a certain number of Pikmin to move the box, say 20, but he only has 10 Pikmin trying to do the job. This kind of puzzle is very simple, but serves as a building block towards much more complex obstacles.

Soon Olimar discovers different kinds of Pikmin. The Yellow Pikmin can be tossed higher, and they can carry bombrocks. Blue Pikmin have gills and can traverse underwater, where the others would simply drown. This paves the way for greater and more diverse challenges. Olimar discovers that Pikmin who drink nourishing nectar, or who are allowed to remain planted in the ground long enough, will grow buds, and then flower. Flowered Pikmin run twice as fast and can even take damage from enemies (reverting back to the slower, regular Leaf Pikmin).

Adding to the challenge is a 30 day time-limit, imposed by the ship's faltering oxygen supply. Often, an entire day is spent clearing an area of enemies, meaning by the end of the game you are forced to collect more than one ship-part per day (which, though taxing, provides an even better sense of accomplishment!). Since each day lasts for only about 15 minutes, this puts the game length at only 7 and a half hours. However, this is only half the story, as often you will fail to accomplish what you had planned in any given day, and might choose to restart to do a better job.

Graphically, the game is gorgeous. Beautifully rendered organic environments, both above and below ground, and textured with the utmost attention to detail. It is rumoured that Shigeru Miyamoto took photographs of his own garden, which were then used as texture maps for the actual game. Leaves have just the right waxy highlights, and maintain their integrity upon close inspection. Water glistens just right, and distorts everything underwater. Enemy designs are unlike anything you've seen before; strange and colourful creations with a life and mind of their own. Not to mention the Pikmin themselves; seeing 100 Pikmin marching across the land at your command, often with just a couple of stragglers, is a sight to behold in and of itself!

There is so much charm in the design of this game, from the Pikmin themselves on, that it's easy to fall in love. For example, after a hard day's work, Olimar returns to his ship – where an email from his loving wife and kids awaits. And when his family hasn't contacted him, he writes down any new observations from the day in the Captain's Log. Pikmin is a new, simplified, but extremely fun strategy game for everyone. It's unfortunate that Nintendo doesn't come up with new game ideas like this one more often.

An honest review made by an honest guy.

You really have to feel this game throught the original Gamecube controller and throught the original console, because this game... is actually pretty good. The gameplay isn't too crazy, you grow your pikmin population by collecting recourses, fighting enemies and collecting your spaceship parts to repair it, it's surprisingly very addicting.

If you like simple and addicting games, I highly reccomend this game, you won't be dissapointed.
