It has been a rollercoaster week for the BBC’s biggest entertainment show, Strictly Come Dancing.
The TV competition, which celebrated its 20th anniversary with a BAFTA award last weekend for Best Entertainment Show, is reported to be examining “serious complaints” made against one of its highest-profile dance professionals, who has this week quit the show.
The Times of London quotes a city law film who has told UK media that the BBC is now “evidence gathering” after allegations made against Giovanni Pernice, who has been with the show for over a decade and won it in 2021 with his partner, deaf actress Rose Ayling-Ellis.
And The Sun newspaper reports that actress Amanda Abbington, who was partnered with Pernice last year but left the show after a few weeks citing medical reasons, is one of the complainants, along with two unnamed others.

The end came abruptly for David Walliams’ tenure on Britain’s Got Talent. The comedian and children’s author served as a judge on the ITV reality series for a decade, until vulgar remarks he had allegedly made about certain contestants came to light via The Guardian in November 2022. In one instance, Walliams referred to an elderly contestant as a “c**t” multiple times; in another, he described a female contestant as “the slightly boring girl you meet in the pub that thinks you want to f*** them, but you don’t”. Walliams apologised at the time, stating that the insults were lifted from “private conversations with friends” and “were never intended to be shared”.
Plenty of other celebrities have committed more grievous sins than Walliams and held onto their jobs; it’s perhaps just the rebarbative optics of Walliams’s comments that made his role untenable. After the Bgt insult furore,...

Amanda Holden has finally commented on David Walliams’s unceremonious exit from Britain’s Got Talent.
Walliams was replaced on the ITV talent show earlier this year after a leaked set recording from 2020 heard the actor and author making sexually explicit comments about a contestant.
Holden – who has been a judge on the show since 2007 – was asked whether she had a hand in Walliams’s decision to step down in a new interview with The Times.
“It’s not the mafia we work for. Oh my God, no!” the 52-year-old presenter responded. “He decided to step away. [Fellow Bgt judge] Alesha [Dixon] and I are having dinner with him in two weeks and he’s very happy writing. It was just… time to step back.”
Former Strictly Come Dancing judge Bruno Tonioli was announced as Walliams’s replacement in January this year.
Asked whether Walliams’s offending statements “merely reflect what most judges are really thinking”, Holden responded: “No,...

During the 1960s, American music was taken over by artists from the U.K. This era became known as the British Invasion, with U.K. pop and rock artists dominating the American charts. Many of these artists came and went, but others were wildly successful and remain in the pop culture zeitgeist today.
Here are the 5 best rock bands during the British Invasion 1. The Yardbirds The Yardbirds | Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images
The Yardbirds are arguably more famous for who was in the band than their music. The band started with Eric Clapton as its lead guitarist. Once Clapton departed, the band was joined by Jeff Beck and future Led Zeppelin member Jimmy Page. The Yardbirds had three legendary guitarists on their roster, and their songs always had impeccable instrumentals.
While The Yardbirds only lasted for five years, they did have a few hit songs, including “For Your Love”, “Heart...

With the elimination of Ciara Chyanne Morgan in episode two of “Making the Cut” for her activewear looks that looked more like they were going to the office, there were eight designers left competing to become the next great global brand: Curtis Cassell, Rafael Chaouiche, Georgia Hardinge, Sienna Li, Jeanette Limas, Markantoine Lynch-Boisvert, Gabriella Meyer, and Yannik Zamboni. So who kept up their hot streaks in “Winter Wear,” which premiered on Amazon Prime on August 26?
Assignment
It was a pretty straightforward task this week: the designers would create two-look winter wear collections with one high-fashion runway look and one accessible look, the latter of which would be sold in Amazon’s “Making the Cut” online store for the winning designer. Here’s the less straightforward part, though: they only have one day to complete the whole challenge. So we’ve gone from two weeks for the first assignment to two days for the second assignment,...

When His Dark Materials writer Jack Thorne stepped up to the Edinburgh TV Festival MacTaggart podium last year in an audience-less room, he wanted to address an issue that had felt hopelessly ignored in the mainstream through past decades.
The prolific British scribe’s proclamation that UK TV had “utterly and totally” failed disabled people drew headlines across the country and moved the industry up a gear in solving deep-seated legacy issues both behind and in-front of the camera that impact a minority which makes up around 20 of the population.
“What Jack did so brilliantly was contextualize how the industry can conduct itself within a wider conversation around the country’s attitudes toward disability and treatment during the pandemic,” says Peter Bowker, acclaimed British TV writer of the BBC’s influential autism drama The A Word. “Presenting the wider context is smart as you challenge the industry by saying ‘Don...

For huge fans of Strictly Come Dancing, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity.
For the first time in the show's history, people who aren't soap stars or singers are being given the chance to pull on the sequins and partner with a Strictly professional, performing in the ballroom in front of millions - all in the name of charity.
11,000 people applied to take part in The People's Strictly for Comic Relief, but only these six were chosen...

Trishna, who is a Multiple Sclerosis and disability fundraiser, tells DS that she loves Strictly Come Dancing. She has the programme on series record, and watches the show every week with her sister.
"We'll always try and guess what the judges' scores are going to be and all of that stuff," she explains.
And she's a "big" fan of her partner Aljaz, who she'll be dancing a jive with.

"There is still hope for the BBC," says Noel Edmonds. The source of that hope? Noel Edmonds. Obviously.
According to an interview in this weekend's Sunday Times, the veteran broadcaster is preparing to put his money where his mouth is and take over the corporation with the help of some other investors.
But what would Noel's BBC look like? Here's what we think the average Saturday night might look like on Noel's BBC One.
6pm: Deal or No Deal marathon
Noel brings cosmic ordering, people running around high-fiving each other ("It's a blue! It's a blue!") and the magic TV art form of box opening to BBC primetime.
6.58pm: A National Safety Warning on the Dangers of Cake
Noel and his fellow celebs help keep da kids off da streets and drug-free. Just say no kids. Just say no.
7pm: Noel's House Party Version 2.0:
Strictly Come Dancing is dumped...

Michael McIntyre has reportedly landed a new Saturday night entertainment show on BBC One.
Mac Factor will aim to "recapture" the success of hit '90s show Noel's House Party, according to The Sun.
Producers hope to revive Saturday ratings with elements including McIntyre's stand-up, celebrity guests and games and challenges involving the public.
Rehearsals will begin in July to perfect the show ahead of filming later this year.
A source said: "The Beeb have had a nightmare finding something decent to air on Saturday nights when The Voice and Strictly Come Dancing aren't on.
"Everyone still harks back to the glory days of Noel Edmonds and wishes they could recapture some of that spirit."
McIntyre was previously a judge on Britain's Got Talent two years ago but quit after just one series.

Long before Simon Cowell, The X Factor, Ant & Dec and Strictly Come Dancing, Saturday night TV entertainment used to be a very different beast. Back in the '90s when the likes of Big Break, Brucie's Generation Game and anything featuring Matthew Kelly was a hit, TV commissioners presumed that the key word was 'light' when it came to light entertainment. However, one show rallied against type, providing ruthless, rebellious thrills that would have your granny switching over to Noel Edmonds' f**king House Party. Part sports show, part gameshow and part no-holds-barred nonsense, Gladiators was the best programme of the '90s if you were aged between 7 and 12. Central to the fun and games was the Gladiators ringmaster John Anderson. Officially he was just (more)...
