Mind Body Spirit may be the first horror film centred around yoga. No, not yoghurt, The Stuff did that decades ago, but yoga. Yes, there was Yoga Hosers, but that was about two yoga practitioners, not about yoga itself. And it was a comedy, which this very definitely isn’t.

If she’d read a few of my reviews, she would have known what a bad idea that was, though after seeing a video call between her and her mother Lenka (Anna Knigge) I can’t blame her for moving cross-country to become a yoga and fitness influencer, something her childhood friend Kenzi has been very successful at.

In the 1990s and 2000s, May (and specifically Memorial Day) typically marked the beginning of Summer Movie Season. Multiplexes nationwide were packed to the emergency exits with big names, big explosions and (presumably) big box office. The film industry has changed since then, obviously, and summer no longer packs the same high-octane punch that it once did. However. You can still very easily place yourself in the...

“Reservation Dogs” might be ending this season, but the FX series is leaving everything on the field, both in terms of storytelling and technical ambition. Episode 3, “Deer Lady,” is a simple enough vehicle (pun only somewhat intended) for the recurring character played by Kaniehtiio Horn, who we’ve seen cruising the Oklahoma byways on the hunt for bad men. But Sterlin Harjo and his team take the opportunity to do more than provide an origin story for Deer Lady, her fabulously free hair, and the set of antlers she wields. It folds her into a piece of American history and uses a smart blend of sound and score to make us feel as disoriented and terrified as the girl (Georgeanne Growingthunder) who would become Deer Lady.
The show sets her beginning, seen in flashback, at an Native boarding school. It was written into Sterlin Harjo’s script that as soon as the native children,...

Freddie Mercury established himself as a legendary frontman for Queen thanks to his booming vocals and stellar showmanship. He was tremendously talented and entertained audiences like many other music stars couldn’t. In rock history, several of Freddie Mercury’s best moments became enshrined, and Queen guitarist Brian May said one iconic moment was utterly spontaneous.
Freddie Mercury’s call-and-response during Queen’s Live Aid performance was improvised
While Queen delivered many excellent performances for audiences, their Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium in 1985 is one of the most legendary concerts by any band. Live Aid had an excellent lineup that year, including acts such as Elton John, U2, The Who, Sting, David Bowie, and George Michael.
However, Queen stole the show, mainly due to Mercury’s determination to deliver his best performance ever. He had unstoppable energy and was belting every song at total volume. One moment saw him...

What happens if Nature is forced upon us? Would we like it? We have to admit that no matter how much we discover about Nature, it always feels like there’s more than what our senses can perceive. There is this conjuring harmony that we can only try to feel and admire in awe; sometimes, we run towards it, and sometimes we run away from it. “In the Earth” takes this premise to a whole new level and, in that endeavor, attempts to maintain a certain bleakness that comes with the cause. What’s striking is how awareness regarding a pandemic (a potential end-of-times event if we see it through the film’s perspective) makes “In the Earth” less bleak as we realize how close to reality it is and can be. Here’s more on it:

Depeche Mode, the pioneering ‘80s U.K. technopop band, has long had a strong following in Los Angeles — thanks to their exposure on local alternative stalwart Kroq — and now they’re proving a favorite of film and TV creative executives.
The group, consisting of co-founders Martin Gore and vocalist Dave Gahan after the death of keyboardist Andrew Fletcher in May 2022, is on a roll following its 2020 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where they were introduced by Charlize Theron, who called them “the soundtrack of my life.”
Depeche Mode’s new Mute/Columbia Records album, “Memento Mori,” comes out March 24, their first since 2017’s “Spirit” and 15th overall, which will be followed by a year-long tour that launches March 23 in Sacramento and includes a show at L.A.’s Kia Forum on March 28 and four concluding area shows in December, two apiece at Kia and Crypto.com Arena.

Origins is a recurring series giving artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, Delta Spirit’s Matthew Logan Vasquez digs into his new solo single, “Untouchable.”
Matthew Logan Vasquez of Delta Spirit has released his new single, “Untouchable,” ahead of his upcoming solo album, As All Get Out.
As the primary songwriter for Delta Spirit, Vasquez has spent almost two decades perfecting his jagged indie rock sound. “Untouchable,” in particular, is inspired by a true story of vehicular manslaughter taking place in Texas.
“I wrote this song for Walker Lukens [and Zac Catanzaro]’s Kutx podcast Song Confessional,” Vasquez tells Consequence. “I was given a recording of an old woman from West Texas telling a story she remembered from growing up, about a wealthy son from a wealthy family getting away with vehicular manslaughter — not so dissimilar to the Murdaugh boating accident. Depeche Mode have shared the opening track from their upcoming LP Memento Mori, “My Cosmos Is Mine.”
On the heels of the pulsing synth-pop first single, “Ghosts Again,” “My Cosmos Is Mine” is darker, slower, and more foreboding than its predecessor and kicks off the band’s first album without late keyboardist Andy “Fletch” Fletcher on a somber note.

Following the lead of several other awards groups, Film Independent is going gender-neutral for its Independent Spirit Awards.
The organization said Tuesday it will switch from the traditionally separated male and female lead and supporting categories for the film and TV Spirits and instead combine them with 10 nominations each in Best Lead Performance and Best Supporting Performance. The same will be true in the TV categories for Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series as well as a newly added award for Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series. Additionally, a third film category is being added, Best Breakthrough Performance, but that one will be limited to five nominees.
The org also has set Saturday, March 4 for its 2023 ceremony which, like last year, again separates it from its previous longtime berth on the day before the Oscars. Instead, next year there will be eight days separating the shows, with...

The Film Independent Spirit Awards are making a major change in representation: moving to gender-neutral acting awards categories.
The 2023 Spirit Awards will take place March 4, 2023. Submissions are now open, with an increased budget cap for eligible productions. Film Independent will also move to gender-neutral acting categories for the 2023 Spirit Awards for both film and television awards.
“We’re thrilled to join the other festivals and award shows that are already moving to celebrate great acting without reference to gender,” Film Independent president Josh Welsh said. “We’re also happy to welcome non-binary performers into the Spirit Awards without forcing them to choose to identify as male or female.”
Other awards to embrace non-gendered categories include the Grammys, the Gotham Awards, the British Independent Film Awards, and the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Throughout his many career ups-and-downs, five-time Oscar-nominated director David O. Russell has carved out a place for himself with a series of singularly eccentric, screwy films. Let’s take a look back at all eight of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1958, Russell made his filmmaking debut with the incest comedy “Spanking the Monkey” (1994), which won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and brought his Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay victories at the Independent Spirit Awards. The screwball farce “Flirting with Disaster” (1996) quickly followed, which earned him additional writing and directing bids at the Indie Spirits. He achieved a huge critical and commercial success with the Gulf War satire “Three Kings” (1999), for which he competed at the Writers Guild of America in Best Original Screenplay.

Even five years ago, it would have been hard to imagine Jason Segel, the Muppet-loving, butt-baring star of modern comedy classics like “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Knocked Up” as some kind of Sundance darling, but that’s exactly how the actor found his unexpected second act.
When Segel was picked to star as the lauded and immensely troubled late author David Foster Wallace in James Ponsoldt’s “The End of the Tour,” the filmmaker’s decision to cast the lovably goofy “This is 40” and “How I Met Your Mother” star was met with plenty of skepticism. Segel, however, dove deeply into preparing for the role, listening to the recordings of journalist David Lipsky (played by Jesse Eisenberg in the 2015 drama) and watching clips of Foster online to get a sense of the writer’s presence. He even started his own book club to read and discuss Foster’s “Infinite Jest.

For those of you genre fans out there always on the lookout for interesting horror and sci-fi films to enjoy from the comfort of your own home, March’s VOD selections feature several great indie movies that should make for some entertaining viewings this month.
Ava’s Possessions, a film I really dug out of last year’s SXSW Film Festival, is finally making its way onto VOD this Friday and Emelie, the babysitter thriller from Dark Sky Films, is also getting a digital release that day. Other titles arriving on VOD in early March include The Wave, Road Games and Camino.
The month’s VOD titles are being capped off by a film that I’ve been excited to see for some time, Baskin, which is being released by IFC Midnight on March 25th. Other notable VOD titles for March include Dudes & Dragons, You’re Killing Me, A Haunting...

The Nominations: Best Supporting Actress
Patricia Arquette in “Boyhood”
Laura Dern in “Wild”
Keira Knightley in “The Imitation Game”
Emma Stone in “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”
Meryl Streep in “Into the Woods”
Shoulda Been a Contender: Elisabeth Moss for “Listen Up Philip“ or Tilda Swinton for “Snowpiercer”
True, Ms. Streep might be the best aspect of the tepid Into the Woods, but why we have to see her name in these lists nearly every year No Matter What has become one of the many insane in-jokes to tarnish the reputation of the Academy Awards. Any number of other excellent supporting turns from deserving, talented actresses should have taken that slot, including a zany breath of fresh air from Tilda Swinton in Snowpiercer, or Elisabeth Moss in Listen Up Philip.
Should Win: Laura Dern for “Wild”
One of several consistently underrated yet excellent performers has been Laura Dern.

Margaret here, reporting from the warmth of the family home. In between gift-exchanging and major cooking projects, I'm going to be trying to catch up on as many 2014 movies as possible. For those of us without much time to run to the multiplex, there are plenty of options among recent acquisitions on streaming services. While most of the showiest would-be awards contenders are either still in theaters or holding off on their DVD releases, there are plenty of buzzy (and possibly even soon to be Oscar-nominated) movies available for the couch-bound.
Honorable Mention: Slow-burn crime drama Night Moves (Peter Sarsgaard, Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning) and Baltimore dirt-biker documentary 12 O'Clock Boys, both on Amazon Prime; Mind-bending relationship dramedy The One I Love (Elisabeth Moss, Mark Duplass) and low-key Swanberg indie Happy Christmas (Anna Kendrick, Tfe favorite Melanie Lynskey), both on Netflix Instant.

Yes, it's finally come to this. After months of festival debuts, cocktail parties and a fake awards show that somehow was aired on a major broadcast network, an awards event that actually means something (sort of) in the Oscar race is happening. The 2014 Independent Spirit Awards nominations are hours away and, in some ways, they are the most competitive in recent memory. Just as with the Academy Awards, the Spirits' equivalent Best Film and Best Lead Male categories will leave a number of worthy contenders out in the cold. That's somewhat remarkable considering players such as "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Foxcatcher" and "The Theory of Everything" didn't qualify. Still, you'll find a number of familiar Oscar contenders announced including Julianne Moore ("Still Alice"), Reese Witherspoon ("Wild"), Jessica Chastain ("A Most Violent Year") and lots of nods for "Birdman" and "Boyhood." The thing to remember about the Spirits, however, is that...
